I have gained twenty pounds in one year and am miserable. I run everyday, eat great all through the day and I wake up an hour after I fall asleep at night and eat. I fall back to sleep and wake up every hour and eat something. It is horribly embarrassing and I don't know what do do about it. I've read about night time eating syndrome and I tried the strategies and got nowhere. I don't know what to do. Is there anyone who has any suggestions/ thoughts? ? Thank you. Guest guest
Oh, I'm so sorry. I do not know anything about that particular condition. I know until I started listening to the podcasts I was having a terrible time eating in the evening, in particular. It is such a hopeless feeling. I really think you may also want to get the book that was recommended on this site by another wise woman - " The Four Day Win " by Martha Beck. I'm in the midst of it and she has some very helpful exercises within the book. There's also another podcast called Mind Theater and in the listing of programs she actually has a weight loss hypnosis session which might really help as well. Best of luck. You are not alone and do not give up. Joan > I joined this group after listening to several Inside/Out Weightloss > podcasts. Guest guest
, My sister has the same problem and eats a tablespoon of peanut butter right before she goes to bed. It seems to really help her. I know that seems like a really simple solution but it might be worth a try. Quote of the Day " Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns. I am thankful that thorns have roses. Guest guest
I have had the same problem before - it got much better when I started taking this supplement called 5HTP before bed. Melatonin, which you can get in any health food store, works really well to help you sleep through the night also. The book The Mood Cure has been a great resource for me in remedying this problem. There are audio hypnosis CDs available online that help too. Glenn Harrold's Deep Sleep Every Night has worked for me. I hope that this helps . I used to have the same problem and still do ocassionally, but hardly ever. Guest guest
What are the positive things you get from eating at night? Are you eating things that you don't eat during the day? Are you thinking about something that you don't think about during the day? Every behavior has a positive intent, and this one is strong. Look for the positive in that behavior and devise an alternative way to provide the good feelings it gives you. I found that I ate to comfort me when I was stressed. Now, when I recognize stress, I often choose to resolve the stress rather than eat a food. > Is there anyone who has any suggestions/thoughts?? Guest guest
Thank you for the message. It's true-the more I obsess about it, the worse it is getting. All day long, I plan for what I'm not going to do and then it all goes to pieces. I don't keep any bad foods in the house but I don't think it matters what I'm eating, but that I am. I'm going to try some meditation and see how that goes. The only thing I can say is that your statement above frames your action in the negative. talks about framing our actions in the positive. Maybe that is something to consider. " I plan activities that I can do and I keep healthy foods in the house " instead of the above. Just a thought.

Guest guest
I don't have an answer to your question (only you do), but do you have any specific triggers that happen at night (besides just the time of day)? For example, are you tired, watching tv, eating out of habit, etc.? If you can figure out the trigger, you may be able to figure out what your body (or mind) is really asking for, rather than overeating. Is the food specific (like loaded with sugar or salt) or does it vary? Bev
Guest guest
Hello A really simple solution for me was to knit. I took up knitting because a friend of mine was interested in it and I've found it's very hard to eat when both of my hands are constantly occupied with a task, such as knitting. It doesn't always work - I've also found knitting is great for being able to put it down and pick it up without much hassle, which opens doors for snacking. But still, if it helps some of the time, I'll keep doing it! Is there anything you can think of where you could occupy your hands like that? Another option is to keep healthy snacks around. I've found that a half a piece of toast with lowfat cream cheese, or even a couple hard-boiled eggs feel a lot better in my stomach than a handful of chips, mostly because I don't feel so bad about eating them. Guest guest
I do better if I don't stay up late. If I'm not sleepy, I just go to bed and read.Hope this helps. Guest guest
I think it happens more when I'm working at night (my job is very demanding)or when I'm tired. It's usually when I'm done with everything and just need to go to bed. And it's usually something carby. I dont have junk food in the house, but it's surprising how much I can OD on grapes, Kashi cereal, fat free popcorn or natural peanut butter. Like I said, the most frustrating thing is that even WHILE I'm doing it, I know I shouldn't be, and yet I can't stop. I know 's podcasts would suggest that I'm not alligned, but I dont know how to fix that. I've been keeping my journal too, but nothing's clicking yet. I like the idea of knitting, I may try that or drawing instead to keep my hands busy. Thanks for the suggestions! > > I don't have an answer to your question (only you do), but do you have > any specific triggers that happen at night (besides just the time of > day)? Guest guest
