The FAMILY Planning selective (FAMILY = Fertility Awareness Methods In the

Learning Years) seeks to educate medical students about the basic principles of

fertility awareness methods of family planning and the supporting science behind

their medical applications. Over the past 40 years, significant innovations

have been made in women's health care, particularly within the realm of

reproductive science. Parallel to these advances, natural methods for

monitoring fertility have been standardized and refined. This has led to more

effective tracking of a women's cycle and the times of fertility. These can be

used to achieve or postpone pregnancy, as well as to diagnose some gynecologic

problems. In addition to enlightening students about various fertility

awareness methods and their applications in health and disease, our goal is to

help promote fertility awareness methods as effective, relationship-centered

reproductive health care for motivated women and couples and to foster respect

and support for clinicians and users of fertility awareness methods. For

students interested in learning to chart their cycles, there are associated

costs for materials and individual follow-up sessions. However, this is not

required for successful completion of the selective.
