Melinda Mommy of Marlycia 8 mnths, Natalya 22 mnths Scranton, PA disney in the heat- question Hello everyone!Matt and I are taking to Disneyland for the first time next week. I am worried about how he will do in the long lines in the heat in his brace. I actually think the brace may be even hotter than the cast... is that possible? It just doesn't breathe at all! The little guy has been sweating up a storm! This leads me to my question- is there anything they will do at Disney to lessen his wait time? I remember reading a post in the past on this, but I couldn't find it in the archives. If there is something we could do or someone to talk to that would be great. Let me know what you think. Guest guest
I am not sure about Disney so maybe others will chime in to help with that.I am not sure if it is hotter. I don't think I ever really noticed a big difference with .Unfortunately we never did a whole lot of running around during casting and full time brace wear. My first thought was take it off every now and then, but it may be too soon for that.Could he just go with the brace and brace shirt? No shirt over. Maybe that would get you moved up in lines.Hope you all have a great time!TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.html--- On Sun, 9/20/09, jill wienke wrote:Subject: disney in the heat- questionTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009, 11:17 PM Hello everyone! Guest guest
We took my son to Disney World and Universal a few times while he was either in his cast or brace. With the cast, we did go to Guest Services at Universal and they gave us some sort of pass to get us ahead in some lines. With the brace, we were allowed to take it off for a few hours each day, so we just took it off a couple times during the day when it got really hot to give him a little bit of a break. I have a feeling though that Disney will be very accomodating....sure can't hurt to ask. Guest guest
Hi Jill,Keira just had her brace break this summer and yes, it was hotter than the cast. The reason being is that we had the TSLO brace, it has the thick layer of foam and then plastic, there is no "breathability" and then the shirt liner just makes it so much hotter. I would be amazed at the heat build up when we took the brace off.Regarding Disneyland, go to Guest Services, right inside the entrance to Disneyland (have with you) and explain the brace/heat issue. It helps if you say he can't stand for long periods. They will give you a pass. Does still use a stroller? If so, they can give you a pass that the stroller is 'equal' to a wheelchair and then you would use the wheelchair access. This helped us, since it allows you to take the stroller in line.Have a great time!!Liz, Mom to Keira - 3.5 yrs in cast #5 at SLCTo: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Sunday, September 20, 2009 9:17:54 PMSubject: disney in the heat- question Hello everyone! Guest guest
I agree, even briefly explain how severe progressive infantile scoliosis can be- life threatening, different than adolescent scoli etc...as well as the heat, if it helps. My Dad just had a bad knee and couldn't walk comfortably for long periods of time, so my sister pushed him in a Disney wheelchair and they went to the short wait or front of every line. Guest guest
Thank you for the info. I will go to guest services. Like you said, Ii doesn't hurt to try! Glad to know they were accommodating. I am nervous that if we take it off he will start to ask to take if off more often. We have only had the brace a month or so. It is good to keep in mind as an option if he looks like he is getting overheated. Thank you! Guest guest
Jill, instead of taking it off and leaving it off if he gets over heated, just take extra tank tops or whatever kind of shirt you have him wear under it and take it off for a t-shirt change. That way he thinks it is still a "normal" routine and not "oh, you can go without it this once." But you can do it when you like eat lunch or a snack or something and say, well, lets take it off now, then you can eat, then we can change your shirt and put it back on. That why he has a little while out of it as well. Just a suggestion... Guest guest
Hi Liz, It sounds like our brace is just like the one Keira wore! Not breathable at all. Thank you for the advice. I will give it a try. Do you know if there was a specific name for the pass? It is difficult to get to sit in a stroller. He is 3.5 (like Keira) and is in constant motion. We may rent one as the visit goes on (we will be there4-5 days). It is funny, this was a "clebration" that we are in a brace, but it may have been better to go when he was in a cast! So many surprised have come along this journey. Thanks again for your help! It will be fun... I know Epcot has magaritas, right?! Did you go to the animal kingdom? Guest guest
Jill, Are you guys staying in the park? I am so excited because this will be the kid's first time going there. I've been thinking about going to guest services too, but my husband thinks we shouldn't do that because there are kids in wheelchairs and whatnot. I think though that with it being new that she's going to need time to adjust and it might be hard for her to stand for a long time...so, I am not sure if we will try to do the gues services thing or not. Guest guest
