Guest guest
Yes, you did do a very good job with your new sproutgarden kitchen! Very compact, efficient, perfect for your small space. Kudos!!  The larger tomatoes are ready to eat when they get a little soft (IMO). Don't refrigerate them before they are ripe. If you want to speed it up a little, I think you can put them in a brown paper bag (like a lunch bag) with an apple. That's how we force-ripen avocadoes. Try one that way and be sure to check it every day.  ew or others may have different opinions/ideas.  Peggy  ps...I don't know what's up with this group. ;<( To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2011 2:07 PM Subject: Here's my new SproutGarden Kitchen  And a friend gave me some tomatoes. Guest guest
Well, I don't have any paper bags in this house. Isn't that funny? But I'll check them every day to see when they are ready. Keeping them outside in a nice cart. The salad I made was delightful. I have one 2 times a day and enjoy them so. It's really cool not having to buy any lettuce. Take care and thanks much Melody > > Yes, you did do a very good job with your new sproutgarden kitchen! Guest guest
I've decided to jump in here and give my opinion. My father had a Vitamix and had lots of problems. After watching videos on You Tube and going to demonstrations for blenders, I chose a Blendtec. The is no tool to push things down with a Blendtec. The blender sucks everything down. The Blendtec is fully automatic. There are no dials to turn or switches to flip. Both machines have demos all over. Go to their websites and you will see where a demo near you is. Both Costco and Sam's Club has them regularly. Whole Foods sells the Vitamix and has demos in their stores. I got my Blendtec at Sam's Club, they sell it for $60 less than list price. ew Re: Here's my new SproutGarden Kitchen Liked your video. Guest guest
I have both the Vitamix and the Blendtec, and I agree with EW-the Blendtec is a great machine as well. I prefer the Vitamix for soups-it gets them much hotter than the Blendtec, but for everything else they preform pretty much the same, and it is easier to get things out of the Blendtec container. There are some video links for Vitamix here: http://mymealmasters.com/ and here http://www.vitamix.com/household/health/gluten_free.asp?COUPON=06-004209 and videos for the Blendtec here: http://www.blendtec.com/?affiliateid=453981 Both offer a three payment plan for anyone considering buying. You can also often find them on Craigslist used for a decent price. > > I've decided to jump in here and give my opinion. My father had a Vitamix and had lots of problems. Guest guest
Melody, I love your set up! You did a wonderful job. Regarding the tomatoes do not refrigerate!!!! It will alter the taste. Store tomatoes upside down. In other words but the stem side down on the counter. Also, you can eat tomatoes even if they are green. We love a dish that I make with tomates in variiang degrees of ripesness, mixed peppers, garlic, and a little olive oil simmered/sauteed on the stove. Delicious! If you are wanting your tomatoes to be completly ripe depending on the variety, you may want these to be more red. They will be slightly firm, if they start getting soft they are probably going bad. Enjoy!!!! > And a friend gave me some tomatoes. I'd like someone to tell me when they > are ripe enough to eat. > > Made a video (of rourse) > > lol > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HzcvNyXL6E > > Melody > And how come this forum is not going anywhere?? > > > > ------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
I have never tasted green tomatoes. I know there is a film called FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. lol I must try this sometimes. I HAVE purchased a container of gourmet tomatoes and they were ALL colors, green, yellow, orange and there was even an almost black colored one. They were all slightly different in taste. Some were very sweet, some not so sweet. But I love colors in my sprout salad. Makes me envision I'm putting all that good stuff into my body. And my body is singing!!! Hence my name..... Guest guest
" Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe " was a book by Fannie Flagg first. It is really a great story. Check it out at you local library. She has written several others. All great. ew PS: You probably wouldn't want to eat fried green tomatoes because the are breaded and deep fried. Too much grease for my body. Re: Here's my new SproutGarden Kitchen I have never tasted green tomatoes. I know there is a film called FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. lol I must try this sometimes. Guest guest
Mel, They are hard because they are fresh. You are so used to store bought, that you haven't had a lot of experience with picked fresh. Leave them out. Put them in the coolest place in your kitchen. Don't put them in a paper bag. Don't close them up in anything. They will be ok. They may get a little soft, but that will just make them juicier. Try this: Garlic, onion, celery, mushroom, celery and some sort of squash. What every amout you like. Saute it all together in a sauce pan. When the vegetables get soft, toss in a diced tomato, some Italian seasoning and a pinch of caraway seed. Put it on low for about ten minutes to heat the tomato, and serve. Then tell me how Alan likes it. PS: I toss okra in that mix, but not everyone likes it. I have a large okra patch in my garden. I love okra. I make okra pickles. Simply wonderful!! ew Here's my new SproutGarden Kitchen > > > > And a friend gave me some tomatoes. Guest guest
EW: I'm hysterical. That you think I NEVER had that recipe. Well, not with Okra anyway. But the rest? Many times. Alan will eat anything I put in front of him as long as it's sweet. I am following your directions in storing the tomatoes. This afternoon, when I made my sprout salad, I took one of the smaller (regular sized) tomatoes. Added it to my salad and added garlic, and a dash of salt and pepper and extra virgin olive oil. I do not know why most people do not eat this way. That they prefer BOTTLED salad dressing to this. OMG!!! Absolutely delicious. And I have to show you what I did with my sprout garden. I IMPROVED IT. I'm going to post a link in 5 minutes. You'll get such a kick Melody > > > > The tomatoes are ripe. Guest guest
EW: I have NEVER used bottled salad dressing in my life. You forget I'M ITALIAN. Came from an Italian household. We used salt and pepper, and oil and vinegar. Only I hate vinegar. I only do a splash of extra virgin olive oil. And I add garlic. Bottle Salad Dressing? I mean, THE NERVE!!!! ROFL. Melody P.S. Guest guest
ew. This is the way of things in families. All reminiscent of the biblical " A prophet is without honor in his own town " . It's frustrating, but take comfort in the fact that you are indeed influencing your grandchildren in a very good way. Likely they won't be able to pass it on to their own children, either, but at least you're taking care of one generation! Keep up the good work!  Peggy (and remember all those on this group who've been helped so much by you!)
