On my 21st birthday, I played in a quiz bowl (academic quiz game) tournament at

Princeton, for the Penn State U. team. I said that I'd buy everyone drinks if

we won the tournament, but we didn't.

On my 21st birthday, I did homework. Everyone but my mom, sister, and boyfriend

(now husband) forgot about it but the only one in the same city as I was was my

sister/roommate. Everyone was SO sorry they forgot and they'd make it up to be

next year...too bad I turned 22 on September 11, 2001. Now I can't celebrate my

birthday without feeling bad, so I don't. :(

7670 does sound old. When I was in high school, the drinking

age in Pennsylvania (where I was) was 21, but the limit in

New York was 18. So many of my contemporaries went to NY on

their 18th birthdays so they could drink (legally). Seemed

weird to me, because I had no interest in drinking alcohol.

On my 21st birthday I was in federal prison. There's a sappy

song Joan Baez used to sing about a kid from Georgia who

" turned 21 in a gray-rock federal prison. " In my case, it

was a red-brick federal prison. I was happy, though, because

I'd just recently been transferred there from a state prison,

and three of my co-defendants/friends were in the federal

joint. They managed to provide a little party for me.

A federal prison. Thats kinda cool, in a way. More exciting than

throwing children and going to school!Kassiane

I don't remember much about my 21st birthday except that I thought it

kind of funny that I could now drink legally but that I had absolutely

no desire to do so.

When I turned 20, though, I got a card from my dad that was highly

appropriate. He wrote, " Congratulations, you survived your teenage

years, " and he meant it. <grin>

So, Jane, would you fill everyone in on the details of

this story? I know about it, but I feel like I'm keeping

a secret or something, when I actually feel like it was

a very praiseworthy thing to do. But it's Your story,

and I won't tell it.
