Hi Sara

Welcome to the list! I am Tracey and my youngest daughter, Skylar age 11, was

diagnosed autistic at age 3. We live in a small town in Ontario, Canada. This

is a great group of people. I have found it to be a great source of information

and support. It is also a good place to vent when you are having a rough day

either with kids, school, therapists or just life in general. I know it has

been a great help to me. It is good to have you with us. I look forward to

hearing more from you.

New and Saying Hello

My name is Sara and I'm mother to two wonderful children, Elise and

Luke. Elise is 2.5 years and was diagnosed with ASD earlier this

year. Luke is four months. We live in Southern California

Elise appeared to develop normally her first year although she had

these little quirks that no one seemed to be concerned about (other

than me). She did not want to breastfeed nor did she want to be

held or cuddled. She loved playing on her own and just seemed to

have her own way of doing things. Around her first birthday her

language development began to slow and she still was not walking.

We moved from Chicago around this time so we chalked it up to that.

Elise added a word here or there the next few months and began

walking around 18 months. None of her doctors were concerned, but I

was so I called the school district and was directed to our regional

center. She was evaluated last fall and began speech therapy in

November. At that time I started noticing other concerning

behaviors. After attending our first group therapy session early

this year, I had to ASK the therapists if they thought Elise was

displaying Autistic behaviors. They said yes, but suggested I wait

to get her diagnosed until she was 2 years 9 months. I ignored

their advice and she received a diagnosis two weeks later(late

February).

Elise is currrently attending the Early Childhood Partial

Hospitalization Program at UCLA (Baically ABA/DTT and additional

therapies...ST, OT, RT). She will complete the program in early

June. The program has been amazing and Elise has excelled there.

I'm currently working on securing services for after the program.

Elise is verbal and is talking more every day. She is

commenting/relating more to others and things that are going on

around her. Her tantrums are practically non-existent, but she does

get frustrated and whiny a lot. Her stimming behavior is mild (hand

posturing) and she loves social situations even though she doesn't

quite get how to play WITH children her own age (except on the

playground). Sometimes I have to think twice about her behavior and

question if it is her being two or autistic.

I am VERY new to all of this, so please excuse my green questions

(as I'm sure you've answered them many times before). If anyone has

any ideas/advice for someone at this point in the process, I would

greatly appreciate it. It's great to have found a place

specifically for autistic girls!

Thanks!

Sara, mommy to

Elise, 2.5 years, ASD

Luke, 4 months

Welcome, Sara. I'm Penny (with a Y), and lived in Torrance for

nearly 5 years. I live in Michigan now. I have 6 year old and 4

year old twins. (They all have birthdays really soon, so they're

almost 7, 5, and 5.) One of my twins is on the spectrum. We've

known for almost 3 years, and have a home ABA program, and have

recently begun adding Floortime to what we do. We're GFCFSF and

biomedical.

Computer about to shut down. Will hit post and try later.

Sara, hope we can all help. I too, wonder about behaviors, but I have

4 children and kara is just not in the mold, even though all children

are different. I am now wondering who and how much I should tell

coaches, since she is starting to play sports. I don't want to scare

them, which has happened in the past.

(mom to Kara 9)
