Guest guest
Mel, They look great.Who told you to keep them in the dark? Not necessary. They don't need light to sprout. Guest guest
I read both opinions. But since I inverted the cover (once they started sprouting) and they are now GROWING, I'm not sure whether I should put a dishtowel over them, or leave them (with humidity dome) in a well lit place?? I think they like the light right now. It's been 4 days (at least I think it's almost 4 days.) I know they take time to grow but with the light now, I think they will drink in the sunlight and grow upwards. To me, it seems that is what they are doing now. I'm growing another batch. They are still in the mason jar and I'm rinsing and draining twice a day. They have developed little tails. I was told by someone to wait until they do this THEN plant them. So we'll see what happens. When I see them growing straight up, I'll make a video to show you all Thanks much for ALL input. You guys are like Italian grandmothers. They all have their own way of making home made tomato sauce. Some use Puree, some would say " I would NEVER use puree, I use tomato paste. " Some would say " Tomato paste, YOU USE TOMATO PASTE?? " See how one can make the same end result but with different ways of achieving it??? Melody
Guest guest
Thanks EW. See my previous post. If I do this correctly, I'll be sunflower sprouts for the rest of my life. But I have two questions. 1. I know I can put these on my sprout salads in addition to whatever else I put in my salads. However, can one use these in a stir fry? 2. When the weather gets WARMER, let's say June July, etc. do I put these in my air conditioned cool pack? Or can they be sprouted the way they are now. Does a warm kitchen affect them? Thanks much P.S. I bet I'll get LOTS of different opinions on these. lol Melody > > Mel, > They look great.Who told you to keep them in the dark? Not necessary. They don't need light to sprout. Guest guest
I appreciate the kind words EW, but the extent of my growing knowledge pales in comparison to yours, and is limited to sprouts, sunnies, and a little dabbling in hydroponics. I'm always open to correction and new ideas. I'll generally post responses to others on what has worked for me. Sunnies seem to be quite a resilient little seed, and will probably flourish under many varied growing conditions. Whatever is working for a particular grower-more power to you!!! As long as we can all have success with and enjoy those amazing sunflower greens! Speaking of which, I'm about to make myself a delicious sunflower green, banana, soaked sunflower seed smoothie!!!! Guest guest
Mel, As I mentioned, there is a tray of sunflower sprouts in my kintchen window at all times. I generally only use them for salads and sandwiches and occasionally snip one or two off for a snack. That tray is a happy place for my grandchildren. They know it's there and they know where the sissors are, to snip one off. When the next batch is ready to eat, I cut off all of the remaining sprouts from the current batch and put them in the fridge. I have never cooked sunflower sprouts, but thats not to say that you shouldn't. I've always said, experiment to see what you like. You, Mel, are great at experimenting. I think you sunnies will benefit from a warm kitchen. After all, you see them growing wild in fields and along highways in the heat of summer with little or no water. ew Re: Just took a video of my sunflower sprouts Thanks EW. See my previous post. Guest guest
Mel, sunnies are DELICIOUS sprinkled over cream of cauliflower soup made in your Vitamix-devine! For the cauli soup, just buzz up some steamed cauli, bit of cheese, splash or water, broth or milk, and some sea salt and/or herbs-simple and delish! Guest guest
I just sprinkle the raw ones on top of the hot soup-the soup wilts them a tiny bit, but they still stay raw. I have thrown them in stir fry before, but I like them raw best. Guest guest
Can't wait to make cauliflower soup in the Vitamix. When my sunnies are ready, I'll add some. Don't think I'll stir fry them. Just add to salads or to soup. I just brought the whole pie plate over to my husband while he was eating breakfast. I said " look at how they are sprouting " . He replied " Do you think that's enough for us? " I said " why " . He said " that's one meal, right " ? I sighed. Then I explained how I will use them (adding to salads, soups, etc. He thought I would snip them off and make one entire salad out of them. He then asked " And what do you do with the dirt? " I said " well it's not technically dirt, but you don't reuse the coir, you throw it away " Then he saw my frozen bananas in the freezer and he said " Oh, we're having ice cream tonight? " That's all the man cares about " Banana Peanut Butter Ice cream " via Vitamix. It really is good. I can't believe I'm eating like this and I really can't believe that my fasting blood sugar was 87 yesterday. That is really doing good. I'm on the exact same amount of Levimir I was before but my numbers are MUCH better. Even my doctor (who loves my sprouts) tells Alan " Alan, eat like your wife eats " lol, Melody > > LOL, this is what I just had for breakfast (cauliflower soup!) - The sunnies > sound like a wonderful addition. Guest guest
