Guest guest
We have 2 drummers now. Wonder if drumming causes PA or drives people to drum? ;-)If either of you can get a picture or even fake one of what it looks like when your hands "draw" that would be useful to have in our files. A picture is ...CE Grim MD , I have similar issues. I play drums on the weekends in a band. It is very demanding due to the type of music that we play. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago with Bilateral Hyperplasia and put on Spironolactone. Before that I was experiencing similar cramping in my hands and forearms. As the bp went down and the K went up I was having less cramping issues and, after 4 years, they are mostly gone. Currently I am having issues with dehydration when I play. My PCP recommended that, for every 3 hours that I play, that I consume a minimum of 64 oz of water (not sports drink). I started keeping track of water consumption and have stepped up the consumption and have noticed that the more water I consume during a show, the less aches and pains that I have the next day and the better that I feel. Guest guest
Make that 3. I quit the band I was in when I couldn't figure out why I was so tired - but it was at the height of misdiagnosis and had the most problem with my legs. Drummers use every part of their body and my legs were my bane. Now it makes sense due to low K, but when your brain is in a fog putting 2 and 2 together isn't so easy. Now Dr G, what is the evidence for or against just burning out our adrenals? Do we cause, not intentionally, some hyperplasia or overwork them? Is it plausible. I did the paramedic thing from age 18 and it wasn't until I took early retirement and went to the physician assistant program at the U of Utah that I first saw some signs of PA - but it seems like it coincided almost exactly when I left that rush of the street life. But life was always adrenaline fueled as I drummed on stage since 15 (and played guitar in some bands, but on stage is always a rush no matter) and I also played year round sports with that rush too. And then life slows down and up came Conn's. On drumming...... A research study a year or two old determined that during a show - an hour long show - the drummer expends as much energy as if they ran a full marathon. I can't imagine that helps an already low K. And I guess that would really depend on the type of music and how subtle one plays. My little brother plays drums too and he's a banger - breaks things and hits hard - I had a lot less money growing up then he did and I couldn't replace heads and cymbals (my little brother would just use mine without permission if he broke his stuff later in my teen life!) so today I still play very reserved and subtle - more jazz like -though rock is my thing. But I played guitar as long as I did drums and the guitar is a lot less demanding on the legs so I do alot more songwriting today. It is my escape in a crazy world. But that low K in my opinion creeped into every facet of life. Even music , I have similar issues. I play drums on the weekends in a band. It is very demanding due to the type of music that we play. Guest guest
It is low, even with taking 500-1000mg of magnesium per day. Blood level is low normal and urine is very high in magnesium. But, I cant stand the heartburn I get when I dont take the PPI. There is no way I could eat the foods on Dash without it. I tried stopping the PPI the other day and I was suffering terrible heartburn. I am not messing with that right now. One thing at a time. Too many changes and I have no idea what is impacting what. I dont think drinking 1/2 a bottle of pepto bismuth a day is good either. if I dont take the omeprazole, I wont be eating any fruit or tomato products at all. I can kiss all the LowSod V8 good bye. No grains either. Pretty much be eating just meat to stay alive at that point of deal with the heartburn. Not just night time heartburn either. It is there 24x7 and doesnt go away sitting up. I tried sleeping in a recliner, and will do that if I have reflux problems at night where I basically get puke in my lungs becuase of the hiatal hernia. Burns like hell. I have even picked up lung infections from it in the past. I have tired all the natural stuff, applecider vinegar and honey, you name it. I know it takes about 10 days to get past the hellish heartburn that develops when stoppping the PPI, becuae I have done it in the past, but I dont have 10 days right now to walk around in hell. I have a busy week ahead of me at work, new bosses, etc. Cant risk that transition right now. Maybe I will try it again if a few weeks time. ============================================================================45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 242lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.Meds: 50mg Inspra, 40meq Potassium, 1800mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 20mg OmeprazoleSide effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammation (From Spiro)Other Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bone Cyct in left Femoral Head and Pelvis. Guest guest
The Jigsaw supplement is the only product that works for me, it is a slow release tablet. Other products peak so quickly that I get the gut upset before the Mg has a chance to prevent the muscle spasms. , if you are having the same problem as I have, the muscle twitching is called 'fasciculation', click the link to learn more. I learned the word and definition from the doctor that administered an EMG. Again, follow the link,(BTW, EMG's HURT!) , mine was 'inconclusive.' For me, the fasciculation is a warning that the spasm is about to hit. That is what tells me to go to the Jigsaw bottle for another hit. It is my experience that doctors don't take these symptoms very seriously. One said, " oh, yes, I used to get Charley Horses all the time when I ran track in college. "  For me, they are horrendously painful, but for them, easy to dismiss. Guest guest
I had 3 EMGs. One neuro jammed the thing into my tongue through my throat. Mayo did the last one and diagnosed me with Cramp fasiculation Syndrome...casued by a problem with the potassium channel. Duh! At least they ruled out ALS as the cause. Thank God! The mayo neuro told me I have reall good nerves. In the upper 90%ile for my age. That was good i guess, but is also why i sense every stupid muscle twitch i ever have. I must have a high pain tolerance because i didnt find the EMGs all that painful. Then again, I didnt think mammograms were that bad either, and I have had 3 of those too. I also get teeth drilled and filled without novacaine much of the time. Actually, it was the full body muscle twitching that lead to my ultimate diagnosis of PA, but it was the low normal potassium that had my doctors chasing ALS and all kinda of other nasty crap. Talk about creating a anxiety disorder. Oh well, got me playing my guitar again and reawakened my Christian faith. At the end of it all, I am glad it happened for those 2 reasons. Who knows, maybe it was the only reason it happened to me, lol. Anyway, not to get all religious on anyone, but it was a very emotional/spiritual time for me. Starring death in the face is no easy task when you are so full of a desire to live. I try to live a much more purposeful life now; way more than i did 5-6 years ago. ============================================================================45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 242lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.Meds: 50mg Inspra, 40meq Potassium, 1800mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 20mg OmeprazoleSide effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammation (From Spiro)Other Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bone Cyct in left Femoral Head and Pelvis. Guest guest
Ya know, with all the differnt junk i take that can cause loose stools, it is hard to say that it is magnesium doing it. The 16-20 oz of V8 juice a day is enough to open the flood gates all by itself. You are right that there are alot of different types. Guest guest
I might have stumbled on to another possible cause...I've sleeping with 2 pillows to help with gerd. I am wondering if it could be a enflamed disc in my cervical spine? I went back to one and will see how that goes after a few days or so. I also had a hematoma on my spine found during an MRI. It might be putting pressure on a nerve because of the 2 pillow thingy. It is also on a the thumb that I severely dislocated about 35years ago. Perhaps the osteoarthritis is taking its toll. I am gonna guess that not all things will be explained away becuase of PA. This might be one case of that for me. ============================================================================45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 242lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.Meds: 50mg Inspra, 40meq Potassium, 1800mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 20mg OmeprazoleSide effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammation (From Spiro)Other Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bone Cyct in left Femoral Head and Pelvis. Guest guest
, A great recommendation for Mg supp is from Natural Vitality called Natural Calm it is an ionic mg supp that comes in powder form. This form won't upset your stomach and its highly absorbable. You can find this product at some healthfood stores but I get mine from the Vitamin Shoppe on line, Amazon carries it as well. If you give this product a try just follow the directions for advanced use. Hope this can end some of your frustration. Laurie. 48 y/o Dx'd w/PA last year. No HTN yet.
