Hi!

I am translating a text on secondary hyperparatiroidism and I can't find

this expression: bone alkaline phosphatase.

Could it be " fosfato alcalino óseo " ?

Hi,

It is not phosphate, but phosphatase (enzymes). Generally, in Engl they use

the singular, but in French (and I think in all Latin lang.), we use plural.

Other names used in French labs : BALP (B for bone - AL for alcaline et P

for phosphatases) and " ostases " .

Namely used as markers in osteoporosis.

Source: Merck Manual 17th Ed, En edition (printed) and Spanish edition

online at

www.msd.es/publicaciones/mmerck/MM_21_296.htm.

Cap. 296 of same gives a list of normal laboratory values in Sp.

Alkaline phosphatase (AP) is a mixture of isoenzymes. Bone or osseous AP is

one of these isoenzymes.

Detn. of serum total AP is a routine lab. investigation. Determination of

the isoenzymes is more difficult, and is not normally done unless there are

reasons for so doing.

The reason they are testing for bone AP in this case is probably that serum

total AP is elevated in hyperparathyroidism, but also in obstructive

jaundice and some other conditions, consequently they would determine bone

AP to rule out liver disease.

Hello,

In portuguese we say *fosfatase alcalina óssea*. *Fosfatase* is an enzime, you

cannot use *fosfato* instead.
