Guest guest
Our Louie, now almost 24, has been taking Risperdal since he was around 16-17. It disappeared his rage, and gave him the ability to self-direct on some pretty longstanding behavioral issues. It also caused a weight gain, but when he moved into assisted living 3 years ago that got fixed (diabetic/autistic roomie + locks on fridge & cabinets + no snacking & lotsa exercise = weight loss for Louie). I can't say enough good things about this drug. It's helped Louie get where he is today, which is semi-independant and working at a job. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, My son is PDD-NOS / Aspergers and they first put him on Adderal and after 2 weeks it made him to nervous so they put him on Concerta in the mornings and Risperdol at night before bed and they seem to work together real well. The Risperdol helps him fall asleep much faster than before he was on it and the concerta stops working early evening. Hope this helps you with your discussion. You have to do what is right for you and your family in the end. Sally Risperdal My son has PDD/Aspergers. They originally diagnosed him with ADHD andhe has been on Adderall since that Diagnosis. He takes Adderall XR in15mg doses. He was still hyper in the afternoon so they started togive him an extra 5mg of regular Adderall in the afternoon so he wouldbe calmer for the after school program. Well, it has been keeping himup all night and because he is so tired all day, he has been throwingsome really bad tantrums. Now Wordsworth wants me to meet with thepsychiatrist to discuss Risperdal. He was on it in the summer (1/2 ofa .5mg tablet) and that made him zone out from 7:30am - 9:00pm. Ididn't like it at all, but it could have been because he was still onthe Adderall. Now I know that Adderall isn't a treatment for PDD, andI know that he was misdiagnosed with the ADHD, but the adderall hasbeen helping him focus, which means he gets less frustrated and throwsless tantrums. I think just stopping the second dose will work, butthey want to discuss the risperdal. Can I have some of your opinionson this drug? Has anyone here had a child on it? What was youropinion of it? Thank you for any help you can give. I just don'tfeel right about putting my 6yr old on anti-psychotics.Sharon

Guest guest
Jacquie, Clonidine worked for Karac for many years; just a small dosage. He is 16 now and doesn't need any sleep meds. Clonidine seemed to have the fewest side effects. I would never give risperdal for sleep. Pat K Hi my 8yr old son Drew has severe autism and has always had trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep so the dr put him on melatonin. This worked well for a while but then he was waking after 4hrs every night so he was put on risperidone/risperdal 0.75ml.The dr convinced me that it was fine and as it was working I didnt bother to read up on it.Well I have read so many horror stories now and my son doesnt talk so he cant tell me if hes feeling bad on it so I want him off it asap but Im worried about his behaviour when he does come off it-hes recently started almost constant screaming and shouting and will do this in the middle of the night if he wakes,so if he cant sleep it will be a living hell for us all.Has anyone here had any experience with this drug?is there any safer/natural alternative such as the melatonin? Thanks for your time,Jacquie A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Guest guest
Hi Jacquie, My son is on Risperdal for aggression and impulse control. .5 ML at night and for him it is working fine. I don't think giving such a strong drug for sleep alone is common. The things that have worked for my son are. Epsom salt baths, is 8 and I dissolve about 1 1/2 cups in hot water and then add it to his bath (this way it isn't gritty) it is a natural laxative so I would be careful if he drinks it, a little is probably okay but used to drink out of the tub (yuck!). The Epsom salts also have a slow detox effect so it is pretty good all around. I also use Melatonin 5mg in the time release form. He doesn't swallow pills but it still works if he bites it (pretty gross but he always does). The regular Melatonin did help him fall asleep but not stay asleep this does both for him. The time release form has a TR in the name and it says time release in small print on the front. We have found this at Walgreens and other drug stores. Hope you all get some more sleep soon! Guest guest
Hi Jacquie and Kellie, My son is on 0.15 in the am and 0.15 in the evening. It's very little but it does the job. It makes him a happy kid too otherwise, when he's off of it he's always having a bad day impulsive, and tantrums! it helps him cope well. I actually tried melatonin but if you don't get a controlled release kind you do wake up 4 hours later.....it acutally messed up my sleep. I will try the epsom salts though. Guest guest
My son is 5 and he uses risperdal and melatonin an both do fine with him. Some times I feel sometimes that he doesn't work as well if he doesn't take it all. Some times I have to lay down beside him too so he will fall asleep. Just to let you know the fillers are different with the gerneric resperdal it mad a big difference with my son. I understand that your worried about it but I promise every thing is going to have its pros and cons when it comes to meds. But with out risperdal my son would not be were he is today. I mean he still has his up and downs but is doing better in school. So I belive in both if you want to know cause we have been using both for the last 6 months an doing well. Guest guest
Hi Kellie, not sure about Epsom salts as Drew does drink alot of bath water!!I havent heard of the time release melatonin so Ill look into that.Drew wont take tablets either so I usually have to crush them or open up capsules and mix the powder in his drink. Thanks for your reply, Jacquie >

Guest guest
Thanks for your reply Lindy,Ive had to lie down with Drew to get him to settle but now he pushes me away and shouts at me,hes growing up lol.I know I cant just stop the risperdal anyway so for the time being I will be giving him half dose(what the dr instructed) and see about this time release melatonin etc and see how he gets on.