Another thing that came to me is that you could ask yourself, " What would I like instead (of overeating) " or " What would I like to do instead? " For instance, someone mentioned knitting. Also, I've found that if I'm tired, I opt to go to sleep rather than eating. I used to think sleeping was counterproductive to weight loss because it's inactive, but the reality is that when it's late and I'm tired, I'm not doing anything that is active anyway, and I'm more prone to want to eat when I really just need to sleep. Guest guest
I read your other replies and that you pointed out that you eat when you're working at night or tired. Food might be how you 'relax.' Maybe find another way to relax and " recenter? " > > Hi! > I have this uncontrollable eating habit at night. I dont binge, per se. But I do overeat at night. Guest guest
I have exactly the same problem! The minute I am up too late, I eat Kashi cereal, bread, peanut butter and jam, granola...hello carbs! And like me, you have already figured out the problem: " It's usually when I'm done with everything and just need to go to bed. " So how have I been dealing with it? Trying to find something to occupy myself (such as knitting) doesn't work for me at night because like you said, I just need to sleep. So my new thing is to get ready for bed, most importantly brush my teeth, as soon as I start overeating (Well, I try to do it BEFORE I start eating, but that usually doesn't happen). Then I dont want to eat because a) food tastes nasty mixed with minty toothpaste and I know I'll just have to go brush my clean teeth again, which seems like a lot of work when I am exhausted. Good luck! Kirsten > > > > I don't have an answer to your question (only you do), but do you have > > any specific triggers that happen at night (besides just the time of > > day)? Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your suggestions! It's nice to know I have some company I think you guys are right, I'm too wired to sleep so I use eating as a way to " relax " before I go to bed. My new strategy: Brushing my teeth and doing something to re-center, like yoga or drawing. We'll see how that works. Thanks again. > > > > > > I don't have an answer to your question (only you do), but do you have > > > any specific triggers that happen at night (besides just the time of > > > day)? Guest guest
Hi Everyone! Thanks for all the replies & messages about the meditation, adhd & exercise questions. I am going to write back, I've just had to limit my computer time because I tend to get stuck here! I'm going to write this one real quick & " hang up " ! I really hear ya about the late night eating. I've always been a terrible sleeper, so I tend to prowl the house after everyone has gone to sleep. I don't know why, but I always wait until very late to start making lunches for the next day. Well, of course, with getting out all the foods to put in the lunch bags, I end up snacking away, too. It's a terrible habit & one I'm really trying to break. I love to knit, as suggested earlier, but lately haven't been able to sit still long enough. The only time I actually will sit in one place seems to be in front of the computer & I'm trying to cut back. I will " stay " in one place gladly, but that is only on my treadmill, elipctical or exercise bike. I usually walk my dogs after dinner & also get on some piece of exercise equiptment for a bit. I'm always in the middle of a book & that seems to be the only time I read anymore. I hop on an exercise machine to get a few pages out of the way. Unfortunately, reading has become a chore sometimes Sad, because I love to read. I used to read in bed every night & that would put me to sleep. That is actually my favorite way to fall asleep. Well, my husband goes to bed before me & for the past few years has NOT been ok with my reading lamp on while he is trying to sleep. I guess I can pinpoint the change in my sleeping & night eating habits to this exact reason. I can't really blame him, because he needs to sleep. The problem is, I really need to sleep, too, & that's the only way I can go to bed at a decent hour... with a good book. I do sleep with my ipod, usually listening to talk shows or, lately, meditation. It helps, but I still need to get myself in there sooner, both to avoid the kitchen & so I can get up refreshed in the morning. Uggg, it's a constant struggle. Have a good night all!!! Guest guest
I'm new here, first post -- hi! I'm 47, happily married, no children, live in New England, looking to lose 27 pounds. Regarding night eating, I obviously don't know specifically why you are, but I've found when I am eating seemingly uncontrollably, if I stop and assess what happened just prior to the eating, I can usually figure it out. It doesn't mean I don't eat! But the first step is to begin identifying it. What were you doing? Who were you talking to? What feelings came up? For me, I found I was eating every time I talked to my husband about the house we're building. Conversation, even a non-argumentative conversation, led to me wanting to eat. Result? The house is a stressor for me! As a newbie, I've only just started listening to 's podcasts, but plan on catching up to the current ones in just a few days. So far I love her :-)
