Guest guest
Dear AllOn another topic, does anyone has “list” or suggestions for authentically (as close as possible) Catholic Ob/Gyn residencies? Or at least ones that will honor conscience rights? Blaise would appreciate the heads up and would also like to join the group. Thanks for all your suggestions in advance. You can send them to the group, or me at lruppersberger@... or Blaise at his email on the address bar. Thanks.Dr. Les Ruppersberger From: Blaise Milburn Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2012 10:56 PMTo: lruppersbergerSubject: NFP only residencies Dr. Ruppersberger, As someone interested in becoming an NFP-only OB/GYN, I was wondering if you knew of any NFP-only OB/GYN residencies or at least any NFP-sympathetic residencies around the country. Do you know of any program directors or doctors that might be able to point me in the right direction to which programs might be open to someone like me? Thanks for all of your help and for your witness to the truth. God Bless. In Christ, Blaise MilburnMS-III Washington University
Guest guest
Dr. Ruppersberger, One More Soul (www.omsoul.com) used to have an NFP residency directory, but I just visited the site and no longer see it there. Perhaps Steve Koob could tell us if they still have that database. It is, however, fairly out of date, as residents from recent application years have not updated it. I am currently a 3rd year resident at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, NY, where I came specifically because I felt it was the truest in the country to the Church's teachings and Directives. The trouble in residency programs is that even if you can get away from doing abortions (this is not too difficult, esp. in Catholic institutions) and tubals (a little more tricky, since some Catholic programs have rotations at sites outside of the hospitals where residents can perform tubals), then you have the contraception issue. Catholic hospitals don't deal with this in the postpartum population, but the resident clinic is the battleground. Either the clinic is structured to be " separate " from the hospital (I saw this in a Catholic hospital, where the clinic was located inside the hospital, but under a different name, so that they could prescribe OCPs), or attendings use the " therapeutic OCP " excuse to " treat " dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, etc, when really just giving birth control. I was able to find this program, where essentially none of that happens. Most of our attendings who work in the clinic are either practicing Catholics or respect the hospital's policy. And our program director, Dr. Pivarunas, has worked tirelessly to provide this " safe haven " atmosphere where Catholic residents can learn in a supportive faith environment. Am I biased? Yes! However, I would be willing to work with Blaise to compile a more updated list of NFP-compatible/friendly residencies, drawing from the experience of recent applicants and current residents. For now, I would also direct him to look at a couple of other programs: 1) St. 's Mercy, St. Louis, MO They currently have at least 2 NFP-only residents (a 2nd and 4th year), and although they have outpatient surgery centers that do tubals, and some issues with contraception in their clinic, it is an outstanding training program and familiar with NFP-only residents, they recently had 2 other women go through who also then went to the NaProTechnology Fellowship in Omaha with Dr. Hilgers 2) Methodist Hospital, Houston (combined with St. ph's) This is not in a Cathlic hospital primarily, but the director, Dr. Toy, was extremely supportive when I was candid with him in my interview. He told me that he would back me 100%, and make sure that no attending ever forced me to do something that was against my conscience. I would still worry about when you are on call, discharging postpartums who request OCPs...I don't know how this works out in the practical sense, but I also know that they have had several NFP-only residents, one who is currently at the NaPro fellowship and another who is a 3rd year. There may be more. There are other programs that currently have NFP-only residents. A current list is needed, and as I said, I would be willing to initiate contact with those people I know who have recently been through the interview process to help those who will be coming down the pipeline soon. Please feel free to put Blaise in contact with me at jaimeobst@.... I would welcome any contributions from other residents on this listserve, as well as any attendings who work in training programs across the country!
