Guest guest
Hi , My guess is that has a "s" curve. Kiddos with a "s" curve have a primary curve and a compensentory curve. That's why you have 2 numbers. In my experience docs are really only concerned about the primary curve. Once that's corrected the compensentory curve will go away. Yes, you can have scoli and not have rotation. My daugher seems to be in that catagory right now too. Rotation can develop though, so just because they don't have it now doesn't mean that they won't in the future. I don't know how to get the travel paid, but I do know there are 2 parents on here that have their local shrine pay for all of their travel expenses to SLC. Maybe put that as a subject line of a new post and see if you get a response. ~Noah 4 years old9 months of casting in SLC; Currently on month 18 of bracingAnd Mariella 6 months old currently waiting and watching at 11* To: infantile_scoliosis From: lauradurham@...Date: Tue, 28 Jul 2009 04:38:13 +0000Subject: Requesting Advice I've posted once about and my anxiety seems to grow every week. She is 4-5 months old and we are in the "wait and see" phase. Her x-ray on 7/9 showed she had a thoracolumbar curve measuring 13/28. The local doc didn't give any help and I have an appt with the local Children's Hospital where they do casting, but not Mehta casting, on 8/29. I had originally decided to wait for that appointment, where I assumed they would do an x-ray again, and then would decide where to go from there. But now, I'm so confused... the local doc that I consider worthless didn't explain much, but I think he was saying there was no rotation, just curves, so it isn't scoliosis. Can that be right? I have posted a picture of her beautiful face and the x-ray to see if anyone can give insight (see ). To me, it looks like her hips are misaligned, but her ribs are okay. And when everyone gives a number, it is always the top number? Thirteen doesn't seem so bad, but 28 isn't great. My path right now is that I have started the application process with SLC. I have a call into the coordinator to see if I need to have a Shriner sponsor in order to get travel subsidized. I also am unsure if they only take extreme cases. We have insurance, but I don't want to hear 'wait and see' if it progresses and I definitely don't want a cast from a non-Mehta doctor.Sorry for the long post... here are my questions-1) Can anyone tell me from their experience with x-rays whether they see no rotation? Just looking for opinions, not a medical diagnosis.2) If no rotation, does that mean it's not scoliosis?3) If you were me, would you use the nearby Children's Hospital until you know it's progressive?4) Do you know how to get the travel/lodging paid? I have a lot of anxiety over how we will pay for that..Thanks for reading my super long post- everyone is so great with sharing their experience. The more informed and confident I feel in my decisions, the less stressed I will be!Take care, Windows Live™ Hotmail®: Search, add, and share the web’s latest sports videos. Check it out. Guest guest
Thanks for all the advice- I feel much more at ease now. I also talked to Angie today, who was a sweetheart and helped me make a plan. (She also gave me the number for El Jebel.) I plan on keeping my appt in Denver next month, but will send in the x-rays and application to SLC now. I will definitely let the Denver doc know that I will only do a Mehta cast, so hopefully that will help them see that patients are becoming knowledgeable and insistent on treatment of IS and maybe even seek the training. (I think S. also mentioned she was only interested in Mehta casting to the same doc.) And it was confirmed that they only cast infants younger than 1 if it is severe due to the potential issues with anesthesia. I'm watching her back like a hawk and know it is not severe, so I think we're in a little of a waiting game no matter who we see. I also now understand that I have two *s because she has an S shaped curve, not a C shaped, like most curves. The bottom is often compensatory, so it is more likely to correct once the top is addressed. Still praying we're in the 85-90% corrective type, but it's great to have the best of the best lined up and ready to go!
