And I suppose they expected you to chop

off both legs?!

I have not used my liver problems as a

primary basis for my claim. I do believe it’s at the root of all my

problems, but my disabilities stem from rheumatoid arthritis and neuropathy,

both of which can be crippling.

I’m going to take a couple of weeks

to relax a bit and try to lose a few pounds so I can back into my “work

clothes.” Hopefully by then, I will know either way and can decide

what to do. I may need to put some pressure on my rheumatologist as

well – he’s been reluctant to be more aggressive in tx’ing my

RA due to my liver issues. The liver doc assured him that it’s OK

and after I see him next week, I’ll get the latest blood tests & ask

him again how he feels about me moving forward with the RA tx.

Ideally, I would love to go back to work

full time and maybe with some luck and new drugs, I can do that.

Dorothy, From what I was told by the counselor, one would have to have cirrhosis to qualify for disability with hep c.. most liver diseases end with cirrhosis or a need to transplant so they told me that if I didnt have cirrhosis, I would not get disability based upon this virus.. but I did have early cirrhosis which was only called "Nodules wrapped in fibrous bands consistant with cirrhosis".. but even with that, they tried to deny me and it took me over 2 years to get it.. but the point MY doc told me is NOT TO GIVE UP... even if they deny you, keep appealing until you go to the judge because HE WILL read ALL your OWN physicians reports.. hope that helpsJackieSubject: RE: Soc Sec Exam DoneTo: Hepatitis_C_Central Date: Monday, June 30, 2008, 12:04 PM

they told me that too,, and then they told me that I could work 'sorting potato chips', or' watching tv' for a company that keeps stats on tv watchers..lol... but of course neither of those jobs would have paid anything near what I was making when I was working..... Climbing up on soapbox....the goal is to never give up... it amazes me that in AMERICA, those of us who have worked for many many years have to fight so hard for what would or should be seen as 'a right' and not a priviledge,, and illegals can come into this country and get all the medical help and funding to live without ever having had to pay into the system... it drives me nuts.. and if I can ever get well enough to fight this battle, that is where I would love to be,, working to make sure that those of us with this gawdawful disease can get the help we deserve... I am not basing my claim on liver

problems.

I agree that applicants shouldn’t

give up. My understanding is that a great percentage are approved on appeal.

That could also be that only those that are truly disabled do go through with

appeals.

Thats good Dorothy, then you probably stand a good chance on your first try. I think that they believe that if they keep denying you that you will 'give up' and go back to some kind of employment if you can and that would prove their point of your not being disabled in the first place.. so keep appealing it if they deny you.. I agree wholeheartedly –

unfortunately, a lot of people can’t sit back and wait 18 months for a

positive determination. How do they pay their rent? How do they

feed their children? How do they make the co-pays if they’re

fortunate enough to even have health insurance and put gas in the car to get to

the doctor?

I own my home, but pay $7,500 a year in

property taxes, not to mention my utility bills, car insurance, food, etc.

etc. I have NO income……none. I’ve already

depleted about $45K of my savings and the cost of everything rises every month.

It’s a terrible situation.

Right now, I’d be glad to watch TV for a salary – where can I get

one of those jobs??

Honey, I dont know where those jobs are,, but what I told my evaluator that there was NO job sorting potato chips up here in grass valley..lol.. I know the spot you are in,. Its horrible, I guess they want you to sell your home or something which is not right,, not right at all.. there has to be something that you can do,, but remember if you eventually get approved, they have to pay you all retro and you could replace what you've had to use from your savings... I wish I knew other options for you but I dont.. Maybe your attorney can help you with that... He should know how to make things work until you get approved...Jackie From:

Dear Dorothy,

I'm mostly a lurker although I do chime in when something strikes me

as important or if I have a question.

I mainly get all the info I need just from reading all of everyone

elses questions and all of the answers that are posted. There is

plenty of great info and support here.

I've been following the concerns you've had about the SSDI exam and

haven't spoken up until now...since it's over and done with...I will

say that I had a feeling that your appointment would go just like it

did...just like MINE did.

I was very unimpressed with the " psychologist/social worker "

and " physician " that checked me out...it was almost like a formality

than a real exam of any type. I also came out with negative feelings

about both...like they didn't care one way or the other. They were

just doing a job they are paid to do and that job is preventing

anyone from getting SSDI.

Turns out that for me the depression was the key factor in winning my

case...and all of the other " life threatning " stuff came second.

I got a lawyer right after the exam but I thought perhaps I had

screwed up by going to the doc without consulting with a lawyer

first...

I was turned down initially, then turned down on the appeal, then I

was waiting for a hearing date to be set with a judge

and " surprise! " ...here comes a letter from SSA saying that my case

was reviewed and that I was found to be disabled!

The letter included the notes from the two SSDI exams I had with

their docs and surprisingly...it was mostly in favor of me. I didn't

get that impression when I was with them so I was surprised for sure.

I didn't bring my medication or notes from the docs...I had already

turned that info in with my application. The doc visits were pretty

short and sweet(?).

So...you never know what will come from these SSDI docs. If you can

get a lawyer on retainer...I would do so. It is worth the money you

have to give them if/when you win...BUT YOU WILL WIN!

Don't give up...it's so maddening, I know it is. We all pretty much

went through the waiting to get the SSDI...working again may screw up

what you have so far...please consult a lawyer and please keep

posting and visiting this website for support and info!!

