Welcome Melinda, you truly came to the right place for support. I have been a part of this group since May/June and it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Just remember that some children with Infantile Scoliosis have self correction so that is a good thing, but if not, then you will learn in the next few days about MEHTA casting technique.Thank GOD for and Dr Mehta. Our kids can be casted and cured safely and gently. I am not one of the seasoned mom's here so I am sure some of them will post soon. Listen to them and read everything you can on this group site and ISOP. I am sure there are some parents here who go to PA Shriners. The waiting is the hardest part. We are still waiting to have our son's first cast in two weeks, but I am

prepared for it because of this group. Good luck and keep us posted on your daughters treatment. You did the right thing by urging your Doctor that there was something truly wrong. Good job. Joanmom to Hayden 2 1/262 degreesTreated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

Hi, My name is Melinda and I am a married mother of two little girls, ages 21 months and 7 months. I had suspected something wasn't quite right about my youngest since she was a few weeks old. She always tilted to the right. I had mentioned this to her doctors a few times but they said it was probably just the way she preferred to be positioned, she'll grow out of it. Well, as she got older I noticed one side of her back was bigger than the other and again told her doctor. At that point, he sent me to a Pediatric Orthopedic in town, PA. He said this was to 'rule out' scoliosis. I was so scared, I froze. I didnt know anything about it, I didnt want to wait to find out, I didnt know what kind of questions to ask. They expected me to wait until the end of September. I told them no way. Well, to make a long story longer, I finally got an appointment on 8/28/09 and as I suspected, she was diagnosed with Infantile Scoliosis. I was and am

devasted. The doctor just said this should correct itself, come back in six months and if it's getting worse, he'll send us to Shriners in Philadelphia, PA. Please, if anyone can give me any advise, I dont know what to do. The waiting game is no fun. My daughter is 7 1/2 mnths, she doesnt hold her own bottle, she wont sit up unassisted. I just want to have hope but find it so hard when I know nothing about this. Anyone with any advice would be great?! By the way, she has a 23 degree angle at this point, thats what I was told.

Hi, Melinda, welcome to CAST! So glad you found us.

The great news is that your daughter is very young and she may still self resolve. Around 90 percent of case of IS do self resolve. You are very smart and a great mom to be so on top of this, because if she does have progressive infantile scoliosis, you will have plenty of growing time, in the best window to begin Early Treatment EDF casting in the Mehta Method.

It is a non-surgical cure if the condition is caught and treated properly in time, by a Mehta trained doctor. 23 is not extremely high, but I would not wait six months to follow up to see if it is progressing. The reason is that some cases do reach higher numbers younger, it is a case by case situation and every child is unique. Casting docs usually need an MRI done to rule out other conditions before beginning casting, and those appointments are sometimes booked out months in advance. Before considering an MRI, you first would want to know if it is progressing with a follow up X-ray.

Don't panic, you are in the right place and you have plenty of time if your daughter does need treatment. Hopefully she will self resolve! We've all been there and I know it's scary, but you are doing great.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Hi Melinda,Welcome to CAST! SO happy you found us! Heidi and Joan have given you some good advice, but I also wanted to urge you to go to the FILES section here on the group and read an article. It is an article written by Dr. Metha on Early Treatment. In the FILES section it will be the first thing there. ***Growth as a corrective force in the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis***A must read if you are considering casting. Melinda,

Welcome!! So sorry to hear about your little girl but you are in the BEST place you could be at this stage in the game. You demanded answers when you knew someting was wrong, you got those xrays and you have a referral to a shriners hospital IF you need it. I pray that you dont. If it is progressive you have come to the BEST support group that ever existed! Like Joan said, read everything you can get your hands on here. I would recommend you read every post because sometimes the best info is tucked neatly inside! This is not only a support group but an informational forum, at least for me. I have learned more from the people on here than any doctor could ever begin to know or teach me.

My son was dx at 6mos and he is now 12 months and is getting his 1st cast this month. Had i found this group earlier i would have known what to do and what care to demand. You are doing a great job and seem to have everything in place. Good for you!! My son still will not hold his own bottle but i know he will get there as will your daughter. Please dont worry about that. She is young and will get there in her own time. All babies are different.

