It gives alot of hope to a "newbie' like me and mine about to start this journey along with all of you. I am very thankful to this site and everyone on it for all the support and valuable info you all provide!! Blessings, Subject: Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 7:08 PM Hi everyone! We had our 3rd casting day today and Bex is safely in cast three, down from 61 to 25 degrees! SLC is amazing, as in all of our experiences with them, Angie, Mike P., all of the nurses and the Dr. we just love and admire. We got down from 61 to 25 degrees in just 5 months of casting. We're very happy and someone who is key on his medical team said we are kicking the c--p out of this curve!!! He said we are going to beat this. He may be in a brace by summer, so maybe 4 or 5 more casts, but without this early cure, there is NO question his future would be looking very different right now. The doc said as much and we know it. We feel like the luckiest parents on Earth to have found ISOP, , Shriners and Mehta casting. We also had the pleasure of meeting Beth R. and her family from CAST on their first casting day. xxoo- Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2+ years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25!!!) Guest guest
, Thank you, you are so sweet! I do have to say that I don't look at a 4 degree correction as staying right around the same number. I admit I would have been bummed if we got no correction at all in cast 2, but it would still mean he was not progressing dangerously, as he certainly would be without the cast. If we get 4 degrees in each of the next 5 casts, he'll be moved to a brace by Summer! For us, since we started at over 60 degrees, to get to 10 or 15 as an end point would have us shouting from the rooftops with joy. That would mean a totally normal life for Bex, with no surgery, and we as parents would feel like we won the gold, not the silver. And the silver's pretty great, too. xo-Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25) From: NIck Guthe <nickgutheyahoo (DOT) com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 8:08 PM Hi everyone! Guest guest
Hi Patty, thank you! At SLC they only take the X-ray in cast (after the first casting day, where they do a standing X-ray out of cast, before the first one is put on). I've heard that a curve under 35 does not ever require surgery- if I'm right about that- so a 30 that holds sounds like a success to me!Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25) Subject: Re: Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Wednesday, July 22, 2009, 6:59 AM Heidi, That is great news! Is the 25 without the cast? Your story gives me hope because the doctor said he was hoping to get Isabella down to 30 since she was curved at 64 and at the end of that timeline that they like. For some reason I thought he was already at that number and that's why I said around the same number. I apologize since I didn't realize it was 4 and that's HUGE. Anyways, just wanted to say sorry. Guest guest
Hey, nothing wrong with looking ahead! I guess it depends on the patient. But it's my understanding that per Mehta's research 6-12 months is the recommended length of time. Our doc originally told us that we'd brace Noah anywhere from 6-12 months after the last cast. When it was determined that Noah wouldn't receive any more correction by casting we were at 14* and 9* in brace. Our doc then determined at that point we'd be bracing him for the full 12 months (which meant 4 braces.) He said anything under 10* is no longer diagnoised as scoliosis and that if he remained at 9* the rest of his life that was perfectly fine. He said "the goal is not necessarily 0. The goal is to stop the progression." That was eye-opening to me : ) We did 2 braces in SLC and then planned on "finishing up" here in Mpls. Of course that didn't go as planned. Noah went from 9* to 17* in 3 months in his first Mpls brace. We've got him back on track now so to speak. But we are bracing much longer than we anticipated. It will be 2+ years instead of 1. It's ok though. Adding an unexpected year of bracing is much better than our first diagnosis by a local doc who told us that Noah would wear a brace his entire childhood and need surgery in adolescense if not sooner.~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on month 18 of bracingAnd Mariella 6 months old currently waiting and watching at 11* To: infantile_scoliosis From: nickguthe@...Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 19:08:42 -0700Subject: RE: Slow and steady WILL win this race! Guest guest
Tasha, Exactly. I also totally understand about the difficulties of getting them to wear their brace. Noah was litterally yelling at me and the orthotist this time when he was being molded. He kept saying "I don't want anymore braces!" He has never reacted like this before. It was so hard! It was even harder because he was being molded immediately after I just found out about Mari. I can't believe that I didn't just start balling then and there! I thought it would get easier as he got older (since at this point he has no memory of not having something on his back)...but instead it has gotten harder. I'm so glad that I have you and other parents that understand what I'm going through. ~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on month 18 of bracingAnd Mariella 6 months old currently waiting and watching at 11* To: infantile_scoliosis From: ryanswalk@...Date: Thu, 23 Jul 2009 07:18:25 -0700Subject: RE: Slow and steady WILL win this race! ,I feel the same way! Guest guest
Hi , Thank you. You know, I don't know why it's taken me by surprise, but I feel a little post cast letdown or sadness. I know other parents here have told me they experience that, too. I think it's just such a build-up each time, making the travel plans, packing, hoping and praying he doesn't get sick before the cast is on, it's all kind of exciting, yet emotionally fraught. Even though Nick and I joke that we are old hat at this, each casting trip is it's own unique experience. It does get easier, because you mostly know what to expect, but this morning, I just felt like crying! Bexon is doing great, but he does have some new cast sores/rubbing scabs on his hips today. I guess it's like a new pair of shoes, your body adjusts. It's intimidating to think of the WHOLE road, including a year or more of bracing after the casting process is done. I know I should just take it one step at a time. I'm no less grateful or happy we found this treatment, just feeling sensitive today.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25) From: NIck Guthe <nickgutheyahoo (DOT) com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 8:08 PM Hi everyone! Guest guest
