Guest guest
I recommended that, the owner can't afford it. Handicappets.com has a hock/tarsus brace; have you had experience using it? Guest guest
This is a brace I used for a dog with neuro problems causing him to knuckle and walk with a crouched gate. I have used it on wippets before that have had a achilles tear. The achilles case would have similar needs to your calcaneal rupture. We need to keep the tension off the achilles to allow for healing. To do this we have to keep the hock angle from closing. When I first saw the designs that were out there I saw that the plastic is all on the posterior of the limb. This does not provide the correct force system to keep the angle from closing. You need to use the ground reaction forces the animal provides by having the plastic go below the paw. Also the plastic should push postiorly distal to the hock and anteriorly proximal to the hock. If you have a orthotist you work with I would be happy to speak with him about this design. If not, I would be happy to help. Guest guest
Thank you for the information. What is the cost of this brace? Appropriate measurements, etc.? I will be meeting with the owner tomorrow and would like to get as much information to him as possible. Guest guest
I charge $425 for this particular brace and consulting. You can mark up accordingling or some charge for their fitting fees and rehab time. I do not work with the owner outside of working with a Dr. or Therapist. The owner does not understand certain aspects we need to be aware of for the best care for the animal. A cast of the limb would have to be taken as all of these braces are custom made. I can explain the casting technique, but that would be easier over the phone. I use the cast for all of the measurements. ***The cast postition is one of the most important aspects as I duplicate the angle the cast comes to me. A bad cast angle can lead to a bad brace. You want it to match the standing angles of the opposite side for this particular brace. I could send you some casting supplies to make it easier...a cast saw often scares the dog and you loose the angle of correction (no added charge, just send them back if you aren't going to use them) You are welcome to call me at my office if you have more questions Thanks Ben Ben Blecha, CPOwww.skyprosthetics.comwww.TriAmphant.com-- Those who can laugh without cause have either found the true meaning of happiness or have gone stark raving mad.~Norm Papernick Re: Partial Calcanean Rupture Stem cell? Guest guest
Kel Bergman at SCOPE in San Diego off of the 163 freeway or Wilcox at SCOPE in La Jolla off of Regents Road may be able to fabricate something like this. I believe they have the most experience in S.D with orthotics/prosthetics for animals. le Robbins, M.S., P.T.
