I would stay with the smaller until you see how it goes. Less to tuck up and under the cast. I might have Poise pads on hand just in case. You may even try the store brand. I buy lots of Target brand stuff, including pull-ups right now and I am pretty happy with the store brand. It's a little cheaper. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.html--- Subject: Cast shoppingTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, September 10, 2009, 9:14 AM

Hello all,

Ok so cast date is looming closer and closer and i been thinking of things i need to buy before we get our 1st cast. So far i have "plastics" like kushies. what else do i need to have on hand? About our only store choices will be Walmart or Target to shop at so if you can think of items i can get there that would help. Also, Isaiah is right between diaper sizes 3 and 4. Would it be best to go with the smaller diaper or the larger diaper. i dont know if one would fit up the cast better than the other or prevent leaks better, etc.

Any help with this would be a big help! Im literally writing things down so please help me with my list!

Thanks,

Smaller diaper. And generic Poise pads if you plan to use those- for grown ladies with pee leaks, that kind...we use maximum absorption...store generic brand from the drugstore or grocery store...sounds like Isaiah is too big for the small Kushies...just to clarify, they were to go over the diaper at night, not to touch his skin.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)Subject: Cast shoppingTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, September 10, 2009, 7:14 AM

Also, what about clothes? He wears 12 months right now, mostly onesies. Will he be able to still wear onesies if i go up a few sizes, and if so about how many sizes do i go up? I was told pants are hard to keep on them but that overalls are a good idea. (thanks Jenn) Im just so unsure what to buy but i know everything i have for winter is too small from last year and im not sure what to buy for this year. Any advice?

He weighs 22 lbs now but hes pretty tall so hes fairly thin....

We went from 12 months to 18-24 months in short and long sleeved t-shirts and stayed the same size in pants- elastic waistbands work great, they go either under or over the cast. Onsies would probably go up a size, I found always snapping them a pain. I bought soft things, like stretchy cotton, for maximum comfort. It doesn't hurt to have snaps at the neck or wider necks, too, you don't want to struggle to get it over their head with the first cast on...I'll send those Kushies!Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Hi ,

We are also on our first cast. My son is really small, he weighs only 18lbs (13 months), but he is average length, so like yours he is tall and skinny. He was wearing 12 months clothes before (because of the length, but they were wide on him). Pants he was still on 9 months.

After the cast, 12 month pants fit now (the cast added waist, maybe they are short but we had that problem before anyway). For tops, most of the 12 month clothes are tight, I'm moving up to 18 months.

I prefer onesies now, because it keeps things in place. Also, pants don't "stick" to the cast so they are all over. I go with onesies all the time.

You will probably like tops that cover his shoulders (if the cast is over the shoulder). They prevent the neck from getting sore if it's rubbing against cast all the time.

I hope I made some sense :-) That's all I can think about now...

You make perfect sense! I have the same problem too with pants, he looks like hes wearing capris half the time because they are too short but if i go a larger size they wont stay up! I love onesies too because they keep from riding up like shirts do. I hope they make them 18 and 24 months sizes, i think they do just might have to look a little harder. I hope i can find some long sleeve onesies since were moving back to KS where we have to deal with winter months again. (were in Tx now) If you have a store in mind that sell alot of long sleeve onesies 18 and 24 months let me know!

Thanks,

I think they make less onesies in those sizes. All I've found in tops are shirts now! I found one 18month (long sleeve) onesie in Sears last week, but only bought one b/c I hadn't realized how hard they were to find.

The ones I find the most are the ones that "expand" in the shoulders, not sure if you know what I mean. They are great but in our case they let the cast out so it rubs against his neck. Although you never know. Heidi seems to like wider necks, so you will have to see how it goes.

I would say don't buy a lot now until you see how it goes. The shoulder straps could be closer to the neck (like in my son's case) or further away.

I'm in Canada, so I understand your concern with the cold :-)

Please let me know if you find them anywhere, although we might not have the same stores here.