Someone else may have a better answer than me, but I feel the SLC team is very experienced, our doc there was the first doc in the U.S. to be trained in Mehta's method. I believe he has done the most casts of any doctor in the U.S. at this point. I could be wrong about that, but I was told they do 100 or more castings per year there. I'm sure they can see improvement with the naked eye, as my husband and I both could see the difference "out of cast" in our son's curve. It was a clear improvement from the last cast change. They leave him out of cast for a day for his skin to get a break, and we take pictures each time to document it for ourselves. The question about how they know when to go to a brace- good question! Anyone? Does SLC take an out of cast X-ray before switching to a brace? Guest guest
Heidi, Since our kids started with a high curve and an 'advanced' age, the journey will be longer for us. But I have got to say that for me, life in the brace is so much easier than the cast. Yes, the first few days are scary when you try to get the brace on and you are worried that you haven't done it right, but like the cast, it becomes routine. Except for Keira have wetting issues in the brace at night, everything else is a go. Keira is potty trained, so that makes it much easier, it would be hard to diaper in the brace, since it comes down farther and is on skin tight. You might want to try to potty train Bexon before the brace, but I know boys can be harder (especially when they are the 1st child.)Most people don't even notice Keira has it on. Since she went from the cast to the brace, I think she just expects to wear it, she has never once complained about the brace or asked to take it off. (Except for the one time a "burr" got on her t-shirt in the laundry and was sticking her.....)I guess what I am trying to say is, don't look too far into the future. In some ways with our kids being older the journey can be a little easier. Right now I am getting into a funk, since Keira will go back into a cast on Aug 26th, we haven't told her yet. The not being able to swim will be hard for her, she swims for 2 hours everyday.Liz, Mom to Keira - 3yrs, in 1st brace after 4 casts in SLC From: NIck Guthe <nickgutheyahoo (DOT) com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 8:08 PM Hi everyone! Guest guest
Heidi,You are right......you are at one of the BEST hospitals that treats Infantile Scoliosis with casting.Brace questions----these are my opinions and views through what we have learn with .I would insist on an Xray prior to going into a brace. If not, how else do you know where you are beginning. Surely SLC does one prior to bracing. As far as when to start bracing......with casting was not giving him anymore correction and his age I do believe had something to do with it. He was 28 months old when he got his last cast. Although I feel 1 or 2 more casts would have improved his curve, I am so thankful he is in a brace. I also feel his doctor knew the brace would help correct or if nothing else hold his small curve.I think the smaller the curve, the more likely it is that a brace can correct it.All this being said, we all know every child is different. And given a certain circumstance you as a parent will feel different about the situation.TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.html--- Subject: Re: Re: Slow and steady WILL win this race! To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, July 23, 2009, 3:46 PM Someone else may have a better answer than me, but I feel the SLC team is very experienced, our doc there was the first doc in the U.S. to be trained in Mehta's method.
Thanks Heidi, I am just trying to wrap my mind around the whole thing. We have been casting for over two years now. It is frustrating because started at "only" 30 degrees and we can't seem to get more than a few degrees here, a few there. At some point you just have to accept we have gotten all the correction in cast we will get and try a brace, but I am a big scardy cat! I hate all the xrays and focus on the numbers. His back does look so much better. The last time we went for the cast (emergency cast due to breaking it) my husband was on a business trip so my mom went with me. It was the first time in two years she had seen with out a cast. She cried and said, "Oh my... it looks perfect." I hope you didn't interpret my question as in any way trying to question all the good they do in slc. The fact that they don't put so much on the out of cast xrays gives me hope. I wish I could get away from all the out of cast xrays. Thanks again for your response, Jill PS I always battle the post cast blues- no matter how hard I try. It is something no one else in the world (except us parents of casting kids) can understand. Go with it my friend. Cry if you need to. Have an extra glass of wine or piece of chocolate or scoop of ice cream. Little Bex will bring you out of your funk. His smile and laugh will lift your spirits like nothing else in the world can!!! Hang in there. Guest guest
Heidi, First off....I feel for you so much and for ALL of the parents/kids that have had to endure much more than me and Jack. I do understand the post -cast blues, pre- cast jitters and all the rest of the emotional aspect to all of this. It is not easy, but you are doing the very best that you can. Bex is a little doll and he is doing soooo well with the cast on, he will bring you out of the funk. Jack would do it for me with a smile and a giggle as he ran through the house with a new cast on and I would say "OK keep going, we can do it!!" But take this time as just be, as someone mentioned have a glass of wine (or a beer for me PLEASE, I am soo craving a cold beer in this weather!), cookie, cake or all if the above! YOU are strong and you have a great support system in Nick. You just hang in Hon. ~KristaJack's Mom, Jack is 23 months old, in his 1st braceJack started casting at 41 degrees and is now measuring 0!!!
