After the Holy Father's address to the American bishops on Jan. 19 -- which amazingly anticipated so accurately the subsequent assaults on our Church here -- we can move beyond speaking broadly and somewhat abstractly about generic "religious freedom", and begin zeroing in on a more precise and accurate concern about the more particular issue (in Benedict's mind at least) of "...the grave threat to the Church's public moral witness presented by a radical secularism...". Notice that phrase: public moral witness.

If this gravely important aspect of a convincing public moral witness is given the short shrift when discussions about "conscience clauses" and the "rights of believers to practice their faith" come up, then religious liberty starts to be reduced, as perhaps mainly a concern for the immediate needs of believers to practice their faiths without external interference. But much more than this admittedly valid concern is needed. We believers are missionaries. What about the right to present convincingly in the public sphere our compelling vision of integrated man, and the social flourishing that flows from acceptance of that vision.

I salute you Fr. , and hope that, like you, more will begin to emphasizes this "public moral witness"
