Guest guest
As our three previous coleagues say, it's a sign not a symptom. LP Renal disease Dear colleagues, Does anybody know the English name of the symptom of renal disease, whereby pain is induced by knocking the area of kidneys? In the Russian literature, it is known as Pasternatsky's symptom. Best regards, S. Sosnovsky Biomedical Translation & Editing asosnov@... Guest guest
In Argentina, I remember we called it the " signo del punio " (fist sign), and we learnt it in 4th year, so you can imagine the poor patient, always would indicate pain (but most probably from a fist too enthusiastic than from a real kidney problem). Guest guest
Dear , In the course of my career as a doctor and as a translator I have never come across a document originally written in English in which the sign being discussed was described with reference to the name of its suspected discoverer. In my Polish-English translation I use the phrase " tenderness to percussion (or fist percussion) over the costovertebral angle (or over the affected kidney). " According to my experience and knowledge it is a legitimate solution to the translator's dilemma. By the way, in Poland we call it Goldflam's sign. As anybody could guess, Goldflam was a famous Polish doctor . . .
