Guest guest
Question: Spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic. What does that mean when you learn that you have osteopenia and most likely are celiac. Hip replacement dr. says to walk and take calcium. Calcium and sodium is lost due to drug. Totally confused as to what is best for me. Can you advise? No virus found in this outgoing message. Guest guest
Hi , I can't speak to the osteopenia but a few of us here are celiac/gluten intolerant and I'm pretty sure that spiro does not affect that in any way. The hard thing for us gluten-intolerant folks is getting enough potassium in our diets, since the majority of K in the Standard American Diet comes from processed and fortified wheat products. > > Question: Spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic. Guest guest
Gonna have to jump in here. I am allergic to wheat and (contrary to msmith), am happy to let you know . . . am not having any difficulty whatsoever keeping up on K . . . am actually finding it quite easy. The majority of my k does NOT come from " processed or fortified wheat products " . The majority of my K comes from fresh fruits, veggies, greens and nuts. I will have to disagree that this is where most get their potassium from. In fact, not eating processed foods and breads (that most celiacs and wheat sensitive folks avoid) is a great plus for those with PA . . . helps you avoid a great amount of salt! > > > > Question: Spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic. Guest guest
, to clarify - I was referring to K content in the SAD (Standard American Diet) and not in DASH. > > > > > > Question: Spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic.
