Carla, many people of autism toe walk for various reasons, to me the only

time is when under great distress or anxiety . If my shoes are off and get

of trigger to fear or anxiety find myself up on my toes. Have long history

of this throughout mental health records, but in most walking I to be of

flat footed and walk with sloppy gait, but slight on toes. It is of

neurological and is often a signal of poor proprioceptual movements (where

we are in space things) as well as can be sensory. But it can be a style of

walking that has very bad consequences if not altered and supported to walk

with feet down. There are shoes with weights, there are braces that force

the foot down, you can be to do range of motion exercises that a PT can show

of you how to do to help relax the muscles and maybe teach her by taking

picture of her toe walking and then take of picture of her flat foot, then

show her feet down, so when you to notice feet up remind her feet down and

practice this script with her to learn so she can be to have of this as

intervention, and maybe even place it to IEP. If toe walking is not

intervened with it can cause complications to the legs and walking as she

matures into adult years and may need of surgery to repair.

I've heard several times at biomedical conferences that toe walking

can be a symptom of (milk-induced) constipation. Remove the milk

and the constipation and toe walking mysteriously disappear...

Carla,

My daughter toe-walks as well, she does have PVL (damage to the

white matter of the brain). She does really well about not toe-walking

most of the time but when she goes through a growth spurt it does get

worse. I noticed in your post that you stated her heel cords looked

tight. Has she just recently gone through a growth spurt, (I know that

when goes through a growth spurt her heel cords also tighten up)

her PT stretches her heel cords which helps tremendously. I do hope

this helps.

Hi all,

My daughter Kassie age 7, almost always walks on her toes. I realize

that this Autistic related but I am wondering if it is related to

Cerebral sy as well? It has never been mentioned to me, but I

know of signs of this. This is her only sign, but her heel cords

look really tight too. I wonder if they need to be stretched or

something? Does anyone elses child do the toe-walking and has anyone

ever had anything done about it? Is there anything that can be done?

I am worried about Kassie's legs, muscles etc. as she gets older! I

know lots of questions, but I wanted to ask you all for some info.

before really discussing it w/ a Dr! Thanks in advance!

Sondra, that is what I am soooo afraid of, that she will have

complications later on from it. It doesn't matter what is going on

w/ her...anxious,happy,sad she still toe walks. That is an

interesting idea about talking the pictures, I may try it. I don't

know if it will help though, she doesn't seem to care except when

her heels and feet hurt. Thanks for responding!

Not once has anyone ever mentioned Cerebral Palsy to me....it just

made me wonder cause of her constant toe-walking. Does your friends

son not toe-walk anymore? PT would be physical therapy right? Thanks

for your response!

Thanks Faye! Yes it does help. PVL, never heard of that. I am ne to

all of this even though Kassie is 7! Kaassie does have a few moments

when she does walk on her heels......I do see it sometimes. I do

wonder why no one has ever referred her to PT? I didn't know if

there was anythign that could be done for her, now I know that yes

there is! Thanks for the help!!

Carla,

If you nose around the files section of the Autism-Mercury list,

there is information from parents who addressed mercury in the

child's body and the muscles loosened and the CP symptoms went away.

There's one mother's story I remember who had a much older child,

but you'll have do dig through their " love letters " section to find

the information. I didn't bookmark it, but I remember it because I

thought it was so interesting.
