Guest guest
I have reached toxicity levels with Colchicine already, as manifested by diarrhea, so I am off Colchi at this point. Would it be safe to have some Ibuprofen to kill some pain away? Guest guest
Hi, I use to have gout often. Here is what I did and it works everytime. And since the drugs did not work you have nothing to loose. 1. Buy a bottle of this supplement and take as directed. Keep around the house. http://www.goutcure.com/- main ingredient is yuca 2. You are too acidic. you need to get alkaline fast. Lemons work well.go buy 6 or 10 lemons, drink lots of lemon water over the next couple days. Just squeeze the juice of 1 lemon in a glass fill with water and drink. drink lots of water to flush out. Good luck. I know your pain. Guest guest
If colchicine did not work it may not be gout but pseudogout.I would not try the lemon one first as suspect that lemon is acidic. Would stay away from who ever recommended this to make you more "alkaline." If you want to increase uric acid excretion you need to alkalinize the urine. Not recommended during acute gout as I recall. Na bicarb works well if SS might increase BP. CE Grim MD Hi, I use to have gout often. Here is what I did and it works everytime. Guest guest
Colchicine is good.....except for the diarrhea which seems to hit about half who take it. Allopurinol if it tends to reoccur and Ibuprofen is a good NSAID for it but raises BP in some and irritates the gut in others. Naproxen is a good one for gout too. .......and watch those red meats - high in sodium anyway! Guest guest
Dependes on dose but here are some. Most that take it will weight gain. Make sure you do as your Dr says. Do not just stop it. Side-effects of prednisone can be both short-term and long-term. Some of the prednisone side effects are as follows: 1.Weight Gain: Weight gain is the most common side-effect of prednisone. Fluid retention is the main culprit when it comes to weight gain. Another related prednisone side-effect is accumulation of extra fat in the body. This fat gets deposited in particular areas like the back, abdomen and face. The weight gained due to prednisone is lost after cessation of use of steroids. 2.Acne: Acne, commonly known as steroid acne, is one of the side effects of prednisone use. This acne may occur on the face, back or arms. However, chest is the most common area of outbreak. There are medications for curing this type of acne. Acne is not a long-term side effect. It decreases after dosage of prednisone is reduced 3.Susceptibility to infections: The immune system of a person becomes weak due to prolonged use of prednisone, due to which the body becomes more susceptible to internal and external infections. 4.Eyesight: Long term use of prednisone can affect the eyes. It tends to increase the pressure inside eyes which is known as glaucoma. Long term use of prednisone can lead to development of cataract. Unlike other side-effects of prednisone use, cataract does not reduce after the stoppage of prednisone. 5.Insomnia: Loss of sleep, which is known as insomnia is one of prednisones side-effects as well. Patients on prednisone for a long time find it difficult to sleep. But this side-effect of prednisone is not very common. > > > > > > > > > > > > > A gout attack on Christmas is one of the worst experience one can have. Guest guest
The big side effect is stomach upset. It increases reflux. Also causes some insomnia in some. Guest guest
Hi, I have no data, I have my experience though and lots of advice from forums like this one that focus on using food to prevent things like gout attacks. I would rather use the natural method that works for me than use another drug and then have to weigh up what is worse, the side effects of that drug or the current pain? Prednisone makes me feel terrible. No thanks. I would rather get my body ph balanced (or at least less acidic) and avoid the terrible gout attacks altogether. For me gout attacks tells me that I am too acidic. What can I do if I am too acidic? - I can stop all booze and meat for while, stop acidic foods (google it for a list). I can drink lots of water (with lemon). I can eat more alkaline foods like leafy green veggies which is basically DASHING anyway. BTW I was in emergency a couple days ago, I saw 5 suspected gout cases limp in the door in 3 hrs. All were big, puffy overweight men in 40s or 50s. This time of year we can all tend to over eat and if you have a really acidic diet the Christmas season of eating and drinking can push us over the gout threshold. In my opinion, it is what you eat from now on that will help prevent any future gout attacks, even with my PA I don't get gout attacks anymore. It took me a couple years of gout pain to realize that I was in control of any future gout attacks. If I ate loads of acidic foods I would most likely get gout. I hope this helps. Happy New Year everyone. Chris > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > A gout attack on Christmas is one of the worst experience > > > > one can have. Guest guest
