Guest guest
Hi Vickie, My daughter was on and off clonidine for years. She only took it for bedtime to help her sleep , which it did, but we had to keep raising her dose. It would work for a few months than stop, so we ended up using other meds in between and than going back to the Clonidine. It never helped with any of my dd's tics, but I believe that is because she only took one dose a day, at bedtime.(2mg) I didn't find it useful for the OCD. She has been on Zoloft with it, and on it alone, and only the Zoloft seemed to help with the OCD symptoms. This is just my personal experience with this med. I have not taken him to a psychiatrist yet. The past week he is getting stuck turning circles and touching things. I can barely get him to move from one room to the next. I really want to up his Clonidine to 2 tablets, and see what happens. The question is for anyone that can help me and has been through this. Does anyone know if Clonidine will help with this OCD stuff, or from experience will he need some type therapy to help or possible another type medication. Any suggestions? We are not getting enough sleep either, It takes him a long time to get to bed with all the circle turning and touching things, walking back and forth. Guest guest
Thank you Judy, I have a feeling that my son may have to take something else along with Clonidine for the tics. Thank you for sharing!! Love, Vickie Subject: Re: tics and clonidine, need advice To: Date: Friday, January 9, 2009, 6:48 PM Hi Vickie, My daughter was on and off clonidine for years. Guest guest
Hi there. My son is 10 with tics and OCD/ADHD and he has used both Clonidine and Guanfacine (Tenex). We also don't know if the tics are the OCD or a Tourette's like problem OR the meds from the ADHD! We let my son decide about his tics (he scrunches his face like his nose itches, and straightens his arms our and rotates his wrists) since his " functioning " isn't really being affected. He wants the tics to be gone, but he also wants to NOT take that extra pill. We were giving the Clon. at night due to it helping him sleep as a nice side effect. He decided that he'd rather tic than take a pill. So, we started Melatonin at night and stopped the Clon. (all with the approval of the Psych). I tell you, I can barely sit next to him, he tics all the time! If ever I thought the tics weren't that bad or that the pill wasn't doing anything - I have surely changed my mind!! I don't know what dose you are at now, but we are allowed to give 1mg up to 2x daily for the tics of the Guanfacine. I think it works better than the Clonidine did. This may not be of any help to you, just wanted to " put it out there " . You just never know what's gonna be that one little thing that makes all the difference in the world for somebody Good luck to you both! > > My son is having either complex tics or OCD, and I am not sure which one. Guest guest
My youngest daughter takes Clonidine at night to fall asleep. I have also heard of it working for tics but I don't know about it helping with OCD. For awhile, was taking two pills at night to fall asleep but it made her dizzy. Since it is a blood pressure medication and her blood pressure is low, we saw this result. I do know of other people who are able to take more than one pill without problems. Is your son on other meds for OCD? My kids and I all take Luvox for OCD and it has really helped. Kelley in NV **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Guest guest
Kelley, Thank you for your post. My sons doctor put him on clonidine for tics and it is suppose to help. It did help for awhile, and I took him off this summer. But, when school started and he went through this Christmas break, he got to bad.I know it had to be OCD. I still give him 1 and 1/2 tablets between dinner and bedtime. I am not sure that it is helping the OCD, even though he does seem better today. He is not taking anything for OCD, and I am gonna call a child psychiatrist tomorrow and possible get him in to see her this week. I take Zoloft for anxiety, OCD , panic attacks. I also have a mood swing disorder and I am bipolar. It took several AD's before I found one that works. I have been on Zoloft for 10 years, and I hope to stay on it as long as I need it. Finding one that works is hard., and I hate to see my son have to deal with side effects. That scares me!! I tried Luvox and I only took one and I had severe panic attacks all night and then nausea for 3 days from one pill. I flushed the rest, anyway I do like Zoloft . I do have side effects, but it is better than all that severe anxiety.
