Sorry folks, I got my p's & q's confused , below are the studies that I

mentioned (except for the info on the PCDI student , which I recall hearing out

of

Dr. Krantz's mouth at a PCDI conference).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------

Subject: Long -Term Outcome for children with Autism who received early

Intensive Behavioral Trearment

by J. McEachin, Tristram , and O. Ivar Lovaas

published in the American Journal on Mental Retardation 1993, vo. 97,

No.4,359-372

Copyright 1993 American Association on Mental Retardation

( In summary, the study was a follow-up to Dr. Lovaas' s 1986 study and it

reexamined the children at a mean age of 11.50. " Results showed that the

experimental group preserved its gains over the control group. The 9

experimental

subjects who had achieved the best outcomes at age 7 received particularly

extensive evaluations indicating that 8 (8/19) of them were indistinguishable

from

average children on tests of intelligence and adaptive behavior. Thus,

behavioral treatment may produce long-lasting and significant gains for many

young

children wit autism.

The paper is quite interesting reading and at the end it goes on to say that

other forms of therapy in addition to Lovaas's style ABA might be helful in

achieving a greater number of indistinguisable fom average children.

The other Study on older children was enitled " Intensive and Long Term

Behavioral Treatment for 4 to seven year old children with autism "

by Svein Eikseth

Glenne Center

Jahr and Sigmund Eldevik

Akershus Habiltation Team

Preliminary report presented at the P.E.A.C.H. Early Intervention Conference

Sept. 12-13,1997

Intensive long term behavioral treamnt has been shown to enhance the

intellectual , academic, social, and emotional functioning of many children with

autism.

This study known as the Eikseth Study was supposed to be posted at

www.autism99.org

site a few years ago. I don't know what happened since. If anyone finds the

report could they please post it.
