Jill,I am SO happy for !!!!!! I just tried to send you an instant message. Did you get it? had no problems at all going from cast to brace. At least not in the beginning. And with being in a cast for so long I would think he would either.I think we waited 4 months for the xray after he had gone into a brace. So when will he get his brace?TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.html--- Subject: Going for a braceTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 8:42 PM

Hi Friends,

Well, after almost 2 and a half years of casting we are going to try a brace. measured 10* supine and 18-20* standing. Of course I would rather have the standing lower, but we seem to have gotten to the point of diminishing returns (plus broke the last two casts he was in!). My hope is that we will see improvement in the brace the way Tasha's did! During the long drive to Rochester said to me, "Mommy, this time when they take off the cast can it be off forever?" Oh boy...

Question for those in a brace- Is it hard for the kids to adjust- is it a big difference from the cast? How long did you wait for another xray? Anything unexpected I should plan for? I am nervous and anxious. As you all can relate- I am burnt out!

Thanks for the support!

Jill,

Congratulations! 2 and a half years is a long time for casting! ..."can it be forever?" This made me cry...I can hear my son saying that some day. I hope the brace is comfy and provides even more correction for .Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Thank you so much Tasha! I just IMed you back! We get molded tomorrow and get the brace (blue with cars) on Friday. The orthodist was so nice. He found out we traveled 7 hours and said we could come for the fitting on his lunch hour instead of our 3 pm apt time. I told him i would buy him lunch! (I think I embarassed my dh)

Our doc said we should get an xray in 6 month. We can do it at home and send it. Gee... down the street or 7 hours in February thru the snow belt? Bye-bye doc. I actually would come back if Matt would. Pray this holds or improves it or we will be back in a cast.

Thanks for the love and info. I will call you with questions soon, I am sure!

Thank you Heidi! My heart actually HURT physically when he said that. He has been so great about never complaining. I pray we get more correction or at least hold.

Thank you for caring! I will let you know how it fits on Friday.

Hi Jill,

Just to warn you, the bracing was much more lengthy than the casting procedure. This is just our experience, but the brace was a lot more uncomfortable than the cast and Ian hated it. I also found it difficult to take on and off if I didn't have any help and I never felt comfortable with knowing if it was on him correctly or not. I don't mean to sound negative, but it just wasn't as great as I thought it was going to be to finally get rid of the casts. Definitely leave an extra day for adjustments. I ended up having to go back for adjustments after one day of wearing the brace, so I was glad I didn't leave right after the brace was finished.

,You must have put it on correctly after all........Ian has been brace-free for a while now. Right? And we had the totally opposite experience. Although I liked how the cast did not come off, brace life is so much more easier. And has really helped .Our orthotist had marks(done with a Sharpie)on the straps so it was easy to know where it should be. And rarely complained in the beginning. And later on when he did I really think it was because it was time for a new brace.Jill, I do agree with .......hang around as long as you can to make sure it is fitting correctly. We normally get it fitted and wears it at the hospital for a couple of hours. We eat lunch, play at the park, etc. Then go back to see the orthotist to check for redness/pressure points. Then make

adjustments if needed. Thankfully we live very close(30-45 minutes away)to the hospital so we can jump in the car and go back when we need to.Because has been in casts for over 2 years I think YOU WILL make it work! And just keep reminding that he will have to go back to a cast. I believe he is old enough to understand that. Now when complains about his brace ONLY at night, I tell him if he does not wear it he could have to go back to wearing all day long and at night. It seems to make him think and the talk of not wanting to wear it goes away real fast!TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.html--- On Thu, 8/27/09, poohlvr

I agree with Tasha. The brace was so much easier for us than the cast. Dylan didn't seem to mind it anymore than the cast and I think he liked that he could at least take it off for baths, etc. and get an hour or so a day brace free and it wasn't as heavy either. He got x-rays about every 3 months when he was in the brace. The biggest issue I had with the brace was that he would get really sweaty in it. Of course, we live in Florida where it's really humid and hot :)

Congrats Jill!

We also have liked brace life much better with the exception of one awful brace.

Noah is checked every 3-4 months and gets a new brace everytime. My little boy grows like a weed! : ) Don't forget that it's very important to get an in-brace x-ray before you leave the hospital. This is necessary to make sure the brace is fitting properly.~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on 1 1/2 years of bracingAnd Mariella 7 months old currently waiting and watching at 11*

Hi Jen!

Good to know.... We are hoping for Noelle's first brace this October and i was wondering about the adjustment period too.... Do you remember when i first e-mailed you? Time has flown by! How is Ian doing?- Noelle's mommy, 2 1/2 years old and in 8th cast from Rochester NY, reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III
