Guest guest
Hi Sherri- Thanks for the note. It made me feel a lot better. Like I said before, I'm sure every one of us had some very emotional encounters with insensitive people. It's truly unbelievable what comes out of some peoples mouths. My mom always said, think before you speak and I'm sure these people don't! Take care. Donna and (1/4/99)

Guest guest
Sherri: I was annoyed by the RNP and doctor, too. The RNP had never heard of helmet therapy and the doctor was saying it was a " new " thing. My response to them was " yes I know her head is flat, we get a helmet on Friday " (which we did). They were annoyed that I was defensive, but I was annoyed that being medical professionals they could have been much more diplomatic. Thanks for the message. in Fountain Valley, CA

I'd also prefer to pass on the judgement of how I could have avoided the whole thing. I TRIED positioning but it never worked with us. Anyways, just wanted to comment on your e - mail. Guest guest
Donna: Your welcome! You're right, plenty of people don't think before they speak. A funny story: A friend of mine had her new born daughter and 3 year old daughter with her at a restaurant the other day, a women approached her to look at the baby and said, " She's beautiful, she didn't get your nose, did she? " Then she said, " I know what it's like, I have a big nose too. " Can you believe it? That women was telling my friend in a round about way she has a big nose. The nerve of people! My friend couldn't stop talking about that for 3 days....we laugh about it. My point is that it makes some difference that our children are wearing bands and helmets that we get weird comments, but people say rude things anyway....Just a thought. Take Care. Guest guest
One question I have about the stares and questions is, if I see someone looking at my son, if I should make a statement about his helmet. Most people we run into at playgrounds or outings just look. Usually if there are any comments made it is from children. For instance, one of the activities we do with my moms support group is meet at a nursing home the first Friday of the month and pass out flowers donated by a local florist to the residents. It's really nice for the kids and the residents love it. We went today for the first time since my son has been wearing his helmet. I could see questions on many of the residents and staff's faces but they didn't ask any questions. I often wonder if I should just explain he has plagiocephaly and the helmet is to help his head round out. After the nursing home we met up at a playground and I could see questions in many of the parents faces but the only comments came from children. What do you do? - NH
Guest guest
: I know what you mean about looking at the babies heads. I saw a women about a week ago with a baby girl in the mall. She was holding her so I could see the back of her head. She had severe mishaping in the back. My heart was telling me to go to her and ask her if she has had the baby checked out for plagio, or cs, but my mind was telling me that I don't like it when others tell me what I should do...so I let it go. I just didn't want that darling little girl to grow up with a mishaped head. It's not my place, but I was thinking of her. Sherri
Guest guest
: Sometimes even the medical proffesionals have no cooth. Of course you laid her on her back, these days it's back-to-sleep. Have they missed something in their education? It's obvious that we all lay our babies on their backs, most of them have related problems (like Torticollis) that has caused the whole thing to begin with. I wish I could think of something really good to say to these people. Take Care Sherri
Guest guest
This is exactly how I feel. I would much prefer people ask me questions rather than them standing there pretending like they don't see anything. I can only imagine what they are explaining to themselves in their heads! At the same time, I don't want to just pipe up and announce that my kid's head is deformed! What to do? kendra & Masse wrote: One question I have about the stares and questions is, if I see someone looking at my son, if I should make a statement about his helmet. Guest guest
I didn't know how I'd react to the looks and questions -- I debated whether to make up a little card, explaining the purpose of the band, but haven't really had the time, and I find -- SO far, (week 4)is that a lot of people look, but not many people say much. Instead of getting flustered, or upset with them, I try to look them in the eye and smile, possibly opening the door to further communication if they want. Most want, but don't ask. And at this time, I'm not offering unless they say something first. Sure, we've had questions about seizures, and accidents, and yes, I know there is a potential tactless rude comment lurking out there in the general public somewhere....however, I feel comfortable with this therapy, and hope that I can handle that hurdle with education and lightheartedness if it comes to it.... Guest guest
Amy: We have a 4 1/2 yr old girl, a 22 month old girl and 10 1/2 month old twin boys. Only one boy, , is wearing the DOC band. He was on the bottom inutero and due to other severe complications (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome) he was stuck there for a long time, then born 2 1/2 months early and had a 6 week NICU stay. He had tort and plagio. The band has done a wonderful job so far. Sorry for the confusing message. Guest guest
, A funny thing we have noticed with older people is that they, in our experience, tend to think that it's for protection against normal childhood bumps and bruises. We get comments like " I wish my son could have had one of those, he was always bumping his head on the coffee table.....