They do make 24mths oneies, but are usually picked over. I bought them specifically for in his cast to keep pants up. They worked OK. I always found them at Walmart. All I ever found were the short sleeve. I think I liked wider necks or snaps at the neck at first because Bex has a big head for his skinny body, genuis brain obv., and he hated when I struggled to get shirts over his head with the first cast on. If the neck is too wide, like really wide, it can show more of the cast...depends if you care or not. Krista ofen had Jack in just his cast with no t over it because of the heat (there was a t under it), and I thought that was great, she was not embarrassed at all.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

The best winter long sleeved t-shirt we ever found were at Gymboree on the sale rack, with snaps at the neck. Some of them have small holes in them from a staple in the cast, but , I can send them to you, they still look pretty good and you could sew or patch the very small hole. Unfortunately, I could only find one small Kushie! I'll send it so you can try it/see if it's the right size...you can wash it every day if needed...Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Heidi,

Thats so funny! We require the bigger neck shirts because Isaiah has a huge head!! Hes like 97%tile for head size. And then this little body. Its a family thing, on his DAD'S side!!! LOL! In the summer i would just let him go shirtless as well. I dont mind and would rather people ask me about it than to stare at my son in a shirt who looks like he has taken steroids or something and became the incredible hulk!! LOL!

BTW when we were in the hospital for Isaiah's brain surgery they put him on steroids to make the swelling in his brain go down and my hubby who has no medical knowledge thought they meant "steroids" like metabolic steroids and he was afraid he would get muscular. He even googled it he was so worried about it and wouldnt believe me when i told him it was a different type of steroid. Imagine my embarressment when he asked the NS about it.....

I'll send them. I think they're 18-24 months. Re: steroids...Bex is so skinny, but with the cast he's bulkier...it's looks like he has a thicker neck and tense shoulders under his shirt, one a little higher then the other. Still, most people don't even seem to notice it when he has a shirt on. I llike Weleda Baby calendula cream. The cream, not the lotion and not the diaper rash cream. It smells really nice to me, it's a well respected company, and Dr. Mehta recommends Calendula cream for the skin if there is some minor rubbing from the cast edges. You can buy it at Target or online or at certain health foods stores. It's about 10-11 dollars but it lasts a long time, you don't have to use much. You might find something less expensive, calendula is known to be soothing and healing.

We also rub it on him after a cast change bath, all over where the cast was, so his skin can absorb it overnight before the new cast is put on.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Hi ,

It helped us to go up a size in diapers.... I would bring some of both sizes so you can test them out. We also use Poise pads in Noelle's diapers which work very well. For redness, you can use calendula cream or Aquaphor. The calendula was a little irritating to Noelle, so we use the Aquaphor, but I know a lot of families use the other cream very successfully. Noelle is just really fair. Ask at the hospital for extra mole skin if you don't have any in case you have a diaper leak, etc. and you need to re-petal the cast. You may consider bringing Mylicon in case he's gassy after the casting. And of course, some fave lovies and snacks, DVDs and loose comfy clothes! Good luck! - Noelle's mommy, 2 1/2 years old and in 8th cast from Rochester NY, reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III

,Out of cast , Isabella was 24 pounds and was wearing 18 to 24 month tops and 18 month pants and 24 month shorts. After casting, we went up to a 3T top (24 month onesies) and stayed the same size in bottoms but I've only been using elastic waisted pants.. Patty, mom of Isabella, 2 years old, in 1st cast (Rochester) & mom to & EvanTo: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 12:36:06 PMSubject: Re: Cast shopping

I found the 18 and 24 month onesies at Babies r Us (so toys r us should have them too).  They were sold on a hanger as a set of 5. Patty, mom of Isabella, 2 years old, in 1st cast (Rochester) & mom to & EvanTo: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 1:25:29

,

Please let me know if you find them anywhere, although we might not have the same stores here.

,

You make perfect sense!  I have the same problem too with pants, he looks like hes wearing capris half the time because they are too short but if i go a larger size they wont stay up!  I love onesies too because they keep from riding up like shirts do.  I hope they make them 18 and 24 months sizes, i think they do just might have to look a little harder.  I hope i can find some long sleeve onesies since were moving back to KS where we have to deal with winter months again.  (were in Tx now)  If you have a store in mind that sell alot of long sleeve onesies 18 and 24 months let me know!

Thanks,

melissa

Oh I'm so sorry that I didn't explain that! LOL Moleskin is a soft type of adhesive material that they use to cushion the rough edges of the cast. You can buy it at a drug store in small quantities.... like CVS, Rite-Aid, etc., but it's best to just get a whole canister of it at a medical supply store. Petaling is just a name for rebandaging the the edges of the cast. Let me know if that makes sense! - Noelle's mommy, 2 1/2 years old and in 8th cast from Rochester NY, reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III
