Guest guest
Traci, If you can remind me how old is Sydni and also, which titers were they running? I know the one for pneumovax is not run until a child is at least 2 years old. Maybe she is getting these types of infections in the sinus/ears/eyes. I don't know, it's just a thought. Good luck and I hope you find the answers you need on Monday. Guest guest
The Phys asst said to gradually allow her time to get used to it, then she should wear it for 23 hrs a day. We had it off today for a while but then I put her to bed with it on. Maybe I will try to loosen it for now if she wakes up and then gradually tighten it over the next few days, thats a good idea. They did tell me it needs to be tight otherwise, it wouldnt work correctly. I just feel so overwhelmed and I wish she could tell me if shes ok, but thats not possible since she only 8 mnths!!! They also said reflux is normal, they cut a belly out for her (it has elastic in front of it so I can loosen it after she eats). Anyways, I'm sure this is normal, a parent being worried. Was like that when he got casted? Did he cry or anything? Thanks Tasha, Melinda HELP!!To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Friday, October 2, 2009, 6:57 PM We were at Shriners today and Marly got her brace. Guest guest
When Noelle was first casted she dry heaved for 3 days until her body adjusted to the cast and then she was fine. She also has reflux and takes Prevacid for it..... It may just take a couple of days for her body to adjust, but if you have any apprehensions call your doc's service and see what he/she has to offer.... at the very least it may give you some peace of mind. hang in there and big hugs..... Guest guest
Hi Melinda,Grace wasn't as young as Marlycia when she got her first brace, she was almost 2 yrs old and her first brace was just a nighttime brace. But they said to start with 2 hours and work our way up to a full night. They said it would probably take about 2 weeks. For some reason Grace did really well, don't know whether it made her back feel better or what, but she never fought it until it started to get too small. That said the next brace she had, also just a nighttime brace, she always was fussy in it and fought us tooth and nail. Come to find out, the style of that brace wasn't working anymore, it was making her spine twist when she was in it. I'd go back to the brace clinic and have them look at it and see if there are any adjustments they could make to it. It may be that it isn't working for her either.Or, it may just be that she is having trouble adjusting. I agree with the suggestion of trying short periods and build up. Also, try looser and work up to the tightness. Afterall, even if they say it needs to be tight to work, having her upset and crying all the time and not being relaxed in the brace will give you the opposite outcome than what you're hoping to achieve.Hope that helps. JaneGrace, 3 yrs, in 4th brace, 1st cast next Wednesday. To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Friday, October 2, 2009 4:57:44 PMSubject: HELP!! We were at Shriners today and Marly got her brace. Guest guest
also had a brace at age 2. It does have to be tight to work. This is new to her and it is restricting her movements. Think about it,a baby is never really still. They are constantly in motion, so with a brace a good portion of her body is not able to move. Work up to the 23 hours. Don't try it all at once. She and you will get used to it. Guest guest
In our experience, the cast was by far more comfortable. Does yours have a cutout in the front to help with the stomach expanding when she eats? Ian's had a cut out in the front just like the cast, so we didn't have reflux issues or breathing problems, but it was still super hot and uncomfortable. She did great last night sleeping but still cannot stand it when shes awake. The reflux is only when she has the brace on, also her nose runs only when she has the brace on????!!!! Thats really weird, right? I'm sure its not normal. I'm trying to allow her to adjust to the brace but I feel like if I let her have it off alot then she'll never get used to it. This is harder thank I thought!!!! I'm gonna call the docs on Monday and find out why her nose runs only when the brace is on. Hope we can do this! Guest guest
Noelle was 18 months when she was first casted and her reflux was very active at that point.... When the cast was the first few days, she would pull at it and she hated how high up it came under her chin.... She used to sleep with her hand between the cast and her chin. We never had any issues with her nose running, though. But, as I said, the dry heaving subsided within 3 days and within 2 weeks she was a pro..... But it was a rough 2 weeks! I think the brace may be harder initially because you can take it off and with a cast there's no choice but to deal with it..... Guest guest
Tasha, So do you think he just had it because he was compensating for his back? We have been doing PT but it hasnt really helped but we had to stop once the chiari was found. I thought once he got the cast it would be better and so did the therapist but it is more noticable now so i guess we need to address it more than we were. Its sooo tight. She keeps crying, it looks like shes breathing heavy, she has terrible reflux. I dont know what to do, is she in pain? Can she breath? is the brace too tight? Shes only eight mnths old so I know shes has to get used to it but I cant help but think its crushing her!! They took xrays and they told me the doctor will call me next wk to discuss casting. Is the cast worse than the brace??? Please anyone w any advice, please help?
