Guest guest
Hi All I was given a container each of Organic Millet and Organic Couscous. Never opened. I just looked at the expiration date. One expired in 2009 and the other expired in Aug of 2010. One is a plastic sealed container and the other (the millet) is by Arrowhead Mills and is in a regular plastic bag which has never been opened. Since these items are WAY past the expiration date, would any of you take a chance and use them? Thanks much. Melody
Guest guest
As long as they're not buggy and don't have a rancid smell, I would at least try one serving. Guest guest
If you think I'm going to open up a container that MIGHT have something crawling inside, then you don't know me. They are old, they are expired, they will have to go. LOL And as I have decided not to cook into September, well this might be interesting. One thing I do have to make are my greens. Gotta have my bok choi, my kale, my other greens, sauteed in garlic. I mean, I HAVE TO HAVE MY GREENS. Love them. Melody
Guest guest
More than likely you would see evidence before opening the bags. Bugs themselves, droppings or bug dust/dander, or spider web looking things. > If you think I'm going to open up a container that MIGHT have something > crawling inside, then you don't know me. > > They are old, they are expired, they will have to go. > > LOL > And as I have decided not to cook into September, well this might be > interesting. > > One thing I do have to make are my greens. Guest guest
I personally would NOT use them-not only is there a chance of rancidity, but also vermin-grains often house them. Not worth it-old grain is nasty, and can harbor mold. Bin them and buy some fresh. I store all of my grains in the freezer-makes them last forever, but I wouldn't use expired grain that wasn't frozen. Keep in mind that grain is often stored for ages before it is even packaged, so it is way past its prime. > > Hi All > > I was given a container each of Organic Millet and Organic Couscous. Guest guest
Me too, Melody! But I have to have mine juiced. Since I've been juicing them instead of doing green smoothies, I find I almost crave the juice. I have an 8 oz glass of green juice nearly every day and I really love it. Usually whatever I have on hand (of course), but always try to have kale, collards/dandelion/lamb's quarters/chard or spinach, baby bok choy or romaine, cucumber, celery, gingerroot, lemon or lime, and sprouts. Then I add a teaspoonful of Sea Clear, which is fermented kelp and chlorella in a miso base, and top it off with dulse. It is so yummy!! The Sea Clear really gives it a lovely flavor. You can get it at www.rawfoodworld.com and probably many other places as well. Peggy Oh...BTW...I planted lemon cucumber heirloom seeds in my 3-pod Aerogarden about 3 days ago, and it is already almost 1/2 " high! I couldn't believe it. I just planted one pod with the cucumber - the other two are organic stevia. Those haven't come up yet, but their seeds are SO tiny! I hope they grow. I'll be transplanting the cucumber as soon as I get my grow boxes prepared.
Guest guest
Melody Have you tried raw kale salad? It is my favorite dish. Just wash the greens, trim off stems, chop into pieces, toss with a little salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic. So good for you. You can top it with sprouts n Dr. Rollings NJ Licensed Psychologist #4686 www.DrnRollings.com Sent from my iPad > If you think I'm going to open up a container that MIGHT have something crawling inside, then you don't know me. > > They are old, they are expired, they will have to go. > > LOL > And as I have decided not to cook into September, well this might be interesting. > > One thing I do have to make are my greens. Guest guest
Hi ,  Due to budget restraints, I went with the manual Healthy Juicer. You can see it on Amazon or on the Sprout People site. It's not the fanciest, but it suits me fine. And the price was right, especially compared to what you can pay for other types of juicers. This was only $49.00! If you look at the reveiws on Amazon, don't pay any attention to the " nays " - it works fine and is easy to put together, take apart, and clean, and it is sturdy. Using a little common sense helps! (e.g., if it becomes very difficult to turn the handle, just turn it the other direction for a few turns and it will clear any jams. Don't just try to power through!)  For my 8 oz of juice, I use (approx.) 5-6 leaves of kale/chard/collards, etc., 1/2 cucumber, 2-3 stalks celery, a handful of sprouts, handful of baby spinach or 2-3 heads baby bok choy, small slice gingerroot, and 1/2 lemon or lime. I feel that is good return on the veggies. If I had more available funds, I might go with the electric version of this one, but really, this one is fine and you don't get any heat, so no enzymes are destroyed. Lately I've begun to put a nut-milk bag over the waste spout and then squeeze the bag for a little more juice, but that's only a tablespoonful or a bit more.  For the money, I don't think you can beat this. Plus, it's a great introduction to juicing and you can always trade up if you feel the need.  HTH! Peggy  I haven't used it for fruit, but I'm sure it would work splendidly for that. I can do carrots or the harder veggies, but they must be cut into small slices or sticks. I really only want it for my greens. Guest guest
Thanks for doing that, Melody. I replied the same to her, but with slightly different directions before I saw your post. Same thing happened with the 100-year old egg - I replied before seeing EW's post about them. People must wonder if I'm deliberately parroting their posts! I can assure you all, that's not the case. But it generally shows that great minds think alike, eh? Â Peggy To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, June 12, 2011 3:31 PM Subject: Re: I have organic millet and couscous but they are expired. Guest guest
Oh good, !! It's always good to save money. And I had forgotton to mention that the Healthy Juicer is touted for wheatgrass - I do that, too, when I have it on hand. I'm going to try growing my own one of these days, but right now I'm focusing on getting my heirloom seeds in the grow boxes. I'm so excited about my heirloom organic lemon cucumber coming up in the Aerogarden in 3 days!! Today is day 4 and it's already an inch tall. I am so stoked.  Good luck with your older juicer and doing the greens. At least now you know where to go if your old one doesn't do the trick. But I feel pretty sure it will, and you'll be so happy!  Take care, Peggy  To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, June 12, 2011 6:21 PM Subject: Re: I have organic millet and couscous but they are expired.  Thanks Peggy, That helps a lot, and I feel foolish that I had forgotten my old manual Health Fountain juicer purchased for juicing wheat grass over 30 years ago. Guest guest
Any postings that you post to the group, come into my email inbox. Then, if I wish to reply, I go to the bottom of that email and select " reply via web post " This took me a LONG time to learn how to do but at least I learned something. None of my posts would come out if I just hit the reply button. Then... some kindly person explained to me " just go to the bottom and choose " reply via web post " VOILA!!! I'm a genius. ROFL.
