Hi Nikki--

Check out the file section of the list. Also, the database section has a

provider database. There is a lot of good information in there. I also

just added the reading list that Guppy compiled by asking everyone

on the chatlist to send in their top ten books. The one that I wish I had

read first was Lynn Hamilton's Facing Autism.

Also, the thing that has greatly helped me is to read about normal early

childhood and brain developement so that I could find where Karl stopped and

encourage the his next steps from there. The other thing that helped was to

keep a journal both to help track down what was causing his tantrums and

keep track of progress.

Don't forget to grieve though. Bless your heart. It's tough getting hit

with this, much less at the holidays. I know I could even talk about it for

the first 6 months without welling up in tears.

Just know that there's a lot of hope. We've been very blessed that since a

year ago May, Karl has gone from out of control superhyperactivity and

trantrums and 1-2 word utterances that were barely understandable to a much

calmer, self controlled kid who understands how to wait, who is completely

verbal and uses please and thank you, who loves to be my kitchen helper and

make pancakes and put away the silverware, who can talk about his and

other's emotions and who is starting to like to play with other kids and

starting to have real spontaneous conversations--we're starting him in a

typical preschool with a shadow next month. It's the hardest, most

exhausting, most demanding work that I've ever done.

You're the one who has to figure it what makes sense for your child--be that

diet, supplements, ABA, Son Rise, floor time, schools, speech, occupational

therapy, sensory integration, NAET, medication, chelation. . . .You can

waste a lot of time looking for a doctor or psychologist to tell you what to

do. Consider yourself like a contractor. This list is a great place to

start, a great place to ask questions. Goodness knows, there's someone on

the list who tried or has an opinion about all of the above.

The worksheet is in the files folder on this Yahoo Group.

1. Log in here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/insideoutweightloss/

2. Click Files in the left frame

3. Right-click how-do-you-know-you-want-to-change.pdf and save it to a location

on your computer.

You might want to also save the file, sample-answers.pdf

Welcome. I am new, too. :)
