Someone previously mentioned that shingles was a risk of the chicken pox vaccine. After seeing my friends son, I think I'd stick with the chicken pox. Here's what the Mayo Clinic book says: It is the same viral type (herpes zoster) that causes both shingles and chicken pox. After you've had the chicken pox, the virus may be dormant in your nerve cells and emerge many years later as shingles. " For unknown reasons the symptoms occur in a sequence as the virus reactivates. The initial sensation is pain or tingling as the virus proliferates along one of the peripheral nerves that spreads outward from your spine. It affects only the area of your face or body served by that nerve. A rash appears 2 or 3 days later, after the virus reaches the nerve endings in your skin. Shingles can occur at any age, but is more common after 50. Recurrence is possible and is more likely if you take a medication so suppress your immune system. Because your immune system protects you from a new invasion by the virus that causes chickenpox, you cannot " catch " shingles from someone else if you've already had chickenpox. However, you can develop chickenpox if you do not have prior immunity and have unprotected exposure to infectious skin lesions of shingles. Guest guest
- I'm not sure how contagious they are but I know that the 2 little girls who had them in Macey's school last year were in so much pain that they had to be admitted to the hospital for IV pain control. I hope all the children are recovering comfortably. Ursula - Macey's mom (5 yr old with CVID) http://home.att.net/~maceyh

Guest guest
So, Autumn's probably at low risk for getting shingles from these other children? I hope so. That's another reason I'm grateful for the Acyclovir. She takes her last dose this weekend & I was hoping it would provide some protection during the outbreaks. Guest guest
Hi Craig, this came through on the Colloidal Silver list a while ago and helped a friend of mine so may be of interest to your friend. Cheers, Website about CS and Shingles. Be warned, there are graphic pictures of shingles on this site that some may find disturbing. http://www.geocities.com/mrmonett/shingles/0shin.htm on 25/10/2002 9:50 AM, Craig C Chamberlin at ccc@... wrote: Hi All, I have an elderly friend who has come down with shingles. Guest guest
Craig, The mother of a good friend of mine has had shingles for over two years. She says that her nerves were damaged by it, she had open sores and ringing and voices in her head form it. I made and gave her a case of 32oz. bottles of Colloidal Silver. She noticed great improvment in the first two weeks. Her sores are gone and no more voices in her head. She is doing much, much better. She doesn't think the damage to her nerves could ever be completely repaired, I don't know, but she feels the Colloidal Silver is definitely he;ping her and she is still taking it. It's been almost three months. At first she was taking three oz. 3x day and it was too much for her so she cut back a bit but swears it is the only thing that has ever helped with her shingles. GypsyRose Hi All, I have an elderly friend who has come down with shingles. Her doctor told her nothing can be done for it. Anyone here have any experiences they might care to share. Guest guest
Hi, Craig, Obie here. Through the years I've seen and heard of many people with shingles and wished I could help in some way; today, I can, [i think]. I believe that shingles is an attack upon us by bacteria literally feeding on our skin; and I've heard what the Docs would have us believe this is and I don't believe one word of it. Since 1994, I utilize a Sanitary Spray for every kind of bacteria and this is no different. I use a large spray bottle, pour Everclear into it, for shingles, to about 5% and fill the bottle with water shake and spray. This will kill the bacteria completely and it won't take two or three weeks. Use a dilute solution and spray more often because they are dominating such a large area of her skin that it will be painful if it's too strong. Any other skin or mouth, throat problem, I use the solution at 10%. It's teriffic, works every time. Also, if she thinks external bacteria is a problem, suggest Borax as a bodywash and in the washine machine. They can't feed on us with Borax. I've used it for years; never had any further problems. The best to her, Obie. Shingles Hi All, I have an elderly friend who has come down with shingles. Her doctor told her nothing can be done for it. Guest guest
I am taking acyclovir for the shingles and cephalexin for a staph infection which decided to come along with it. I'm on viread, norvir, epivir and reyataz for my hiv which for the last year has worked well with little or no side effects. Is the acyclovir oral or IV? Guest guest
Sorry you got shingles. I know how bad they suck...I've had them twice--once on the right side of my head/neck area and one other time on the back left side of my lower trunk. I don't know anything about hepatic neuralgia, but I'm glad you're on the acyclovir so the episode will resolve sooner for ya. Guest guest
Although I am naive-positive and not on HAART meds, I had shingles once about 6 years ago and my Doctor recommended Lycine as a dietary supplement. I take it daily and have not had a reoccurance. I feel for you. Try the Lycine as a future preventative. JK Just been diagnosed with my second case of shingles. First time was on the right side of my head and it developed into post hepatic neuralgia. I have a nerve block to manage the pain for that. This case is on the left side of my head, more on the ear and neck area. I'm hoping it will run it's course and end there. I am taking acyclovir for the shingles and cephalexin for a staph infection which decided to come along with it. I'm on viread, norvir, epivir and reyataz for my hiv which for the last year has worked well with little or no side effects. Has anyone else had any experience with a recurring or second case of shingles? Anyone know my chances of a second occurance of post hepatic neuralgia? What kind of treatments did you receive? The doctor doesn't seem to have any answers about my chances of a re- occurance. He was in denial the my second infection was actually shingles until the tests came back because it is supposedly so rare to be infected on a different area of the body. Guest guest
Mike: I have only had shingles once on my legs, in '90 after the stress of my partner dying. My dermatologist, Marcus Conant, put me on something like 2500 mg of acyclovir a day and baths for a week or so. Just a note, but i have since been taking 400mg a day, but only THREE times a week, and have never had shingles again, and only rarely get cold sores, maybe a couple a year around my mouth, and only very small ones. Putting ice cubes on the point where you feel the tingling for as long as possible cuts the severity also. Dr Conant also once said many years ago that regular acyclovir cuts the death rate from hiv. <<Just been diagnosed with my second case of shingles.
