That's what I usually get too, is confusion with the therapists, especially when someone is new. I feel pretty good about the IEP process for my two boys down here in South Florida. Their teachers are very in tuned with their needs and accomplishments and challenge my boys without causing them stress, and they both progress at their own pace consistently.

But sometimes a therapist (new or otherwise) who admittedly doesn't have the same interactions as the teachers will come up with a "goal" that sounds like lunacy. During a recent IEP, one of my son's therapists suggested that a goal would be stacking 10 blocks. Stacking 10 blocks?? He was doing that 2 years ago. He can stack blocks all day long! I let it go, because three other goals were challenging and my priorities lie with communication for my son, but sometimes, you just have to wonder….

Re: Funny

>> Just wanted to share this wonderful letter with everyone, needing a laugh about IEP's..<<*laughs*Thanks, I really enjoyed it.We just went through our first IEP season. The only snag we hit was with a new ST who had only been working with Keyan a couple of months - she listed his articulation as 'excellent', I boggled. I have difficulty understanding about 40% of what he says and I'm with him 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. (My husband takes over for me on Sundays, giving me a much needed rest.) Most strangers can't understand 90% of what he says, heck - my own father can't understand him most of the time.Eventually, after a bit of discussion, we reached the conclusion that his articulation was only considered 'excellent' because she had tested him using picture cards - well known, and easily recognized picture cards which allowed him to say only a single, monosyllabic, word. Gee... of course she understood what he was saying - she was holding the card, you can't really get better, or simpler, contextual speech than that. lolI offered to tape record several sentences and present them to her, without contextual explanation - if she could clearly understand what he was saying I would let the IEP stand as it was written. Oddly enough, she ammended her statements to reflect my observations without the tape recorded 'test'. ;-)

Thanks for sharing your response to Eli; it gave me a big smile. That is so funny. I'm continuiing to pray for you and Eli. I have his name as Elijah, but do you call him Eli? I like that. Love and prayers. Pat K

Re: having really hard time

I havent kept up with posts but wondering how things are going e?

Something to chuckle about. Eli used to be a hand flapper. He hasn't for over a year now. Well today he came into the Living room flapping away.

My response was " Hunny no no you dont do that anymore, remember? " lol..lol..Great response Mom..lol..

Is doing just Floortime for now? I think thats what you said. I feel behind. I have skimmed through some posts and see many happy posts..really praying things are smoothing out for you : )

> Hi all. If you pray, please pray for us ;) -- is having an awful time right now. I'm just now entering the 2 1/2 yr old phase as well as with Autism, he is deficient in so many areas which as you know causes the twos and threes to be even worse...he's a mess. I have lots of hope, but I need more energy, as we are working on blocking him every-time he stims which has increased as of late, as well as has his self injury. Our ABA therapist has tweaked the program to add more play to it.......she's so good (funny how I love them one week and am tired of them the next LOL) ----- I'm VERY tired. He would rather be and do anything that make eye contact, and or not stim....I'm seeing it more....

I like either name. I have been reading the Daily Bible this year and this morning I actually read about the prophet Eli. Did Eli have a good day yesterday? My Karac seemed just a little nervous; I think it is because they are keeping him at school a little longer and starting some kind of job activity. Are you doing ABA with Eli? Pat K
