Guest guest
Hi, Donna. Our son had strep with no sore throat. He just felt a tickle and was coughing occasionally, so the doc checked him for strep. Plus, he was running a low grade fever that we didn't realize. He took antibiotic after antibiotic and couldn't seem to rid himself of the strep for months. Finally, the doctors said that if the last antibiotic didn't work, they would consider him a carrier. It did though. I have a nephew (also OCD) that couldn't rid himself of strep either. He tried every antibiotic possible, but still had it. He ended up getting his tonsils out to get rid of the strep. Amazingly, they both tested negative for PANDAS. BJ > > Thanks, Jordana. I read online that lots of people can have strep and never show any signs of a sore throat (which most of us associate with a strep infection), so it's a difficult one to spot sometimes. I'll have to read up on the other symptoms of strep so I know what to watch for, in future. > > I also wanted to ask you if trich can start with hair " twirling " -- my son often puts his finger in his hair and twirls it around so that the hair wraps itself around the finger. He usually does this when he's watching TV, and I wondered if this might be a precursor to trich, or am I just reading too much into things again? He also has some sensory integration problems, so maybe he's just doing it for the sensory stimulation ? He'll do it until the hair is pulled pretty tightly --he did it to me one time and it hurt! > Thanks, > Donna >
Guest guest
Just a quick note that strep can be in other parts of the body, doesn't necessarily have to be strep throat.
Guest guest
Wow! Never thought about that, Chris. Good info to know. If it was showing up in a throat culture, should you assume it is strep throat though? Just curious. That was the case with Josh. No typical symptoms, but the throat cultures kept coming back positive. (Many years ago now). And if it's elsewhere in the body, how is it detected? Temperature? Blood test? And if it's elsewhere, would it show up on titer tests? Sorry for all the questions. . Just curious. ) BJ > > Just a quick note that strep can be in other parts of the body, > doesn't necessarily have to be strep throat. > > >
