Guest guest
Sorry, if this has been asked and answered before, but is there then a good quality organic fertilizer that is readily available maybe at Lowe's, or similar) that won't break the bank in cost? Thea ---- wrote: > Just so you are aware, Miracle Grow organic choice is NOT organic. The poultry liter and manure come from battery chicken farms and that is as far from organic as you can get, since hens are fed antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids, medications, etc. Soil is not regulated for organic labeling, so they can get away with calling it whatever they wish-they are allowed to call it organic simply because it contains some forest matter that may have come " from the wild " . I have some more detailed info somewhere-as I researched this topic heavily when I was trying to work out my own soil needs when I started gardening years ago. Just a heads up-I really despise when we are so easily duped by companies-pay more for a product that is EXACTLY the same as its off labeled counterpart (am hunting for my soapbox-can't remember where I stored the darn thing, but this issue is worth dragging it out for) > > > >
Guest guest
I shop at Lowes and they don't sell compost and there is no planter mix there I wold buy except one that is formulated for the Square Foot Garden program, but I think its a little on the pricey sade because I can make my own. But if you can't make your own - go for it. ew Re: Re: Organic Fertilizers - or EW Sorry, if this has been asked and answered before, but is there then a good quality organic fertilizer that is readily available maybe at Lowe's, or similar) that won't break the bank in cost? Guest guest
If you get a chance, see if your local library has a copy of 'Square Foot Gardening' by Mel Barthlomew. Its very interesting learning how he grows so much in a small space. Mel's mix, as he calls it is: One third compost, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 peat- I use coir, because peat is acidic and not a renewable resource. Coir come from the harvest of coconuts, and that's not likely to run out. Coir is neutral and won't affect your pH. Each time you harvest a square, you need only to ad compost to get it read for the next planting. Of course, I do make my own compost. ew Re: Re: Organic Fertilizers - or EW Pray tell, sage Ernest, how does one make one's own? Pretty please with blackberries on top? Thank you. Guest guest
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. And the next question would obviously be what's needed to make one's own planter mix? However, this is entirely predicated upon my being able to spare the time to make it, so the jury's out on that, LOL! Guest guest
What I use for fertilizer is vermicompost. (worm poop) I made my bin out of a rubbermaid tote. I am fixing to make two 5 gallon bucket style worm bins. That way I can move them around when I need to. The tote when loaded down with vermicompost as it is now is actually very heavy for my husband to move. http://www.nyworms.com/vermicomposting.htm TN > Sorry, if this has been asked and answered before, but is there then a good > quality organic fertilizer that is readily available maybe at Lowe's, or > similar) that won't break the bank in cost? > > Thea >
