Partington, Ph.D., BCBA Saturday, September 22, 2007 (Please register early as seating is limited) Designing and Implementing Effective Language Intervention Procedures for Young Autistic Children: Tapping the Motivational Variables LOCATION: Broward Community College, Central Campus, 3501 SW Davie Rd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33314 Building 15, ROOM 101 In this workshop a major emphasis will be placed on identifying methods to enhance and utilize motivational variables (establishing operations) to teach language in both structured teaching sessions and in daily activities. Techniques for coordinating the ongoing decision making necessary for effective language intervention and methods of data collection and tracking will be presented. The advantages and disadvantages of non-vocal communication systems will also be discussed. Videotapes of young autistic children in a variety of educational settings (including early intervention in integrated environments) will be used to demonstrate specific methodology for developing and maintaining the students' motivation for participating in language development activities, and to demonstrate effective methods of teaching specific language skills. This workshop would be appropriate for parents and practitioners who work with young autistic children in either clinical or educational settings. Specific Learner objectives: 1. Participants will be able to assess the motivational variables of young children with autism. 2. Participants will be able to identify methods for developing and maintaining the motivation of young children with autism. 3. Participants will be able to conduct an initial behavioral language assessment such as to determine the most appropriate initial language intervention for young children with autism. 4. Participants will be able to identify the criteria for selection of the initial words to teach young children with autism who do not have expressive language skills. 5. Participants will be able to identify the critical elements of discrete trial instruction. 6. Participants will be able to explain how to perform a correction procedure in situations in which the student provides an incorrect response. 7. Participants will be able to identify how the critical elements of discrete trial instruction can be implemented within the child's naturally occurring daily events. He is the co-founder of STARS School and Behavior Analysts, Inc., in Pleasant Hill, California. His expertise is in teaching methodology used in language intervention and shaping initiation skills with children who are experiencing language delays as a result of autism- related disorders. Dr. Partington has received awards from the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis and the Florida Association of Behavior Analysis for his contributions to the field of behavior analysis. Dr. Partington has published several papers on teaching strategies for children with disabilities. Additionally, he has co-authored with Dr. Mark L. Sundberg the book, Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities. He is the author of The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills- Revised (The ABLLS-R): An assessment, Curriculum Guide, and Skills Tracking System for Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities and has developed the Web-ABLLS. He has also produced an instructional video, Teaching Verbal Behavior: An Introduction to Parents Teaching Language. Continuing Education Credit Board Certified Behavior Analysts– Behavior Analysts, Inc., is an Approved Continuing Education Provider (#OP-02-0007). Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Board Certified Associate Behavior Analysts will be able to use this workshop for 6 hours of Type 2 CEU credit. Speech and Language Pathologists– Behavior Analysts, Inc., is an Approved Continuing Professional Development Provider by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board (PDP61). This workshop meets the requirements for 6 hours of CE credit. Educators– Educators will receive a certificate for 6 CE credits In order to receive a continuing education certificate, participants must have paid the tuition fee, attend the entire workshop (sign-in and sign-out required), and complete a course evaluation.
