Guest guest
Muscle spasms and headaches are likely from low potassium rather than low iron. I'm pretty certain that some folks here have to continue taking potassium supplements (prescription, not the OTC vitamin-aisle kind) while on spiro - I only took spiro for a short time but my K dropped down to 2.5 within a couple days of starting it and stopping the K supplements, so back on the K tabs I went. FWIW, since my adrenalectomy 5 weeks ago I have not had a single headache or muscle spasm. My K has been steady at 4.5 - higher than it ever was while on the supplements. Pre-adrenalectomy, my most intolerable symptoms were muscle spasms and headaches! -msmith1928 Nulliparous female, 46, 5'3 " , 115 lbs, CT showed 1cm left adrenal nodule, AVS determined disease is unilateral, had left laparoscopic adrenalectomy on 10/13/2011. Low sodium, fructose- and grain-free diet due to hereditary fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance (probable celiac). > > I am on low salt diet and walk 30 min. - 1 hr a day. But somedays I feel horrible and feel lke I can't function. I was wondering what role iron plays in bp b/c I was tol I'm slightly anemic. Feel tired alot and have muscle spasms and headaches.... does spiro help with these symptoms?
Guest guest
Are you saying that blood test if done right may not still show you are low on K? If so them this would explain why many have Sx of low K but blood show K is normal. > > > > > > Subject: RE: Re: muscle spasms and headaches > > To: hyperaldosteronism > > Date: Friday, November 18, 2011, 9:39 AM > > > > > > > > I am thinking maybe my potassium is low b/c I've had my potassium > > drop to 2.5 and I remember all the symptoms and now feeling the same > > way, this started couple days after spiro and I don't have blood > > work done until Monday... > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
High and low K (potassium) can have some of the same SX. > > > > > Yes the dr told me to stop potassium b/c spiro is potassium sparing > > > but from what I read is not always the case. Guest guest
As I recall, low K is reported in ~30% of the people with PA. This is why many cases are missed because it used to be looked for as part of the DX. My math tells me that ~70% of the people with PA will have normal or high K. As one whose K runs on the high end of the scale (4.8 - 5.0) we do bi-weekly blood test when I am changing meds or dosage. - 65 yo super ob. male - 12mm X 13mm rt. a.adnoma with previous rt. flank pain.
