Hi Melinda,

Yes, unfortuantely that's correct. Both of my kiddos have Infantile Scoliosis. Noah's scoliosis is Progressive. I'm still hoping Mari's resolves on it's own.

Noah is still struggling a bit, but overall has done very well. We started casting at 22 months old at 36* with severe rotation. He's currently 14* without any rotation. He's at 9* in his brace. The doc needs him to be below 10* for 6 months before he'll let him go into a night-time only brace.

If our little girls do end up having the progressive form - I truely believe that they are young enough that they'll be able to be fully corrected.

Let me know if I can be of any more help.~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on 1 1/2 years of bracingAnd Mariella 7 months old currently waiting and watching at 11*

Hi ,

I hope they are both ok and resolve on their own. I actually called Shriners and explained my situation that the pediatric ortho wants to to wait six months. They want to see Marlycia this Tues 9/15. She said this is the only appt they had and suggested I take it. So, I hope I can get more ifnfo from Dr Betz as the other doctor didnt really explain much, maybe so I didnt worry. He jsut said that there is 90% chance it will resolve on its own. We can only hope. Good luck to you and Mariella. I noticed below, do you have another child that has it as well?

Just found out... Hi, My name is Melinda and I am a married mother of two little girls, ages 21 months and 7 months. I had suspected something wasn't quite right about my youngest since she was a few weeks old. She always tilted to the right. I had mentioned this to her doctors a few times but they said it was probably just the way she preferred to be positioned, she'll grow out of it. Well, as she got older I noticed one side of her back was bigger than the other and again told her doctor. At that point, he sent me to a Pediatric Orthopedic in town, PA. He said this was to 'rule out' scoliosis. I was so scared, I froze. I didnt know anything about it, I didnt want to wait to find out, I didnt know what kind of questions to ask. They expected me to wait until the end of September. I told them no way. Well, to make a long story longer, I finally got an appointment on 8/28/09 and as I suspected, she was diagnosed with Infantile Scoliosis. I was and am devasted. The doctor just said this should correct itself, come back in six months and if it's getting worse, he'll send us to Shriners in Philadelphia, PA. Please, if anyone can give me any advise, I dont know what to do. The waiting game is no fun. My daughter is 7 1/2 mnths, she doesnt hold her own bottle, she wont sit up unassisted. I just want to have hope but find it so hard when I know nothing about this. Anyone with any advice would be great?! By the way, she has a 23 degree angle at this point, thats what I was told.

patty,

That's very refreshing. I hope it doesnt get as far as casting with my little one, but if it does then I hope that she runs and still enjoys the everday pleasures of life!

Wow. From what the ortho told me, IS only affects 1% of the poplulation. Do you know if this is correct? It just seems like, well, I thought I was alone when found out, and now I know there are so many other parents and children experiencing the same thing. So Mari is at 11 degrees? They say the odds are good for her then, right? Again, I'm new to this but can I ask, what is a rotation? You mentioned his was severe?

I don't know about the 1% of the poplulation statistic. Yes, Mari's odds are good. Up to 90% of all Infantile Scoliosis cases resolve on their own. However - not to be a negative Nelly...but her doc has only had 2 cases of 2 sibilings having Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis. 1 resolved and 1 progressed. So really I feel her odds are more 50/50 than 90/10. That dosen't apply to your daughter though, so keep thinking positive! : )

I'm not an expect, but I understand rotation to be the twisting of the spine. The spine twists and rotates and can push the ribs back. This is what causes the rib hump (or deformitiy) that you see or feel in their back. The docs can measure rotation, but mostly it doesn't seem like they do. They usually just describe it in terms, like "mild" "moderate" "severe" etc. I'd ask at your appt tomorrow "how does her rotation look?" The doc should be able to tell you.

Our Dr does not give us a rotation measurment either. He just told us there is significant rotation and you can clearly see that b/c of the hump. Hopefully his first cast next week will begin to correct that. Joanmom to Hayden 2 1/262 degreesTreated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

No, we go to Shriner's in Portland Oregon. I don't think anyone else on this group goes to our same Shriner's. So my "internet" support groups are my only support other than family. I don't have a date yet for Grace's cast. I know Dr. "D" is not in the office next week, 9/21-25, so it will be the next week at the earliest.

This is what causes the rib hump (or deformitiy) that you see or feel in their back. The docs can measure rotation, but mostly it doesn't seem like they do.

We go next Monday the 21st. I am feeling both. I am ready to start this long journey but am nervous as to what to expect. But this group has helped me prepare so much. I would be totally in the dark if I hadn't joined a few months ago. I just want Hayden to adjust to his cast quickly and easily. This is what causes the rib hump (or deformitiy) that you see or feel in their back. The docs can measure rotation, but mostly it doesn't seem like they do. They usually just describe it in terms, like "mild" "moderate" "severe" etc. I'd ask at your appt tomorrow "how does her rotation look?" Patty,

Yes- for the parents about to get the first cast- cast life is very do-able, the waiting and the first casting day/few weeks after are definitely the hardest part. Not that there won't be bumps along the emotional journey, but it just becomes life as you know it.

Us pro moms and dads have EARNED that hard one title!!!Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)
