Guest guest
Oh, boy. I just had a client bring to me a 12 week old Rottweiler pup with severe luxation in both hips. Radiographically and on physical exam, the laxity is profound. Gait abnormalities 5/5 both hind limbs- ataxia and crossing over both limbs. Painful to palpation of hips and pelvis. Pup is unwilling to stand for any longer than 5 seconds at a time. Difficulty rising from the down position. He's a noodle. Owner is willing to do what she can within limits. I know the surgeons in my area will not touch this dog until he is older, so I figure we need to get this puppy stronger and more functional until he's a candidate for surgical correction-whichever one the owner wants to go for. He's growing fast, and he is completely untrained. His attitude is resigned and quiet with some passive resistance to any work. He is not currently treat motivated. So, I started loading the clicker today, and owner has instructions to work with him on clicker training as a place to start until I could pick your collective brains As common as this condition is in the canine world, I've never tried to rehab anything this young with growth plates wide enough to drive a truck through and a breed that is known to grow with lightening speed. I would welcome suggestions. I do not have UWTM.
