Guest guest
Here is the original email I sent in May of 99' regarding the EBV testing for PID patients. This information is from Dr. Harville who is formerly of Duke and was Macey's immunologist at the time here in Georgia. **************************************************************************** ********************************************** - regarding your earlier post about tests for EBV I spoke with Dr. Harville today about virus scans for non producing IgM/IgG patients. He said that in order to do that you have to use a PCR assay test. He said serum tests are no good in these patients. There are two tests you can do for EBV. One is a PCR " DNA detector " , this just basically gives you a yes/no answer about the virus being present. Test two is called a " DNA ultraquant " it checks for the number of copies of the virus. They both can be done at Specialty Labs out of California. 1-. DNA Detector is test # 7583 DNA ultraquant is test # 7584 Plus he said that any type of hepatitis screen would need to be done by PCR method. He wants a PCR assay for hep C (test # 7516) done on Macey. Hope this helps your earlier question. Macey really threw her local doctors for a loop last weekend. Her Hepatitis screen was positive for surface and core antibodies but negative for surface antigens. They were concerned that she had previously had Hep B. But when I had the lab results faxed to Dr. Harville he explained to me why these results would be skewed with IVIG use. So he said only the PCR method would be reliable. So all weekend (since he works half days on Friday and we couldn't reach him) we thought Macey was a Hep B carrier. It wasn't the most carefree time of our life. But like Dr. H said, the docs here are learning just like I am, by reading, reading, reading. **************************************************************************** ********************************************* http://www.specialtylabs.com/test.asp?dos_code=7583 http://www.specialtylabs.com/test.asp?dos_code=7584 addendum to earlier email. here are the links from Specialty's page about the tests.
