Guest guest
Hello Fellow Sproutpeople!! Hi, I have finally begun my sprouting journey and am really enjoying how it is going. I have used the alfalfa mix, the peanuts, the garbanzos, and the San Francisco Mix. The biggest challenge thus far for me has been drying after the final rinse. I purchased the salad spinner/dehuller thinking I might be able to dry all sprout combinations, but the San Francisco mix flies right through the gaps in the basket. Has anyone used a fine mesh centrifugal spinner, or placed a mesh colander inside of the spinner to successfully dry their sprouts for storage? I've looked online and am thinking that a 7 " mesh colander might work beautifully for this purpose. Any thoughts on that? What other drying techniques have you used to prep for storage and to maximize the life of the sprouts? Thanks everyone! : )
Guest guest
Hi. I use a gadget called a Presto Peel a Meal. It's a potato peeling gadget which I have NEVER used for potatoes. It comes with a salad spinning insert and when I saw that gadget in a video I KNEW THAT'S WHAT I NEEDED FOR MY SPROUTS. So I bought one on Ebay. Made my own video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW5ZpBJM3Cs I wouldn't use ANYTHING else. It makes life a lot easier. Guest guest
Thanks Melody, But here's the thing--in the video, the gaps in the bowl are so large that the seeds would slip right through. I am looking for a fine mesh strainer that will spin just like that salad spinner, so I can keep all of those delicious sprouts contained and have them best dried for storage. Other tips on drying would be most welcome. Best, Rob > > > > Hello Fellow Sproutpeople!! > > > > Hi, I have finally begun my sprouting journey and am really enjoying how it is going. Guest guest
Hi Rob, and welcome! -- I tried a spinner a couple of times also, with the same problem of losing sprouts, esp. the little leafies. I think your mesh sieve in the spinner could work but haven't tried it. Interesting. Or you could line the spinner with paper towels to contain the little guys. I use lengths of paper toweling and roll them dry. My steps: Swish sprouts in bowl of water for final rinse/dehulling Grab handfuls of sprouts, gently shake excess H2O over bowl Place sprouts on doubled paper towels spread on countertop Spread sprouts along toweling like burrito filling Roll a long loose burrito and drain on counter for 5-10 minutes Prep a large fridge container (I re-use plastic salad/spinach containers) with a dry paper towel along the bottom Unroll your sprouts into container, place dry paper towel atop, close and refrigerate (I let the paper towels dry on drainboard and re-use for wipeups) I know someone here uses clean dishtowels reserved for his sprouts similarly -- is that you I recall, EW? Guest guest
Hi. Do you know how long it would take me (because of the amount that I sprout), to use the method of rolling them in the paper towels? I'd be there all night long. lol Thank god I have my electric spinning thing. Guest guest
I had some of the Market Mix " soak " yesterday and did the paper towel techniques. Worked pretty well. So well, in fact, that there's nothing left to refrigerate! :0 > > I use lengths of paper toweling and roll them dry. > > My steps: > Swish sprouts in bowl of water for final rinse/dehulling > Grab handfuls of sprouts, gently shake excess H2O over bowl > Place sprouts on doubled paper towels spread on countertop > Spread sprouts along toweling like burrito filling > Roll a long loose burrito and drain on counter for 5-10 minutes > Prep a large fridge container (I re-use plastic salad/spinach containers) with a dry paper towel along the bottom > Unroll your sprouts into container, place dry paper towel atop, close and refrigerate > (I let the paper towels dry on drainboard and re-use for wipeups) > > I know someone here uses clean dishtowels reserved for his sprouts similarly -- is that you I recall, EW? > > Molly >