Thank you for relaying your story,

. I do have an attorney specializing in these cases – they filed

the initial application for me as I was overwhelmed at the time with the

interferon treatment and trying to fight my dependency on pain pills.

I really don’t believe that these

doctors are “out to get us” - they are just doing a job.

There is no way that they can appreciate what each of us has been through in a

matter of 10 minutes. They are merely reporting their findings & they

can’t possibly be complete.

For instance, since I have arthritis in my

hands, she handed me a piece of cloth with a zipper and asked me to zip it up

with one hand and then unzip it with the other. I was able to do

that. But she doesn’t understand that some mornings, I can’t

even hold a pen to sign my name or lift a container of milk.

She can see that my leg is atrophied, but

I can walk…..and since I was an office manager, I guess they think I

could sit at a desk all day. In reality, I’m more comfortable

standing most of the time as the pressure on the back of my leg makes the

neuropathy worse. I usually sit on the edge of the chair.

I did check off both anxiety and

depression on the form they gave me, but she never asked about it. I don’t

know if they might ask me to see any other doctors yet or this was it.

Perhaps the documents sent by my doctors

will help my case, but I know that I will most likely be denied now. One

of my doctors told me last week that I’ll be denied and then I’ll

win – it’s a game, he said.

I wonder why you were turned down even

with positive reports from your exams? See – the doctors are not

out to get us…..it’s the damn system!

I did want to clarify that I really didn't mean to single out the

doctors being the problem...they are a part of the whole system

that's a problem.

Your doctor did soooo much more than mine...not much physical exam

wise either.

It sounds to me like you and I are/were in the same boat. I was an

office manager/assistant to the president (both at the same time!)

and I also preferred to stand but had to do sitting too and it all

hurt.

The pain pills were finally what put me over the top. I had to get

stronger ones and I couldn't handle it between the HCV, Fibro, CFS,

Cryo...I couldn't work anymore. I had been bought out of a five year

work contract and had a year that was totally paid and I was suppose

to apply for SSDI.

I kept thinking I just needed a long break...I've never NOT worked.

I went back to a new job that was very much low key...receptionist,

admin work...easy for a reason. I didn't want to kill myself with a

high powered/high energy/stressful job. Well, was fired because I

needed to be on leave for a week or two per the doc. Only worked

there 7mos so not a year yet.

I think it did help me get the SSDI because of my work history and

then suddenly I can't even the simpliest things.

I agree with your doc...it is a game. I hope you win.

Liz, a LOT of those government workers ARE rude,, like the one who told me that I could sort potato chips.. they remind me of the state workers in the DMV's office.. but who are you going to tell? Either the person wont tell you WHO their supervisor is or the disconnect you when they 'try' to connect you to that person and you get disconnected... those ppl usually have a bad attitude too because they have to work so they act like everyone must have to work too... I guess I am losing touch with the real world , cause in my universe that shit wouldn't fly lol I always get their operator numbers and write them down and if I have a problem I take it to the supervisor and tell them the number and what they did .Damn their attitudes , we have the right to be treated with courtesy and respect . Social security always hands out these patient rights booklets and I don't hesitate to get someone in trouble when they step over their boundries . Each of us suffers enough with this disease we don't need to get crap from some underpaid nobody who just wants to hurt our feelings . Sorry for the venting ..... some things just piss me off

I have also noticed a shift in attitude in

these types of workers. I remember years ago going to NY’s Motor

Vehicle Dept. was a nightmare.

Today, it’s a pleasure…..well,

not exactly a pleasure, but it is no longer a nightmare. People are

treated courteously and the wait time is limited.

And when I had to go into the social

security office a month or so ago to present my original birth certificate,

they couldn’t have been nicer. I was in and out of there in under

10 minutes.

Even the post office – I sell on

eBay so I’m at the post office almost on a daily basis. Except for

one woman there, the postal workers are delightful and go out of their way to

be helpful.

Maybe it has something to do with the drop

in clients handled face-to-face. Since I haven’t actually been

inside the DMV in years and rarely mail a letter or pay a bill by mail, perhaps

the workers realize that their jobs are dependent on us. The more people

doing their business on-line, the fewer jobs required in the local offices.

After all, they can send the on-line jobs

to India

to process!! But don’t get me started on that!

I think I

will. I’ll send it to the local paper, and even Obama.

Saw my

shrink today. I told him my depression was getting worse since he lowered

my Effexor and increased my Wellbutrin. I thought he’d reverse

that. Instead he did more of the same, decreasing Effexor,

increasing Wellbutrin (He has been leaving my Buspar alone). I asked him

about serotonin, and he thought the low dose of Effexor would be enough.

I think he’s

trying to improve my brain fog, but he doesn’t seem to understand that

this is a symptom and side effect. I’ll give it a try but if it

doesn’t work, I’m calling him back. He wants to see me again

in 3 weeks anyway.

Due to my

insurance, he’s about the only psychiatrist I can see.

Good! It won’t make a

difference, but if more of us write to our local legislators, maybe one of them

will take a look at the problem!!

And interestingly…….I just

came from my annual gynecological visit and she wrote me a script for

Effexor. She said it will help my hot flashes, help anxiety and also help

my chronic pain – sounds like a winner to me!!

Hope it’s making a difference for

your hot flashes, (HA!)