Well the soup recipes are all online on youtube. Just put in Soup in the Vitamix and you'll be watching videos for some time. I'm a video watcher. I can't just learn from written stuff. I need to WATCH how it's done, then I can write it down, then I can do it. Much easier for me. That's how I learned how to sprout and do the Vitamix things. The ice cream recipe (also on youtube) is so simple. I take two frozen bananas (in chunks), some granulated sweetner (I use two packets of stevia), two teaspoons of unsweetned cocoa powder, a few drops of vanilla, a tablespoon of peanut butter, three ice cubes, and some liquid (I use quarter cup of almond milk) but any milk can be used, if you prefer. Then turn on machine, switch to variable 10, and turn to HIGH. Using the tamper IMMEDIATELY, start pushing down on all four corners (not in the middle). Push down hard. In about 30 seconds or so (this takes practice, took me a few times to get this right). you will hear this horrendous sound, you will think you broke the machine, YOU DID NOT BREAK THE MACHINE, and after this sound (take off the lid and look in) and you should see 4 mounds. That tells you ICE CREAM IS NOW ICE CREAM. Scoop out and enjoy. And if you really want to have a laugh, may I share with you my husband's first attempt at making ice cream. Of course he didn't know what he was doing but he had such fun. I have MANY other videos that you can link to by watching this one. Sprouting videos, soup making videos. I don't do a lot of vitamix videos. I still so new that I have much to learn but I do like to have fun in my kitchen. Here's my husband. He was channeling Ralph Kramden.Enjoy Melody I just toss everything in the Vitamix > > > > LOL, this is what I just had for breakfast (cauliflower soup!) - The sunnies > > sound like a wonderful addition. Guest guest
Would be good that way and with pita bread too or with a tortilla roll up. I like cheese on them often too. Peanut and banana on pita is good too. I don't think I put sprouts on that but would be good with some honey. My son makes his own tortillas and they are great. However, he makes them of white flour instead of whole wheat I think. I have wanted to make pita bread as they would be much fresher. Probably wouldn't last as long as the store bought but would have less preservatives. It is a bit of a hasssle though they aren't really hard. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: " sproutpeople " <sproutpeople > Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2012 7:36 AM Subject: Re: Just took a video of my sunflower sprouts  My vegetarian teen daughter's favorite snack is egg salad and TONS of sprouts rolled up in a lettuce leaf as a wrap type sandwich. Guest guest
Pita bread, roti, chapati, etc. are very easy to make, and store very well in the freezer. If you individually freeze them for a little while on a cookie sheet, then transfer them to a storage bag with a bit of parchment paper between each one, they can easily be separated while still frozen so you only use what you need. I make mine gluten free, and make a big batch at a time to keep in the freezer. > > > And she is in her 70's too so that is great. Sounded like she liked the idea. Guest guest
About anything is good on pita. I have whole grain pita and had slices of ham and a slice of cheese, 4 salad sprouts with some ranch dressing (diet) and it was very good. I'd have loved to get a tomato in there but there wasn't enough room. When I was separating it it stuck closed at the bottom. Ithink home made don't do that as much. These weren't separating as well.  There used to be a health food store in town and I loved to go there and get sandwiches. They didn't last too long though. Don't know anyplace like that now. Did have a lebanese place open just recently and they say they have healthy meals and a belly dancer on Saturday nights. Was tempted to take my husband for his birthday tonight but he said he'd rather have ribs. It is his birthday. Egg sandwich would taste good with sprouts. > > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > > > > > > > > > To: sproutpeople > > Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 9:48 AM > > Subject: Re: Just took a video of my sunflower sprouts > > > > > > And I'd like to share my two cents. If I don't have to keep something covered and I can put it on the shelf along with my other sprouts, it's MUCH easier for me. I don't have to remember what sprout I'm growing, I can SEE them right in front of me. I like to go EASY and not complicated. > > > > To me, sprouts are so easy and fun to grow and they FEED us, there are no down sides to doing this hobby. It's all a plus. > > > > And this morning (and I was thrilled), my breakfast buddy , who is 72 years old, for the first time in her life, as she was watching me put my sprouts on my egg sandwich, she asked me " Melody how long do your sprouts take to grow?
