Hi Everyone,

Thanks again for your supportive posts! We are just heading home, but we had dinner with and her family last night at the hospital and she asked me to post an Olivia update.

It has been rocky the first couple of days. They got very little sleep, when we first met them they had been up all night and the morphine was making Liv nauseous. She was also in pain, and it's hard to take more meds when you can't eat much. The next day she felt a little better, but had another bump in the road that day, too- sick- and that's just horrible with new back surgery.

The VEPTR rods were removed and the halo applied, but the metal hooks were too embedded in her pelvic bones to safely remove. Our doc told us doctors are not very "enchanted" with all of the complications from these types of new surgeries. Growing rods also have a more then 100 percent complication rate, metal breaks off and the spine fuses where it shouldn't, etc.. wants people to know what can happen when early treatment is not available to a progessive child. Docs really do not know what will happen down the line if the hooks must stay in, it's too new a procedure. The new growing rods with magnets have proved to have many complications, too. SO, while just as did, any good parent would do surgery if it's the best option, this is again why our cause is so important. Please shout it from the rooftops and keep praying and sending good vibes to Heath and brace, precious Liv!Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast

from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21)