I would not wait 6 months for the next xray. I would demand it much sooner. My son progressed very fast and our waiting and watching has gotten us to 46 degrees plus! Please dont let it scare you, let it motivate you!

I will pray for the best for your daughter and again welcome and ask any and all questions. This great group has almost all the answers!!!

Hi Melinda,

My Noelle was just like that at birth.... I wouldn't wait 6 months either. I would send your child's medical information and copies of her x-rays tp both Philly Shriners and Rochester for second opinions. Once reviewed by the Mehta docs at Philly and Rochester, those docs may advise you to wait 3 months, which is reasonable for a second set of x-rays. They may also advise you to have an MRI done of the brain and spine, which is standard for our kiddos to rule out bony abnormalities and spinal cord issues. Feel free to contact me off-line if you have any specific questions about Rochester. Hang in there! - Noelle's mommy, 2 1/2 years old and in 8th cast from Rochester NY, reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III

I'm repeating some of the points, but from my limited experience,-experts prefer not to cast kids under 1 year (anesthesia concerns)-Odds are in your favor (I read 85%) -Odds are a little less favorable if the curve is greater than 20*, but radiologists seem to come up with different measurements all the time, so I still consider 23* to be good news. -If you choose to go the path of the Shriner hospitals, you can start the application process now, even if you are only using them as consultants. (I highly recommend utilizing them as consultants, even if you don't apply.)I would not wait more than 3 months for another x-ray. Now is the time to "nip this thing in the bud". You're ahead of the game- take advantage of time! Worst case, you get another x-ray in Nov, an MRI in January and have an appointment in March for casting. That's a whole year ahead of the suggested treatment time (2 yr) and right after when the doctors want to cast (1 yr). Your child might be in cast for only a couple months. And remember- there's an 85-90 chance it will correct- I would bet my house in Vegas if I had those odds! Out of all things that we hear about these days, we can face this head on: although, I hope neither of us has to!Oh yes, and is 6 months and doesn't sit up, hold her bottle, or anything near what the 'average' baby does.Good luck!'s mommy 6 months, "wait and see" phase- 19* Just found out...To: infantile_scoliosis Date: Wednesday, September 9, 2009, 1:22 AM

Melinda, Im sure somebody already said this, but i would reccommend you not waiting! Some kids will correct on their own, but there is that 10% that do not and their spines progress very fast! That is what happened to my child. At 6 months of age she was 25 degrees! We were also told to wait and see but for only 3 months. In that 3 months, her back progressed to 55! I couldnt imagine what 6 months would have done. We got her a brace, but 1 month in the brace, her back progressed to 74 degrees! Thats when we went to Shriners of Chicago and got her casted and are down to a 14! But the higher the curve, the harder to correct. Its best to take action right away! I would not wait! Shriners is the best place to go for INfantile Scoliosis, i would make and apt now! Good luck and i pray her scoliosis is not progressive!Shauna--- On

Great job on getting this detected and diagnosed early. That is the first important step. As many of the other parents have said, most cases of infantile scoliosis do resolve on their own. Did your doctor give tell you a Rib Vertebrae Angle Difference (RVAD) as well as the degree of curvature. The RVAD is often a good indicator for whether the scoliosis is likely to progress or not. My son was also diagnosed with infantile scoliosis at 7 months old. He was diagnosed with a 16 degree curve but it rapidly progressed to 31 degrees in about 3 months. We live in Florida but flew to the Shriners in Chicago to receive treatment from a doctor who was trained in the Dr. Mehta method of casting. My son was casted when he was a year old. He

wore casts for 8 months and then a brace for 6 months. He is almost 3 years old now and his spine is perfectly straight. We had an easier and shorter casting experience than a lot of members on this group, because we were fortunate enough to detect it early and get it treated early. I would definitely not wait 6 months for another x-ray. My recommendation would be to fill out the application for Shriners and set up an appt. with the Shriners in PA for 2-3 months from now. They can do another x-ray then and if your daughter does have progressive infantile scoliosis, she will be at a facility that has a good amount of experience with infantile scoliosis and a doctor that has been trained in the Mehta method of Early Treatment with casting.

