Cryoglobulenemia which is associated with

HCV can cause purpura………red/purple blotches. I think usually

on the lower extremities…..feet and ankles.

.. I was just talking with my mom (she has HepC

as well). The

way she got diagnosed was by her thyroid doctor. He noticed red dots

on her chest/neck and told her it was a symptom of hepatitis. These

red dots weren't bothersome to her at all. But it turned out it was

HepC. Maybe its possible to have them in other areas?

Again, it always best to be on the safe side and get it checked out.

, IM glad you're home now and hope they can find some better pain control for you too.. Please keep us updated on your condition and how things are going.. You should be reaching the half way mark on tx soon I think??? Remember the liver can regenerate itself so if you can stop the virus, you may not progress to needing that transplant.. lets hope for that hon!

hugs,Jackie

Subject: UpdateTo: " Matchinsky" Date: Sunday, September 21, 2008, 8:36 AM

I was released from the hospital yesterday after having been admitted on Tuesday. I suddenly became very short of breath, dizzy and disoriented. Couldn¢t think straight. I ended up calling 911. I guess I¢m sicker than I thought, they kept me all that time, even though the hospital was overflowing.

The doctor thinks there were several factors involved in my crashing so suddenly. I had the flu a couple of weeks ago. They¢ve changed several meds recently, including taking me off my anti-anxiety med to see if an off-label drug would help my energy level. I¢m shopping for a new shrink. And the doc is diagnosing hepatic encephalopathy.

I was very dehydrated, so they kept me on fluids the whole time. I was on a heart monitor. My blood counts dropped lower than ever, so they gave me two units of whole blood. The doc doesn¢t want me to take a full dose of Tylenol anymore. He also switched my laxative to one that is liver-friendly.

They also set me up with the Palliative Care Initiative, a new program at the hospital. While it¢s sometimes confused with Hospice, it¢s for people with chronic illness and especially for pain control. The good news is that I¢m very healthy, except for the liver, and will make an excellent candidate for a transplant, when that time comes. The bad news is there is nothing they can do for my pain as it¢s caused by the meds.

The Palliative Care doc also thinks my energy levels might be increased by testosterone supplements. I told him we had tried that before and it didn¢t seem to work. He asked if there were any follow-up labs done and I told him that there were none, so we¢re waiting for labs for this issue.

More will be revealed.

What is Palliative Care

DefinitionPalliative care (pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv) specializes in the relief of the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for patients and their families. Palliative care is appropriate at any point in an illness. And it can be provided at the same time as treatment that is meant to cure you.watch video Ensures quality of life

Palliative care is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Patients have a range of diseases and respond differently to treatment options. A key benefit of palliative care is that it customizes treatment to meet the needs of each individual person. Palliative care aims to relieve symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping. It helps patients gain the strength to carry on with daily life. It improves their ability to tolerate medical treatments. And it helps them better understand their choices for care. Overall, palliative care offers patients the best possible quality of life during their illness.

Palliative care benefits both patients and their families. Patient comfort is a main goal. So is support for the family. The team helps patients and family make medical decisions and choose treatments. It also makes sure they get reliable information.

Different from hospice

Palliative care is not the same as hospice care. Palliative care may be provided at any time during a person`s illness, even from the time of diagnosis. And, it may be given at the same time as curative treatment. watch video

Hospice care always provides palliative care. However, it is focused on terminally ill patients-people who no longer seek treatments to cure them and who are expected to live for about six months or less.

Provided by a team

Usually a team of experts, including palliative care doctors, nurses and social workers, provides this type of care. Chaplains, massage therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists and others might also be part of the team.

You can get palliative care when you are at home, in an assisted living facility, nursing facility or hospital. Working in partnership with your primary doctor, the palliative care team provides:

Expert treatment of pain and other symptoms Close, clear communication Help navigating the healthcare system Guidance with difficult and complex treatment choices Detailed practical information and assistance Emotional and spiritual support for you and your family

Palliative

care is for people with chronic illness. It’s main focus is pain

control, but there are other things they can do, like case management.

Ask your doctor.

I’m doing better since I was released

from the hospital, though the episode seems to have taken a lot out of

me. My labs are still up (though starting to head down) but I’m terribly

tired and weak. My memory is worse and I’m still unsteady on my

feet. They added testosterone to try to improve my energy level.

Don't know if they have a Harbor Freight in your area, but you can pick one up for about 350.00 at that store. Also check out some of the pawn shops, sometime a family member will pass away with one and they will take and sell them to pawn shops. It is a thought.

I have seen them for sale there.

I¢m doing better since I was released from the hospital, though the episode seems to have taken a lot out of me. My labs are still up (though starting to head down) but I¢m terribly tired and weak. My memory is worse and I¢m still unsteady on my feet. They added testosterone to try to improve my energy level.

No, I don’t

have a scooter, though I do use them in the grocery store. I want to do as

much as I can, and my doctor encourages that. I can take the dog for walk

around the block; two blocks yesterday was pushing too far. I can load

and unload the dishwasher. I help with the laundry, though I’ve not

been able to do as much of that as I could before the hospitalization. I

can microwave dinner.

do you have a scooter? I am thinking about

getting one since I rent them so much at $40.00 a pop. Its the only way I can

keep up with who ever I am with.

Thanks & Janet,

I have really good insurance so I am hoping they will cover some or most of it. I will be going to Disney 10/16 and there is no way I can keep up with the family and especially my 2 Grandsons without one. They rent them at $45.00 per day "sigh" as if its not expensive enough to go there they should provide them for free. I was shocked that the Mohegan Sun, MGM & Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut charged ME $40.00 per day to take my money LOL Oh well we had a ball and spent the entire 3 days I was there going to concerts, shows, shopping and of course scooting around like a mad women gambling :)

Its like my body is junk but the brain says go go go :) I notice now even my 1/2 walk with the dog 3 times a day needs to be cut down because my heart starts racing like a top fuel dragster. That will just not do as Corey is healthy and needs way more than a 15 min walk 3 times a day. Still no problems with house work, laundry, cooking from scratch and clean up, as well as house work and caring for the critters which is a major project for a healthy person. Anyone that owns parrots and dogs that feeds them a fresh food species specific diet would understand. I just cannot bring myself to dump some pellets in a bowl for them. They are all older (Tiki is 20 yrs old) and have never seen a pellet let alone eaten one. We also have a acre of groomed yard that hubby and I cared for because we enjoyed it. Now all I can do is go out and pull weeds but only after the sun sets on hot days :( He cannot do it alone so we will have to hire someone to help him.

The only really important thing in my life right now is diet and eating right and that will never change.

So any way wa wa wa, poor me, but thanks for listening :) I know it could be much worse and I should be thankful for what I have...but I'm not LOL I always did want more and worked my butt off all my life to get it. My how things change with HepC. I am still a fighter and Shot #5 is this Sunday.

when you got to disney, rent a scooter, they have them but you have to get there early in the am or they all run out, but they are wonderful,, I have used them the last two times we've gone to disneyland and plan to use it again in Nov when we go again.. There is no way I can walk all over disneyland and the scooter helps you also to be able to use the alternative entrance into rides so you dont have to wait in line for a long time.. the grandkids loved that..lol..

they run about 30-40 dollars per day but are sooooo worth it... Jackie