Hi Jill,SLC called it the TSLO brace, but the person that made it said others call it the 'Boston Brace", he said the name depends on who is making it!!We go to Disneyland in California, so I am not sure how DisneyWorld is. I can't imagine a plane ride across the U.S. with my 2 kids right now!! Disneyland is 1 hour away from us by plane.Regarding the Pass, it is called a "Guest Assistance Pass". They have different 'stamps' for different issues. We always get the one that says "stroller = wheelchair", but they also have another one that limits your time in line, not sure how they determine which you get. If you can just get him to sit in the stroller when you get to the counter and then show them the brace (or simply don't put a shirt over it.)I saw that another person posted that their husband didn't want to get a wheelchair pass, BUT, for us it was so helpful. it let us take the stroller into the lines, so your child can sit down. At California Adventure, the newer park, most of the rides are handicap accessible and the pass allows you to take the stroller in line with you. It helps for Keira to have a place to sit down when you are waiting for long periods of time. Have a great time. Keira was just talking about Disneyland this morning, we typically have taken her after each cast, but we didn't this time since we took her the week BEFORE she went back into the cast, so she could swim in the hotel pool. So, I guess I have to start planning a trip....Liz, Mom to Keira - 3.5 yrs in cast #5 at SLCTo: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 9:30:39 AMSubject: Re: disney in the heat- question Hi Liz, It sounds like our brace is just like the one Keira wore! This helped us, since it allows you to take the stroller in line.Have a great time!!Liz, Mom to Keira - 3.5 yrs in cast #5 at SLC From: jill wienke <jillwienkeyahoo (DOT) com>To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comSent: Sunday, September 20, 2009 9:17:54 PMSubject: [infantile_scoliosi s] disney in the heat- question Hello everyone!Matt and I are taking to Disneyland for the first time next week. Guest guest
Hi , Just my two cents, but I don't think there is anything at all wrong with going to guest services. I understand what your hubby is saying about kids in wheelchairs and stuff, but you won't be taking anything away from them - and these kids with scoli (whether in casts or braces) are going to have a harder time dealing with the heat than the average child. Guest guest
Our doc's secretary called our brace TLSO. It is nice to take it off for baths, but it sure will be nice when it isn't so hot out! We took it off tonight and my stomach hurts because I start to worry. Of course all I do is stare at his back and wonder if it is getting worse... the worries never stop for Mommies! Anyway, it is nice you only have a short plane ride. We are flying from Ohio to Florida and I think it is 3 hours nonstop. It should be fun! Thanks for the great information. Keep your fingers crossed! Start planning that trip to see Mickey! Guest guest
We have a wonderful zoo here in Columbus so that is why we didn't go last time, but I spoke with my brother and he said, "You are crazy- it was the best park of all and they sell beer!" We will make a point of going this visit. I am sure my daughter will want to buy every stuffed animal they have, and i am sure they have a few! I have a son who is almost exactly Noelle's age (his birthday is 10-12-01) so I can feel your sadness. She will adjust, but I wish she didn't have to. Let me know how it all goes as time goes by. Have a wonderful time in Disney! We will have to compare notes when we return. Guest guest
Jill, Your brother in law is a smart man - I'd listen to him from now on - LOL! We enjoyed the Animal Kindgom as well. I just wanted to tell you guys (particularly anyone with a large family) about a place called Orange Lake Resort and Country Club. It is not part of Disney property, but it actually borders Animal Kingdom - and if you rent a car it's less than a five minute drive. Orange Lake is a time-share property, but you can rent on a weekly basis. When we went a few years ago, we got a deal (through someone I know who is an owner) for around $700 - 800 for the week. (You can also rent through Time Shares Only or, I think, directly through OLCC). The prices may be a little higher now, but depending on the week you are looking to go - and how flexible you are - I'm sure there are units that go for $800 - 900, even now. Anyway, at the time of our trip was I think 8, and we had our two older kids with us as well (15 and 18) at the time. We had a HUGE two-bedroom unit. One bedroom had a king bed and it's own bathroom w/jacuzzi. The other had two queen beds and another bathroom. There was a living room with section sofa and flat screen TV (3 TVs in all), a kitchen area with table, washer/dryer AND screened porch off the living room! The resort itself was unbelievable. Huge gameroom, mini golf (I recall it was open late because and I played almost every night after returning from the parks), six or seven really nice pools with slides, etc. (they were adding a lazy river tube ride while we were there but it wasn't finished yet), restaurants, etc., etc. Can't wait to return! > > > From: clay morrison <meg465keira@ sbcglobal. net> > Subject: Re: [infantile_scoliosi s] disney in the heat- question > To: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. com > Date: Monday, September 21, 2009, 10:25 AM > > > Â > > > > Hi Jill, > Keira just had her brace break this summer and yes, it was hotter than the cast. Guest guest
My husband will be happy to hear about the beer, lol. I went so long ago that I had forgotten that. We'll probably need a beer or two at the end of this trip, hahahaha.
