Do you have any source that states Raloxifene lowers cholesterol???

Statins and Evista???

Does anyone know anything about an interaction between

statins and Evista (Raloxifene) which has cholesterol

lowering effects including its role in controlling

bone loss and possibly cancer prevention?

Yes, it's in the prescribing information.

Go to www.evista.com

click on prescribing information at the bottom of the

page. It's a .pdf document and when you have it

downloaded or open, go to page 8 and it speaks to the

trial results. The part I find interesting is on page

11 under precautions where it speaks to concurrent use

of Evista and lipd-lowering agents which certainly

includes the statin family.

My doctor had no concerns prescribing both despite the

fact that I have had nasty reactions to Lipitor and

Vytorin and stopped taking Vytorin on my own.

Thanks Barb...I guess I missed that when I was taking Evista a few years

ago. I had to stop taking it as it caused bad leg cramps at night. It

would probably really be bad to take with a statin if you were someone like

me and had a problem with it.

Does anyone have any input on Lovistatin (sp) or something like that. A

co-worker has a family member on it and since I have been warning everyone I

know about these meds, she was curious if that was another one to worry

about.

Thanks.

Lovastatin is Mevacor or altocor--it was the first statin developed by

a phramaceutical company

This is interesting -

Bile-acid sequestrants These lipid-regulating agents bind with cholesterol-containing bile acids in the intestines and prevent them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. They bind bile acids in the small intestine and carry them out of the body, causing the body to use more cholesterol to make more bile acids. This results in lower cholesterol levels. Bile-acid sequestrants also prevent absorption of some dietary cholesterol.

What are bile acid sequestrants? Bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol (Colestid), and colesevelam (Welchol) are medications for lowering LDL cholesterol. Bile acid sequestrants bind bile acids in the intestine and cause more of the bile acids to be excreted in the stool. This reduces the amount of bile acids returning to the liver and forces the liver to produce more bile acids to replace the bile acids lost in the stool. In order to produce more bile acids, the liver converts more cholesterol into bile acids, which lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Bile acid sequestrants have modest LDL cholesterol lowering effects. Low doses (for example 8 gram/day of Cholestyramine) can lower LDL cholesterol by 10%-15 %. But even high doses (24 gram/day of cholestyramine) can only lower LDL cholesterol by approximately 25%. Therefore, bile acid sequestrants used alone are not as effective as statins in lowering LDL cholesterol.

However, bile acid sequestrants are most useful in combining with a statin or niacin to aggressively lower LDL cholesterol levels. The statin-bile acid sequestrant combination can lower LDL cholesterol levels by approximately 50%, lower than a statin alone. A statin-niacin combination can substantially reduce LDL cholesterol and elevate HDL cholesterol.

What are the side effects of bile acid sequestrants? Bile acid sequestrants are not absorbed into the body and therefore they do not have systemic side effects (affecting other organs). Therefore, their most common side effects are gastrointestinal;

Lovastatin is the generic name for Mevacor, and yes, it's a Big Bad

Statin. That's the one I had to get off of--side effects: memory,

muscle pain, worsened cataract, hand tremor, possible relationship to

gum problems.

Anyone have increased Uric Acid blood test results as a side effect of statin

use? In this case it would be red yeast rice.
