I have seen lids to put on them with plastic or mesh.  But small seeds might

not work.  I have ordered some of the lids.  I think my daughter uses mason

jars and the lids for her sprouts.

I have two 'clear' units, but have never used them.

Does anybody here use them, or have any comments about their strengths and

weaknesses?

If I was to use them for quantitiy, I'd plumb the float valve to my washing

machine hose bibb.

Mason jars have been working okay, but the cheesecloth is getting to be a bit of

a hassle.

Thanks all!

Keep up the good info, lengthy or otherwise!

I started sprouting using the mason jars. Because I had never heard of the

alternate methods of sprouting (that is, using the Sproutgarden, and others), I

thought MASON JARS.

I once had 27 mason jars going with all different kinds of sprouts. Each mason

jar had a separate seed to sprout. I had broccoli mason jars, alfalfa mason

jars, fenugreek mason jars, etc. etc. It never occured to me to make my own

blend. The first time I ordered the 3 part salad mix I said " oh wow, this is

much easier " . That cut down on the amount of mason jars I needed to use.

But I will never forget the day I had about 13 mason jars in a big container. I

carried the whole thing near my living room window to get some indirect

sunlight. I placed them on a tray table.

Well, I heard a big crash. I ran into the living room and saw all my sprouts,

all broken glass. I said " what the?? "

I then went on the internet AND THAT'S WHEN I REALLY LEARNED ABOUT THE OTHER

METHODS OF SPROUTING.

I got 2 sets of the Sproutgarden and NEVER looked back. I soak the seeds in the

2 quart mason jar over night. Then I put them in my trays. And now I'm doing

sunflowers in a soil-less medium (Coir)

Good info, Melody, thanks! You're on quite a sprout journey, and I like

reading about it.

My pleasure Doug:

I have met so many kind and compassionate and generous people (fellow sprouters

and Vitamixers), it's like I'm on some journey to heal myself from life's woes.

I'm getting there.

I LOVE my Easygreen-I even grow miniature veggies in it (parsnips, snowball

cauliflower, hungarian fingerfruit, french baby leeks,, etc-pretty awesome to

have dinner growing on your counter top all year round, lol. You can see or

order it here:

It is quite large. I have a little grill rack that I keep my on, in a corner of

my dining area, rather than the kitchen. Very handy gadget, worth the space it

takes up!

I'm in a mobile home and it is sort of combined dining and kitchen area and I

have a desk in there too.  I do have a sunroom but it is not heated or AC'd

other than I do have a wall AC out there in case we have people.  I don't know

if it would be too hot for sprouts or not.  I'd think not.  I may have to get

a shelf put near a window.  Might have to redo the arrangement.  I have a sofa

bed, a sofa and a table and 4 chairs there and a fountain which we need to clean

out.  We don't clean out there the way we should as it is hard for us to do.

But that is where I think I'll put my aerogarden when it arrives.  I am in FL

so our outdoor growing season for veggies is the fall and winter moreso than

summer as it is really wet then and hot.  However, I don't know it is any more

hot than in many other states.  We don't get over 100 degrees much here.  We

get breezes  even though we are 3 miles or so from the sea (as the bird flies

not as the car

must go).  Do any of you use the tomato trees?  I need some help with them.

They seem not to get enough water even when we water once a day.   I have

about 6 more that I can put together and use but need them to look good.   I

am thinking of putting up a wall of flowers on vines at the end of my drive to

hide my entire side yard where I can then grow waht I want without much

hassle.  The back which faces south really gets a lot of sun.  I intend to put

out plants as well as to do sprouts.  But I am not sure how much I can do and

take care of.  Mosquitoes and even fruitflies like my blood and I don't go out

too often in evenings, not after they come out.  My husband usually waters in

the mornings.  My grape tomato is starting to shrivel up a bit now.  It is in

a pot on the ground.  He says he waters it.  With hydroponics do you keep them

inside or can they go outside too?  Maybe I can get shelves to go agaisnt the

house and try to keep

them filled with water.  I may be wasting my time this summer though.  I may

stick  inside until the fall or set up the containers.  I am not sue how to

replant the one tomato plant I have set up now.  I do have some chives growing

in one opening.  Do I throw out the dirt and start over or just fertilize and

water?  Do I stick in the plants from the side, even though I can't get my

hands down too well inside?  How does someone do it who uses these?
