Guest guest
Carla, I saw your post on the other board too. I tell you what, I have a phone interview for the 12th. So I'll let you know how mine goes, you let me know how yours goes. I have Savannah's educational DX, but I don't have the medical yet. I am fighting with my insurance company about paying for it. They say it is not a medical need. WHAT? I don't know if that will have an effect or not. I am sure they will send me to their doctors anyway. Guest guest
Thanks Kitty!! My phone interview is on the 9th! So I will post and let everyone know what's up. I wish you all the luck in the world with yours. I don't think it matters about the med. dx. They can get it if they need it!! Take care and thanks!!! Guest guest
No problem, we parents need stick together. Your interview will be before mine, so hopefully I can get an idea of what to expect. The IEP team told me all I needed was the educational DX. That I didn't have to have the Medical. And I know they can send her to their own doctors if the want (which with my luck they will) So I am praying none of us have a problem. Do you have any idea how much support they give? I mean even $20 a month would help (every bit counts) But I am trying to look into home ABA therapy later, and I know that cost a lot. (I think) Kitty > > > Hi, I called Social Security on Thurs. to see about getting SSI > for > > > both kids. I have a phone interview set for next week, which is > > > good. Guest guest
It is all based on income. Also, I think it varies by each state! I will for sure let you know how it goes...my stomach knots up thinking of it. I get nervous about things like this, even school conferences make me nervous!! Guest guest
I am looking into that as well Kitty! I can apply through Social Security. With Doug being laid-off and his unemployment being up we're strapped. If you ever want to talk privately...e-mail me anytime! Guest guest
I was under the impression that SSI was an ELEGIBILITY program. Public schools are an ENTITLEMENT program. The issue with eligibility comes into play big time when you are an adult with a disability and trying to balance having some type of work with dignity while still having access to Medicaid insurance or even just survive on the $550/month benefit. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++ SSI is a WELFARE program. It is an entitlement program based on financial need of those who happen to be also disabled. The $2,000 limit applies to the applicants resources (in this case likely your child). In addition, the family can generally have another $3,000 in resources. You can bundle the $5,000 into one item, etc. Homestead is exempt, they do look at every other source of funding and income, including vehicles. If you do finally qualify, the dollar amount received each month can vary based on the family income that month. In addition, you must keep receipts and careful records of how the money from SSI is spent, there are specific rules as to how it can be used. If all the money is not spent each month, once a certain reserve amount is met, the recipient cannot receive further funds until that balance is spent down. If you do not qualify financially, many times having just the determination of disability from the SSA can open doors in different states for various services. Guest guest
This is why it's so important to set up a Special Needs Trust for your child and put what ever savings and assets that you are dedicating for you child in there. S. Re: SSI Hi Janet you are so right it seems if you do qualify you will never get ahead?? no CD no mutual nothing~! Nat SSI SSI is a federal program. As such, it is essentially the same throughout the nation. The only difference being that in different areas the family can have higher or lower income levels. SSI is a WELFARE program. Guest guest
Hi they told us in CA there can be no trust or savings above $ 2000 period? its more than 500 here but the cost of living is more also big time! Guest guest
Well, trust laws vary from state to state just like state taxes, insurance coverage laws, and Medicaid. In Texas there is a financial vehicle called a " Special Needs Trust " where assets over $2000 can be held for the benefit of the child/adult with special needs. Gifts given under " Uniform Gifts to Minors " act do not fall under this category and are counted as property of the child/person with special needs. There is a local financial advisor who focuses on these named Steve Rhatigan. www.stemarkassociates.com I believe. He speaks on a regular basis to groups around the Houston area. I've also seen some of the bigger financial firms now have experts who specialize in this area.