Thanks. I thought six months was a little long to wait and see. I will be calling him back to schedule a sooner appointment. I know I should have hope that it will correct itself but sometimes, its hard. I look at it and feel it and it doesnt seem to be getting better, that could just be in my head though. I've read alot of the stories and alot of the parents said that their child's progressed quickly at young ages so I'm nervous if I dont catch it in time, they wont be able to help her. I'm so happy to be able to talk to others that have experienced the same thing. Thanks to all for any and all comments/help. Hoping for the best!

Yes, you are doing the right thing by not waiting too long. They watched and waited too long with my son and he is now at 62 degrees. He will finally be casted in less than 2 weeks, but it has been a long wait for us. But luckily we have a Mehta trained Doctor at ish Rite and he said we can hopefully get Hayden down close to 20, but he will never be zero. You should also read Heidi's son Bexons story, his progressed pretty quickly and he is now at a very low number (25 I believe) and only in his 3rd cast, so there is really a lot of hope and success stories. Don't worry. You are on the right track. Joanmom to Hayden 2 1/262 degreesTreated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

Melinda, mother of Marlycia, 7 months.

I didnt know most of these points except for the success rates of correcting itself is around 90% so its really good to hear. I am going to contact Shriners to see what the recommend. I and everyone else agrees six months is too long to wait. Feels great to talk to people about this!!

Melinda,

If you'd like to read a short version of my son Bexon's story so far, you can read it on the website www.breezymama.com under Crooked Love- there are a couple photos, too. It was put on the site a month or two back, but you can find it in older entries- click on the bottom of the home page back a few pages, or it might still be on the home page under most popular entries, double click on Crooked Love.

I think the suggestion to get into the Shriners system for an appointment 2-3 months from now, just in case, is a great one. My son got into his first cast at 61 degrees and 19 months- we wish we had known about this much sooner!Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Waiting is exactly what you do NOT want to do. I would get into Philly Shriners ASAP. I am not sure which docs head up the casting there (we were casted in Erie), but someone on here can let you know which doc you need to see.

What is the degree of curvature, RVAD, and have they done the MRI yet?

FYI, I went to school at Kutztown...not too far from town!

I kept telling my husband, I cant wait that long, she's too little. What if it gets out of control? So I plan on contacting Shriners in Philly to get some info and see what they can do for her. To be honest, the pediatric ortho didnt really explain much. All we know right know is her curve is at 23 degrees and I'm scared. Obviously, no one wants their child to be in any pain or even have a cold. They said there is no pain associated with it, is that true, does anyone know? I dont even know what RVAD is? And no MRI yet. From what others have said, Shriners will schedule that.

RVAD stands for Rib Vertebrae Angle Difference. It can be useful in determing how likely it is that the curve will progress with infantile scoliosis. I do not believe that scoliosis causes any pain unless it gets very severe. I have a 16 degree curve myself and I don't have any discomfort associated with it. I know it's scary, but odds are highly in your favor that this will resolve on it's own and if it doesn't, you have a very good chance of being able to completely correct it with the proper treatment.

Well, good to know but the doc didnt mention anything to me about RVAD so I'm

not sure. I really do hope this resolves on its own, any ideas how long it takes

if it was to resolve on its own?

Yes, pain absolutely can occur with severe scoliosis. We were told scoliosis causes no pain by our first ortho. He was very wrong. By the way, our child is not in any pain, because he is being saved by the cast...Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Hi Melinda,

I have a daughter who is also 7 months old. She was diagnoised at 6 months. Her doc will check for progression again 4 months from diagnosis. I believe this is a much more reasonable length of time then your doc's suggestion of 6 months.

I've attached a casting vs bracing vs surgery study that was done recently at the Philly Shriners.

I hope our precious little girls will resolve on their own, but if not - at least we are educated and on top of things.

Best of luck!~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on 1 1/2 years of bracingAnd Mariella 7 months old currently waiting and watching at 11*

Melinda,I agree that there probably isn't pain associated with it. I was and am devasted.
