Rehab in patient with Discospondylitis??

Hey all,

I figured there would be no better people to ask,then the professionals of the

rehab world!

We have a 13yr MN Giant Shcnauzer with DX Discospondlytitis as of 9/18/09.

Patient has been on ABs Baytril and Doxy for the past 2 weeks, along with

Tramadol, and Rimadyl for pain, and Gabapentin. O has noticed no change and

patient is still very painful.

This paitent is extremtly weak in the hind end, with bilateral atrophy. DVM on

exam found CP deficits Bilaterally, patient was criss crossing and ataxic when

walking, he had decreased patella reflexes, (absent on the left hind), his

femoral reflexes were bilaterally intact. This patient can not stand for more

then 10 secsdue due to his weakness. It is also hard for him to turn around if

he gets himself stuck in a corner or something. He is too weak to back up.

I am wondering along with the DVM in charge of this case, if it is safe to do

UWTM or any other modalities to help this patient strengthen his hind end. In

the studies I have ready about this Dz,, it can take up to 6 mths of treatment

with ABs. I feel 6 mths is too long to have a patient cage rest, where he would

loose a majority of is muscle function, right??

If anyone has any information about this case, or has ideas of what we can do

with this patient during his course of treatment it would be greatly

appreciated.

I have a pug that came on August 21st. with Discospondlytitis. When we first saw

him he had been to and emergency vet and was put on Prednisone. We actually

diagnosed him with discospondlytitis in the vet clinic I work at. We took him

off of the prednisone and started him on Tramadol, Methocarbamol, Simplicef, and

epam to help with emptying his badder. He also had a lot of muscle atrophy.

On August 25th I started rehab with sling walking and PROM. Also used a massage

oil called " Panaway " and did massage on his back, shoulders, and legs. A few

weeks after this he started to try to stand on his own. Two weeks ago I built a

cart for him to help him to get around due to his owner being handicapped as

well. Today during his rehab he was able to walk on his own. He still needs

assistance on slick floors and some in walking outside but he is doing very

well. I don't know how much this helps you but if you have any questions feel
