Ok, so we made it through the first cast. What a long, tiring, emotional day. I have so many questions for you guys? First of all, Hayden is down to 33 degrees in his first cast, is this a good first time correction? Also, he is really having a hard time sitting straight up. He likes to just lay propped on many pillows, but he gets frustrated very easily.. His neck and chin area are a little red, but the doc said it should be ok, we put more padded tape in those areas. Other than that he is doing well. He is eating, drinking, peeing, and playing with his trucks. He just looks so uncomfortable. What can I do to help him???

Congratulations on making it through your first casting! 33 degrees is great!

You almost cut the curve in half! It seems so common to have the kids have a

hard time sitting up straight when the cast is first put on. I would just keep

propping him up at an angle that makes him comfortable. We used a beanbag chair

for Cole. It takes them a few days to a couple of weeks to get completely

comfortable sitting up. I think the cast rubs their legs a bit when they are

sitting, is not painful but just odd for them I think. I would make sure he has

his favorite treats and toys and some motrin. We snuggled alot the first couple

of days. It will be better tomorrow and the next day and the next.

Please call if you need anything at all or just want to chat. Congratulations!

Before you know it he will be back to his old self. Hang in there.

Thanks Tasha,

Hopefully he will be my same old boy soon. I worry about his neck but the assisting doc said it should be ok. I will let you know how he does tomorrow.

Thanks Jenn,

I figured it was common but want to make sure he will be able to be up and about soon. My husband mentioned buying a beanbag chair earlier tonight and I just showed him your post and he said, "great idea ". So it looks like we are getting a beanbag. I will post tomorrow to let you all know how he is doing. You guys are so great. Joanmom to Hayden 2 1/233 degrees1st cast down from 62 degrees Treated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX

Joan,

YAY!!! That is great correction in the first cast, I'm so happy to hear that. Casting day is long, tiring and emotional- especially the first one. It's the unknown.

Don't worry about him wanting to lay propped on pillows, it may take some time to adjust- maybe 2-4 weeks or less. If he's sore, you can give Motrin or Tylenol- that helped Bex.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 3rd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 25)

Joan, Glad you guys got to come home today and didn't have to spend the night. I think they snap back when they are in their familiar surroundings. Grace did a lot better once she came home than when we were in the hospital.

Idk about the 33 degrees, but sounds like others have chimed in. I like the idea of the bean bag, but I will most likely just prop Grace on the couch with pillows. Even with her brace she has a hard time getting up and down off the floor and if I help her up on the couch, if she wants to get down and walk around, she can just roll herself off :) Grace in her brace doesn't sit up straight for very long without getting tired, I would expect the same or even worse with a cast. A brace has some give, whereas the cast doesn't, so it has got to be tougher.

Keep us posted!

Joan, I am so happy for Hayden--33 is awesome!! I totally know what you mean

about him looking uncomfortable in the cast. Marcela didnt want to sit up at

first either and she really didnt want to move her neck much. Its like they

stiffen up in the cast because they're not used to it. The longer its on, the

more he'll start to relax in it though, you'll see, and pretty soon he'll feel

comfortable to start doing the things he was doing before in the cast(:

Sitting is definitely the hardest part (well, that and picking things up off the floor), but I promise you it does get better!!! Just give him a few days to find his groove. Every day it gets easier and easier.

What did his curve start at?

You made it through the worst day. It will get easier.

My son had his first cast put on 6 weeks ago. He looked SO unconfortable. But before two days it got better.

One thing the doctors told me is that the cast is so tight on the chest that they have to learn to breathe with their bellies. They do it by instinct but it's unconfortable until it becomes a habit. I have a friend who had to wear a brace as a teenager and she still remember how difficult was to change the way you normally breathe. And she was 15! She said it felt like you were running out of air.

For the red areas, I use any regular cream. If it's too red they should be able to trim the edge a bit or open it with pliers. You can also put some tape if it is the plaster what's rubbing.

I would be really happy with that correction. That's great! We went from 40 to 19.

Hope he gets better! Keep us posted.

Joan,

I am so glad you made it through the first day and that you got such great

correction.

I am sorry to hear that Hayden is so sad today still but wanted to let you know

that Chloe was the same way. She was sooo sad for 3-5 days and I thought my

heart was going to break. I am not telling you to scare you but rather to

encourage you because once we made it through that, she was back to her usual

very HAPPY self. Just hang in there and keep coming here for support. I

wouldn't have made it through such a tough time without this group. She

couldn't sit by herself and didn't want to crawl for a few days.

We used aquaphor on the red spots before we got the calendula cream and that

seemed to work. don't hesitate to call the doctor's nurse. they are used to

getting lots of calls from concerned parents (at leaast, that is what the nurse

in chicago told me)

She is in cast #3 now and giggles all day long.

hang in there!!

xo

6q Deletion Syndrome)

I have so many questions for you guys? First of all, Hayden is down to 33

degrees in his first cast, is this a good first time correction? Also, he is

really having a hard time sitting straight up. He likes to just lay propped on

many pillows, but he gets frustrated very easily. His neck and chin area are a

little red, but the doc said it should be ok, we put more padded tape in those

areas. Other than that he is doing well. He is eating, drinking, peeing, and

playing with his trucks. He just looks so uncomfortable. What can I do to help

him???

Joan,I'm so glad everything went well with the casting.  I was thinking about you a lot the last couple days.  Isabella was 64 out of cast at her 1st casting and in cast was 24 so I think your correction is really good.  I don't know if you saw but she ended up correcting 20 degrees in her first cast (but xrays probably weren't that accurate).  Keep the faith!  Each day will get better. Patty, mom of Isabella, 2 years old, in 2nd cast (Rochester) & mom to & EvanTo: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Monday, September 21, 2009 10:19:12 PMSubject: Re: Back from first cast

Thanks Tasha,

Hopefully he will be my same old boy soon. I worry about his neck but the assisting doc said it should be ok. I will let you know how he does tomorrow.