A lot of times experience is the best teacher but there are always doubters, IMHO. A Google search shows a lot of references that shows lemons might just be a natural answer that the drug companies don't want you to know about! For those from the " show me state " , start here: I know nothing about gout but could it be the vitamin C in lemons? Vitamin C 112 mg 187% daily recommended per cup (244g) of lemon juice. (Note comment regarding ARBs) Source: http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1938/2 The effects of vitamin C supplementation on serum concentrations of uric acid: Results of a randomized controlled trial In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin C at 500 mg/day for 2 months reduced serum uric acid concentration. This finding suggests that vitamin C might be beneficial in the prevention or management of gout and other urate-related diseases. Source: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/art.21105/full Pathophysiology Uric acid in the blood is saturated at 6.4-6.8 mg/dL at ambient conditions, with the upper limit of solubility placed at 7 mg/dL. Urate is freely filtered at the glomerulus, reabsorbed, secreted, and then again reabsorbed in the proximal tubule. The recent cloning of certain urate transporters will facilitate the understanding of specific mechanisms by which urate is handled in the kidney and small intestines. A urate/anion exchanger (URAT1) has been identified in the brush-border membrane of the kidneys and is inhibited by an angiotensin II receptor blocker, losartan. A human organic anion transporter (hOAT1) has been found to be inhibited by both uricosuric drugs and antiuricosuric drugs, while another urate transporter (UAT) has been found to facilitate urate efflux out of the cells. These transporters may account for the reabsorption, secretion, and reabsorption pattern of renal handling of urate. Guest guest
This information from Mayo gives information on treatment for gout. Some complementary and alternative treatments that have been studied include: Coffee. Studies have found an association between coffee drinking — both regular and decaffeinated coffee — and lower uric acid levels, though no study has demonstrated how or why coffee may have an influence on uric acid in your body. The available evidence isn't enough to encourage noncoffee drinkers to start, but it may give researchers clues to new ways of treating gout in the future. Vitamin C. Supplements containing vitamin C may reduce the levels of uric acid in your blood. However, vitamin C hasn't been studied as a treatment for gout. Don't assume that if a little vitamin C is good for you, then lots is better. Megadoses of vitamin C may increase your body's uric acid levels. Talk to your doctor about what a reasonable dose of vitamin C may be. And don't forget that you can increase your vitamin C intake by eating more fruits and vegetables, especially oranges. Cherries. Cherries have been associated with lower levels of uric acid in studies, but it isn't clear if they have any effect on gout signs and symptoms. Adding cherries and other dark-colored fruits, such as blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes and raspberries, to your diet may be a safe way to supplement your gout treatment, but discuss it with your doctor first. http://www.bing.com/health/article/mayo-MADS00090/Gout?q=gout & qpvt=+gout+ > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > A gout attack on Christmas is one of the worst experience > > > > > > one can have. Guest guest
Risk factors You're more likely to develop gout if you have high levels of uric acid in your body. Factors that increase the uric acid level in your body include: Lifestyle factors. Choices you make in your everyday life may increase your risk of gout. Excessive alcohol use — generally more than two drinks a day for men and more than one for women — increases the risk of gout. Medical conditions. Certain diseases and conditions make it more likely that you'll develop gout. These include untreated high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood (hyperlipidemia), and narrowing of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Certain medications. The use of thiazide diuretics — commonly used to treat hypertension — and low-dose aspirin also can increase uric acid levels. So can the use of anti-rejection drugs prescribed for people who have undergone an organ transplant. Family history of gout. If other members of your family have had gout, you're more likely to develop the disease. Age and sex. Gout occurs more often in men than it does in women, primarily because women tend to have lower uric acid levels than men do. After menopause, however, women's uric acid levels approach those of men. Men also are more likely to develop gout earlier — usually between the ages of 40 and 50 — whereas women generally develop signs and symptoms after menopause. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > A gout attack on Christmas is one of the worst experience > > > > > > > one can have. Guest guest
Francis, this post specifically mentions oranges for vit. C. There was something about the way the body process oranges that made it less effective than lemons for gout. I can't lay my hands on it right now. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > A gout attack on Christmas is one of the worst experience > > > > > > > one can have. Guest guest
Theory is good but trials are the answer.Example: lets give men estrogens to make their heart disease risk like women. They VA did this years ago. Result as I recall was more deaths in those on estrogens. In conclusion, supplementation with vitamin C at 500 mg/day for 2 months reduced serum uric acid concentration. This finding suggests that vitamin C might be beneficial in the prevention or management of gout and other urate-related diseases. So where are the 5 or more years trials testing Vit C and uric acid etc? in humans. Say with high uric acid and gout.CE Grim MDBeware of statements that the drug companies dont want you to know about. I can assure you that if money can be made they will be on it.CE Grim MD A lot of times experience is the best teacher but there are always doubters, IMHO. A Google search shows a lot of references that shows lemons might just be a natural answer that the drug companies don't want you to know about! For those from the "show me state", start here: I know nothing about gout but could it be the vitamin C in lemons? Vitamin C 112 mg 187% daily recommended per cup (244g) of lemon juice.
