Lee, I'm glad you posted this. I've been thinking over this issue through the

last few " media sprout scares " .

It's too bad that sprouts are made villains, when the problem is seed suppliers

and commercial sprouting companies that won't be responsible and won't be held

accountable. I recall reading once about one state's (?CA?) guidelines that

required culturing the rinse water and then the effluent of sprouting seeds. Yet

at that same time, I found that a produce company that had currently produced

contaminated sprouts, had also done same three years earlier. I can't but doubt

that the companies see sprouts as a cheap and easy means to increase their

margin, with little concern to safety.

The stories I have read this time around (the German epidemic) have quoted so

many " experts " saying that they haven't eaten sprouts in years, that they advise

their families not to, even that there should be a warning on sprouts akin to

the one on pasteurized milk.

My main concern with the media fervor/fear is an uninformed backlash that could

affect access to sprouting seeds. I have faith in Sproutpeople that they will

weather any storms but I watch carefully to see if any crazy political measures

are proposed.

Appreciate you " speaking up " online with a voice of reason. I'm doing that also

on a personal basis with friends, colleagues who know I love my sprouts and ask

for my perspective; plus " walking the talk " by eating my sprouts at work/with

friends.

I had to make a comment myself, this link is directly to my comment scroll up

to the top of the page to find the actual story about Egyptian fenugreek seed

being banned.
