Guest guest
Hello, Just a quick question.... my son is awaiting to see a couple different surgeons and also go to Shrinner's to dicuss casting. We leave on Monday to see one doctor in Seattle. I know many of you are struggling with your own children and it amazes me how strong you all are!!! Keep it up!! Quickly, My son is at a 75 curvature and just had a V-Q scan.... He had 33%use of the left and 67% use of the right. I am new to this type of scan. I was wondering, which I am sure many of you have been through, how these numbers compared to other children with such degrees of curvature??? Mainly just curious is all! Thank you all!.... Oh and have a wonderful Labor Day weekend! Perkins

Guest guest
, The V-Q scan is a ventilation-perfusion scan. I was new to it also. Aidan's pulmonologist ordered it! Basically it starts off with an injection with a radioactive isotope. Then they have him lay still for 30 mins and take 4 different angle scans. The radiation fills the part of the lungs that are used. They are also supposed to breathe in a gas of some sort to help with the scan, but Aidan was not required to. It gives the pulmonologist a good idea of the size of the lungs. So Aidan showed 33% of his left was in use and 67% of his right was in use. Basically he is using one full lung. =( It is an amazing scan for children with restrictive lung disease! I was impressed. Hope that answers it! =) To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Saturday, September 5, 2009 6:48:11 AMSubject: Re: V-Q scan I have never heard of a V-Q scan. What is it exactly? Guest guest
Thanks for clearing tha tup for me. Is the restrictive lung disease due to the scoliosis or is it a whole separate condition? What can they do to help improve his lung functioning? Guest guest
, The restrictive lung disease is a result of his scoliosis. He has randomly placed hemi-vertebras throughout his spine, so his spine has continued to collapse on itself. I dont know if the cast will work for him. Thats why I am looking into it. We are leaving tomorrow to see about possible VEPTR rods. Those will push his spine up and his chest outward. He is a dwarf so everything is really small. We are looking at all options right now. Their fear is if he is casted then his chest may not expand because of his syndrome. But we are looking at all options. How are your little ones??? I am new so I dont know your story but would love to hear about it!!! You are a strong mommy also!!! Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for getting me up to speed on your story. I am not new here, but I haven't been around in a while. The group has gotten so big that it gets to be difficult to keep up with the number of emails! Ian was diagnosed at 6 month of age with infantile scoliosis which is idiopathic. That was when I first found this group. His curve eventually progressed to 43 degrees and that is when he was first casted up at Erie Shriners. He spent 2 years in body casts and one brace. His latest x-ray shows him at 7 degrees and he's been out of casts/brace for over a year and half. His older sister, Noelle, was just diagnosed with Juvenile scoliosis, so unfortunately, she is too old for the treatment that Ian had. We're trying to get an appt with Dr. Betz at the Philly Shriners to talk about casting and staples. He's booked out about 2 months, so I am supposed to call back on Tuesday to see if they can somehow fit them in before then (they are transferring Ian's case to Dr. B since both of his Erie doctors left Shriners). So, that is it in a nutshell. Looking forward to getting to know you more! Guest guest
Interesting.... Noelle never had that scan, but she is showing a preference for using her left hand..... She would always prop up on her right hand on the floor to keep herself from falling over as she played with her left hand. Not sure if she would have been left-handed otherwise. Guest guest
, I BRIEFLY heard this term while in the hospital with my son when he was having brain surgery. His pulse ox and resp levels were low and they were afraid it was due to his scoliosis. Plus he snores badly and i told them that was normal for him but they think its due to his scoliosis. They think its bad enough that his lungs may be compromised espically after surgery. Thay did a chest xray and said his lungs were "fuzzy" and they monitored him and thought about doing the lung compacity test but decided not to. They snoring of course did not stop but they think it is due to his scoli and that he may have lung issues very soon if we dont take care of it quickly. They want him elevated while he sleeps not just to keep swelling down on the brain from surgery but also for his lungs as they were worried about sleep apnea. he does get his 1st cast by the grace of God on Sept 29th. I am terribly afraid of what his curvature is now. He has at 46 degrees on JUly 8th and he as been running 10 degrees a month worse on average so im scared he in the 60's or 70's now. He is having a hard time sitting w/o falling over to one side because the curve has gotten so bad and he did not used to be like this. Im scared for him. Please say a prayer his lungs are not comprimised and we get him casted soon enough to avoid surgery! Guest guest
, Haydens curve is over 60 degrees and his lungs are not compromised. He has had ct scan on his lungs and has had surgeries and never had breathing issues. So don't worry, I am sure his lungs are ok. Ask your Doc at ish Rite next time. That is one of the questions I ask EVERY time we go to ish Rite, "are his internal organs at all affected?", and the answer I always get is NO. So don't worry. Guest guest
, You should seriously look into the V-Q scan... it gave a very clear picture of his lung activity and a much more indepth idea of the capicity of his lungs. I agree with Joan.. always ask about the other organs. The spine effects everything. My son has restricted lung disease and also horrible acid reflux due to his curvature. He also progressed that quickly. I would suggest having a brace made just to be used to slow the curvature of his spine's progression until you have him casted. My son has had no choice but surgery but he was progressing so fast that we had a brace made to slow the progression(it wont stop it of course). He wore it 14 hours a day. It helped immensly. I cannot imagine what he would have been had we not gotten it! Just an idea!! I will without a doubt keep your little one in my prayers!!! *Huge HUG* =) ......ps keep us all posted on him... but definitely look at a v-q scan To: infantile_scoliosis@...Sent: Monday, September 7, 2009 8:44:31 AMSubject: Re: V-Q scan Joan, Thanks. Guest guest
, Thanks for the advice. Isaiah is actually getting a cast on the 29th of this month. I wish we didnt have to wait so long but we had no choice. I will ask his doctor about his lungs and other organs but i dont think they would cast him if his lungs were comprimised, but i dont know that for a fact. Im just glad we are getting him in a cast soon! Im glad to hear your sons lung function wasnt as bad as you thought. Thats great news! And of course you are welcome to this group anytime you need us! Good luck to you, From: <amanda_foster28@ yahoo.com>Subject: Re: [infantile_scoliosi s] V-Q scanTo: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Sunday, September 6, 2009, 2:17 AM , The V-Q scan is a ventilation- perfusion scan. =) From: poohlvr <poohlvr1020@ yahoo.com>To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comSent: Saturday, September 5, 2009 6:48:11 AMSubject: Re: [infantile_scoliosi s] V-Q scan I have never heard of a V-Q scan. Perkins
