I am sad to report that the Academy has passed the following resolution regarding supporting policies to provide coverage for family planning drugs. See below:

RESOLVED: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) support policies and

legislation that would require public and private insurance plans to provide coverage for

family planning drugs and supplies that are FDA approved, including those for sale over the-counter.

We are now discussing the following resolution - unrelated to NFP issues, but perhaps of interest to some of you:

RESOLVED, That the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) support full civil marriage quality for same-gender families to contribute to overall health and longevity, improved family stability and to benefit children of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, 1 Transgender (GLBT) families. The reference committee has come out with their recommendations and I believe we have made some positive progress. Specifically, the reference committee has recommended adoption of the following substitute resolution:

RECOMMENDATION: The reference committee recommends that Substitute Resolution No.

25 607 which reads as follows be adopted in lieu of Resolution No. 607:

27 RESOLVED, That the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) AAFP solicit and

28 support the development of updated CME programs and patient information resources on

29 evidenced-based reproductive health topics, including natural family planning methods,

32 RESOLVED, That the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) include natural family 33 planning methods’ counseling as a core skill in the Recommended Curriculum Guidelines for 34 Family Medicine Residents: Maternity and Gynecologic Care, AAFP Reprint 261. 35

While it is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction. However, we still have one more hurdle. The resolution will need to be passed by the AAFP Congress of DElegates this afternoon. Therefore, I ask for your continued prayers in this regard. Specifically, I will pray that it does NOT get withdrawn from the consent calendar for further debate, but rather gets passed as is. If this does get passed it will most likely be referred to the AAFP Commission on Education, where we do have supporters. Then it will be incumbent upon us to translate this resolution into reality by developing and offering CME and working with residency programs to train residents on how to counsel patients about natural family planning

Good work! Be sure of my prayers for the reference committee. It seems odd that one even has to fight this battle, when NFP has been recognized as a legitimate method in both domestic and foreign government appropriations since the 80’s. .

I provided my testimony this afternoon and was grateful there were others who also spoke out in support of it as well. Of course, there were those opposed to it citing the supposed lack of effectiveness and the fact that this should not be required for residents. Therefore, for those of you of faith, please continue your prayers that the reference committee recommend passage of the resolution by the Congress.

I just introduced the resolution to promote education about fertility awareness methods at the opening session of the Congress of Delegates. It required a 2/3rds vote to EVEN be considered by the Congess and it barely passed! Thankfully, though it did, so now I will be able to present testimony at the reference committee. However, this morning's vote reaffirmed that this is not going to be easy; therefore, I appreciate your support, especially this afternoon, between 1 and 4pm when I will be giving testimony. While this resolution is not very controversial, there are a number of other resolution coming forward that make me realize this may not be a very open community to this information. For example, two resolutions seek to make FDA approved forms of oral contraceptives that are available over the counter, be made available for free without a prescription. Another is resolves that all community health centers should be required to provide all FDA approved forms of contraception. Hopefully, I will have the courage to speak out about the potential harms of such actions, which is why I am asking for your support.Thanks in advance,Marguerite Duane
