Kathy,

Risperdal returned my son to me the way I remembered him. Sweet and loving. His doctor wanted me to keep giving him Risperdal for many years to come. It helped his behavior so much. But after a year of weight gain, being teased at school, and shortness of breath, I had to take him off. Now Im lost. The doctor says there is no other drug that will give me the same behavioral changes. But, I cant let my son be so fat that he is teased everyday. He went from a slim to husky in 6 weeks. He cried about the teasing everyday.

Do you have any suggestions as to a different drug? My sons behavior is extremely angry and he is also physical to Grandma, his sister (who is autistic) and to me.

Thanks, in Los Angeles.

Hi -We had bad experience with Risperdal as well. I

know that many kids have had good luck with Wellbutrin or Paxil for

anger management problems. My daughter is currently taking

Clonidine (for behavior) and Dexedrine (for attention span) with much

success. Best of luck to you,

Kathy,

  • 7 years later...

Hi my 8yr old son Drew has severe autism and has always had trouble

getting to sleep or staying asleep so the dr put him on melatonin. This

worked well for a while but then he was waking after 4hrs every night

so he was put on risperidone/risperdal 0.75ml.The dr convinced me that

it was fine and as it was working I didnt bother to read up on it.Well

I have read so many horror stories now and my son doesnt talk so he

cant tell me if hes feeling bad on it so I want him off it asap but Im

worried about his behaviour when he does come off it-hes recently

started almost constant screaming and shouting and will do this in the

middle of the night if he wakes,so if he cant sleep it will be a living

hell for us all.Has anyone here had any experience with this drug?is

there any safer/natural alternative such as the melatonin?

Thanks for your time,

Jacquie
